cw: self harm mention
this is why ao3 is superior š I hope op has a copy of their work because, from what Iāve been told, wattpad wonāt even warn or give you time to backup your work beforehand. they will just deadass delete your work. my friend once had their entire workāwith multiple chaptersādeleted by wattpad with no heads up. just a notification that says āyour work has been deletedā.
seriously people, ao3 is your safe haven. thereās no censorship. no capitalism bullshit. you can post the most taboo, most shockingly messed up thing there and the site will protect you and your works. they even have their own team of lawyers to protect writers, writersā works and writersā rights to create whatever they want. no matter how controversial or taboo or explicit or dark or messed up your works are, they are protected and welcomed on ao3. stop wasting time with wattpad š
Reblog if you will never. Ever. Use AI in your writing.
So theres this one person in my fandom who takes fics out of other fandom and changes the character names before posting it - like they give credits but they don't ask permission from the original author
I personally don't support this (tho i didn't hate comment or even let it known that i read it) but what are ur thoughts on it?
unless they at least change the wording (not just the names of the characters), this is still blatant stealing and plagiarism. it can and should be reported as such. I believe you have to be the author of the fic that was stolen in order to report it for copyright infringement though.
I can see that they āgive credits to the authorsā in the first ask you sent, but giving credits means absolutely nothing when they still steal other peopleās fics.
so it is still blatant plagiarism and stealing, with or without the credits.
credits mean nothing when consent is not explicitly given. the authors being offline for years is not an excuse. if you create something, that thing is permanently yours. an author does not have to stay online forever in order to retain ownership of their own works.
so Iām sorry but the fact you say āit isnāt plagiarism igā just because the person gives credit is wild to me. yes, it is. credits are only after you got a clear permission from the author and you credit them to both acknowledge and thank them for their consent. if you just copy and paste other peopleās works, āØchange the charactersā names and then credit the authorsāØ, without the authorsā knowledge or consent, you are still a thief.
saying itās not plagiarism just because credits are given is the equivalent of saying itās fine if someone steals someone elseās car ā because at least they leave a note that says āØthank you⨠to the carās owner before they drive away.
I think we should also talk more about how, quibbles about the permissions and ethics and legalities and all else aside, this is a weird thing to do.
This is weird, bad behavior.
This is a rude, bizzare, nonsensical thing to do.
This shows blatant disregard toward the original author, absolutely, but it also a huge violation against the entire nature of fanfiction. Copy-pasting names out for other names doesn't make any sense.
That's not how characterization works. That's not how voice works. That's not how setting works. It doesn't work. It's weird.
And I think we should be loud about how weird and off-putting and icky it is so people stop acting like fan works are interchangeable. Because they aren't.
hi, fanfic writer over here. if you all don't mind, I have a funny story to share.
I've had this exact thing happen to me while I was actively writing in the fandom that the story was copy-pasted from. and I was not reached out to in spite of the very easy messaging function built into the site. so I can say, with absolute certainty, if people out there really need to get the opinion of a fic writer who has had this happen to them: this fucking sucks, don't do this, you will absolutely cause more harm than you could ever imagine.
I can no longer remember exactly when this happened (it was something like 15 years ago, so do forgive me), but I remember the fic, what fandom it was "transported" to, what pairing it was, the response I got when I reached out to them to say "hi, not cool, actually". and even though I got an apology and the fic was removed, I still think about it. (and no, not just because I only heard about the fic because a third-party commented and asked if I was the copy-cat because they'd read the other story first and assumed the worst about me.) it just really fucking sucks, even if it's done in "good faith" or whatever. there is no excuse in stealing from someone, "even" if it's made by another "fan". you always ask for permission, you always wait, and if you don't hear back or can't find any statement from the fic writer about their works, maybe don't fucking do it? giving credit means absolutely nothing, and I cannot believe it's the year 2026 and we're still having this conversation.
that's all I had to say, thank you for coming to my TED talk.
I need y'all to know that I'm crying while I work on this Huskerdust fic.
It's not sad. It's just so fucking ridiculous, and I absolutely love the chaos that is happening.

I'm shocked I haven't seen anyone talk about how Husk and Valentino are really perfect foils for eachouther.
There similarity- There both winged pansexuals with substance abuse isues. They both run unsavory business and they both actively disturbe the thing there addicted to. This all proves that thoughs things aren't what makes Val like that.
There diffrents- Husk is very introspective. He is not immune to geting worked up but he cares more about outher people than his ego.
He wants to see outhers succeed even if he believes he can't. He also knows how to pull back he doesn't try to control outher people.
Val only cares about his own feelings and what will make him feel better right now. He is all ego, he needs to be the strongest, prettiest, most important person in the room.
He doesn't give a fuck about outher people's emotions untill it efects him. He trys to control everyone and he lashes out at everyone and everything when he's upset.
Oh also the way Husk thinks he doesn't desver love or to be saved but Val thinks he does desver love despite not giveing anyone a reason to.
I love that Husk is not THAT shorts objetivily speaking- he is taller than Vaggi and Lucifer at least, and he is just sightly shorter than Charlie and Alastor when he is upright (or the same heigh- it's very inconsistent lmao) who are tall by normal standards.
Is just that his beautiful princess with an disorder is stupidly tall, and he is always drawn next to him lmao
^ Exactly! And it doesn't help that Husk also slouches a lot.
Whenever I look online, Angel's height gets listed as roughly 8 ft.
So, if we run with that, then I'd estimate that Husk's height (based on where the top of his head would be, and not the tips of his ears) would probably be around 6 ft 8 inches.
(This, is the height comparison site for anyone that wants to use it).
Like I said, it's just an estimate, but that's usually how I keep track of their differences when I'm writing, because it helps me to make things make sense. š
I need y'all to know that Tether Me (my Huskerdust fic), was named after a song by the same title (by Galleaux).
I put it in a playlist that I sometimes listen to while I write about two of my favourite idiots, and now, whenever it starts playing, I have a moment of, "I'M TRYING," before I remember that that story ended already.š
autocorrect changed comfort characters to comfort chickens. #my comfort chickens
i DO believe that a good writer can make mischaracterization work. oh there's a character who doesn't normally cry? figure it out!! disect the character. make the situation cryable for them. make that character cry ugly tears even if it goes against their very nature. YOU CAN MAKE IT WORK!!!
A great piece of advice I've seen is "Don't fixate about what the character would never do. Think about the circumstances that would drive them to do this, even if they wouldn't normally."
Best advice ever!

