Rereading the odyssey because *gestures broadly* and book 4 is so funny to me because menelaus is straight confessing his undying love for odysseus while helen is sitting right next to him as if he did not spend ten years and a long ass trip to bring her home
Heβs all βyeah after the war he should have moved closer to me so we could be together all the time in holy matrimony until death do us partβ
"Athena and blazing Ares will deal with all the bloodshed"
Whenever Athena enjoys herself in war, she feels closer to Ares than no other deity can relate to
The more I think about that variant of Eros as an affair baby that Hephaestus brought up the more distorted I think that dynamic is. Like the affair of Ares and Aphrodite was in of itself a shitty thing but Aphrodite lying to Hephaestus about Eros' parentage that he only knew the baby wasn't his due to the working legs Eros had, to also lying and prohibiting Ares to be a dad to his own kid? Like, what happened there? Does the affair net scene happen before or after? I can't help but think this variant paints Aphrodite in a really bad light, for the prolonged lying and the cheating. (Maybe Ares and Hephaestus could bond over this slight? Or maybe it just makes it all the worse?)
I think I'd much rather have Eros be a baby Ares and Aphrodite had years after the divorce, while Harmonia would be the one concieved during it. This could explain why Hephaestus was so resentful towards her in her wedding (probably thought she was his and Aphrodite had to tell him she wasn't. Still doesn't justify the whole cursing, but we could let Hephaestus be a little evil), while also making Eros clearly as Ares' son. (Not that Hephaestus and Eros as father son doesn't have its own appeal, but I could not find more good evidence of that dynamic. There is a passage where Hephaestus creates numerous toys for Eros, which is so so cute. But again, that could happen years later and Hephaestus being a sweet guy. People are free to interpret it differently, of course.)
He's just a baby β‘

I really really love Oenone's lament for her trees in Tennyson's poem. Like, we have heard her mourning, we have seen her fear at the result of Paris handing the apple to Aphrodite, we have even had a short rant (angry and desperate and bargaining) about her beauty not being good enough for Paris.
But Oenone is also an Oread. Being abandoned by your only love is one thing, but to even have his actions result in her *trees*, her *forest* being cut down, has to have cut into her very being.
- Εnone, Alfred Tennyson (1842):
"O mother, hear me yet before I die.
They came, they cut away my tallest pines,
my dark tall pines, that plumed the craggy ledge
high over the blue gorge, and all between
the snowy peak and snow-white cataract
foster'd the callow eaglet β from beneath
whose thick mysterious boughs in the dark morn
the panther's roar came muffled, while I sat
low down in the valley. Never, never more
shall lone Εnone see the morning mist
sweep thro' them, never see them overlaid
with narrow moon-lit strips of silver cloud,
between the loud stream and the trembling stars."
ALSO i used to read the poem as taking place while the Trojan War was already in full swing, meaning that the trees being cut down must have been for palisades and war machines and such. But reading one article ("Tennyson and the Voices of Ovid's Heroines" by A. A. Markley) made me realize that PARIS HIMSELF cut down her trees just to build the ship with which he could sail toward Helen. Bury Paris alive istg π
Literally Ares as a child
"I've got some color back, she thinks so too. I laugh like me again, she laughs like you." And it's Menelaus and Hermione spending the last days together before Menelaus leaves for Troy.
AU,
Legolas the Lonely King. In which him and Gimli didnβt sail to the Havens, and Gimli past peacefully of age in their kingdom they built in the glittering caves. Legolas broken hearted grips to the idea of Gimli coming back reincarnated after hearing the Dwarrow legend of Durin having such a gift. Legolas insures the kingdoms safety as he waits for his long lost husband, but many believe him to be holding out too much hope and desire the throne of the kingdom. Knowing the patience of the suitors is running out Legolas presents a challenge, that turns out to be a trick. Legolas knows full well that not even Gimli could complete the challenge, however despite Gimliβs pride he is able to admit where his talents end and would be a fool to go up against Legolas in archery. So while the suitors struggle in vain, Legolas awaits the one who is humble enough to admit to the foolishness of such thingsβ¦

Lovers in the sky
Hera/Poseidon is still gotta be one of the worst modern crack pairings. Not only because a) it ruins the dynamic of Poseidon having one sister he isn't romantically interested in and thus can never reject him, being his sister in a fullest sense, and b) it gives into the notion that Poseidon and Zeus are interchanggable and that Poseidon is clearly the better option because he's "less toxic", for whatever reason, or for having a chill marriage, not taking into account how that marriage is chill because Amphitrite rarely if not ever steps into his extramarital affairs, something Hera does for her own reasons.
Like even if in good faith someone reads the Iliad and likes the Hera-Poseidon camaderie, partially why they work so well is because they are not so interconnected: they are sibling-allies who are equal to another, having the same goal of uplifting the Greeks and making the Trojans lose. Poseidon is a king, but not her king, so Hera does not need to make loopholes to protect her own self image / do anything foul around him like she has to with Zeus, in order to appear as a fair and just queen.
(Also, maybe it's just me, but there are a lot of qualities Zeus has that Hera could simply prefer over Poseidon. Maybe she knows Poseidon is too prideful to make himself a little bird for her to hold, maybe she's really irked when Poseidon won't fix Argos' dry waters out of the pettiness of losing, maybe she prefers Zeus' sense of justice and fairness and is endeared to it despite her trying to undermine him, maybe she likes that Zeus is the only one as crazy as to create a fake wedding to bring himself back into her good graces, and would accept her jealous nature when it comes, as most of the time she lets his bastards live unless it disrupts something in her kingdom. I dunno, just a thought.)

I need Nephele to be eerily similar to Hera that you can't even fault Ixion for believing it's her- Zeus creating Nephele, a cloud Hera clone, out of memory because he's an obsessed freak about Hera #likethat

It's very hard to beat Ozai in a "worst parent ever" competition, but comics! Ursa is trying her best.
Metis/Hera angst to me is a girl finding a kindred spirit in the middle of war, finding out this girl, your brother-savior's friend, was the genius who created the concoction that freed you. You gain a lot of respect for a goddess like that, so you draw near to her. Becoming battle mates, fellow soldiers in arms, and being slightly jealous that your best friend and your brother-savior have their own bubble that does not include you. You do not mind sharing her when it's him, and you do not mind sharing him with her as well. And then she's gone, just like that. And you find that it's your brother-savior's doing, in his selfishness to preserve his throne, and the grand scope of all your siblings' freedom under a tyrant they do not, and possibly will never know. You hate him, but you understand. You're grieving, and it frustrates you beyond everything that even as you fall for the stupid, infuriating, intoxicatingly complicated man that loves you, years later, she's still at the back of your mind, until one day his mind breaks and splits, and the daughter she saved from him looks right in front of you. Bearing her eyes. And you hug her, almost like a daughter, knowing she's the last thing your best friend left in this world.
