i’m confused as to whether op was describing the historical massachusett tribe, which as far as i can tell isn’t organized in a bureaucratic way, although i’m sure there are still massachusett ppl who integrated w/ us wamps or w surrounding pops of black ppl, or if op was using massachusett as an umbrella term to describe all of us, which can get a bit controversial (there’s us mashpee wamps, and our sister tribes assonet, herring pond and aquinnah, as well as central and western ma ndns like the nipmuc etc.). with regards to the history, though, in terms of naming i’ll have to do some digging and would love to chat w any other northeastern woodlands ndns on here! northeastern ndns hit me up!

i think it’s of particular importance to emphasize that we still remain and protect our homelands and traditional ways, despite the many problems related to climate impacting the cape and ma as a whole (rising deer population, rising sea level etc.). importantly, the wlrp (wôpanâak language reclamation project) relies on donations and federal grants to keep afloat, so if you want to support us, one way is to make sure that our language STAYS alive. we recovered from one hundred years of “language death” and now have kids running around speaking wôp in the home, with their elders, and with each other. kutaputunumu for your support!