Heartbreaking
You want to write a story where a specific thing happens, but then you see a post saying that someone should write a story where that specific thing happens.
So if you write the story people will think you were inspired by the post even though you came up with the idea first.
Alright, my thoughts on this:
Option 1: Share the post, and write (either as an addition to the post, or in the tags) that you were thinking about writing about xyz, and maybe this is a sign/get out of my head tumblr wtf/whatever other thing you feel like adding.
Option 2: Share the post after you write the thing, and then mention that you have a story where xyz also happens.
Either way - ALWAYS WRITE THE THING!!
Seeing a post about the thing, does not mean that you shouldn't write the thing! Because maybe the way you write the thing, or the characters you're writing about, that are involved in the thing, will draw in someone that really, really wants to read your version of the thing!
it is impossible to watch a movie. every night i think i want to watch a movie. no movie gets watched. because it's not possible
and yet they keep making movies with the hopes that one day humanity will discover a way to watch them. it's so inspiring
Sitting here snickering to myself, because I'm just remembering that one of my best friends (upon seeing how I write Lucifer and Angel with a Father-Son dynamic), told me that I write,
'like someone that has never known the love of a Father.'
Which, like, accurate? But also, I've been reading one of my fics aloud to them (it's easier for them to consume literature in audiobook form, and I don't mind), and I went really fucking deep with the Father-Son dynamic in this one, and they've been getting emotional about it. š
sometimes Iām reminded that there are still people who donāt know ao3 was literally created by incest shippers ā and the siteās sole purpose is to 1. be completely against censorship and 2. host all kinds of dark, taboo fics that are banned on other platforms ā and the first ever fic that was posted on ao3 was a fic about an incest ship from supernatural.
you are in the house that was created by freaks. for freaks (affectionate). every disgusting thing you can think of is rightfully allowed and welcomed on ao3, because they are exactly the reasons why ao3 was created in the first place.
ao3 was created because its creators got tired of censorship, they got tired of dark and taboo fics getting banned on pro-censorship platforms, and they wanted a place that was safe for ALL FICS THAT WERE DARK AND TABOO.
ao3ās main principle is being against censorship and being proship / profic.
there are some things in fiction that make me uncomfortable, but instead of shaming people who are just minding their own business and not harming anyone in real life, I choose to curate my own internet experience by blocking/muting what I donāt want to see. ao3 has excellent tagging system, so instead of being a bitch, use their tagging system properly and you wonāt see the things you donāt want to see.
itās your job to curate what you see. itās not other peopleās jobs or responsibilities to censor themselves for your personal comfort. the world does not revolve around you.
also you cannot censor āonly the things you personally hateā without expecting everything else, that isnāt of conservative beliefs, to be censored too. because censorship is a slippery slope and a fascist tool. I promise you there are people who think āwhy do tags for queer love even exist on ao3? theyāre grooming childrenā.
if you allow the things that you hate to be censored ā because someone with enough power gets to control what other people can and cannot create/consume, it will not stop at the things that you hate.

āwhy do some fanfic writers write non-con fics when itās for the sake of smut and romanticized?ā
some victims and survivors use dark fiction to cope and heal from their trauma, because in their fics, they are in control of what happens. they can turn the table and turn what happens into something thatās not traumatizing. and they can do that because they donāt owe you anything.
itās a kink to some people, even though they were never victims. people can enjoy it and find it hot because at the end of the day itās just a fantasy. itās not real. they donāt owe you anything.
itās cathartic and/or therapeutic to some to see their favorite fictional characters suffer. thatās why whump is such a popular trope; people love putting their fictional little guys through hell. non-con is a part of whump. and these people donāt owe you anything.
fanfic writers can write whatever they want, however they want. they donāt owe you anything.
I also suggest that you look up cnc kink and why so many couples are into it.

some people will be like āI wonder why fanfic writers donāt share their works anymorešā and then this is them when a writer is kind enough to share something they write ā as a hobby, for their own enjoyment ā with them for free.
some people really donāt realize how privileged they are that they get fanfics for free. imagine having access to something for free because someone is kind enough to share it with you⦠and then being rude, entitled and an ungrateful pos to that person who was kind enough to share their creation with you for free
āalmost 1 year is a lil too much for meā fuck off. fanfic writers donāt owe you anything. one of my favorite fics was updated after 13 years, and what I did is that I thanked the author for choosing to continue the work, I didnāt act like a spoiled toddler by asking why they didnāt update sooner. and even if a writer chooses to abandon their fic permanently with no explanation, that is their choice, their hobby, their decision. they donāt owe your entitled ass anything.
you people let tiktok rot your brains to the point you see everything as content farm and engagement. not a piece of art created by the artistās love and passion. itās dystopian.
