Lol so s4 has been confirmed as qotd. And we got like 0.5% of tvl in the tvl season… but im so sure we’ll revisit backstory stuff right? That’d be a super normal way to format a season. Fucks sake man
The dichotomy between people hating on this season because its a bad adaptation of a beloved book vs the people hating on it because its a bad continuation of the storyline they’d imagined in their head.

The insistence on having Lestat withhold his past this season is absolutely baffling, considering the entire book is a rebuttal to louis’s book/bait to draw other vamps away from him on the novel lol, but again if they DESPERATELY wanted that they introduce and then COMPLETELY drop a perfect device with which to do that - the music video in episode 3!!! Which is brought up, glimpsed, used to great effect in that one episode and never discussed or touched upon again. Use the video to present an idealised version of events then have lestat have flashbacks to the actual event like you did in that (the only good) episode. Jesus christ man!!!!
the new orleans times-picayune advertising department breathing such a sigh of relief that anne rice isnt alive to see this season so they wont be in charge of some kind of full paper advertising campaign litigating lestat characterization and telling rolin jones to die
Thinking about the needless hinting at totbt from ep1... Truly what even will be the point in adapting body thief, if they even get that far, when vampires can eat/drink/piss/fuck/walk in the sun (if theyre old enough), and lestat kills indiscriminately, seems indifferent to religion, and doesnt really seem to fear death in the same way he does in the book. (And I’m a hypocrit because I do think them being able to fuck is a good addition but like.) The core themes/things that that book explores are experiencing humanity again, existential dread/mortality and the nature of evil/good + belief in god. None of which… are really set up properly so far in the series. None of the bodily stuff will hit hard if they can already do that. We got a little hint at religion in ep5, a touch of good vs evil in ep2, and a tiny bit of existential crisis in e7 but. Hmm. Are they genuinely going to just do whacky body swap hijinx? Oh god they are arent they…

If you look at my posts on here and on Bluesky about Season 3 over the last several weeks, you can see I tried to go into this season with an open mind. I had a wonderful time at the TVL concert I was lucky enough to attend. I was loving the music. The trailers, the teaser clips. I was sold.
After the first episode screening, I thought, “That was a lot, but it’s meant to be jarring!” I actually liked it better watching it a second time, when it dropped for everyone else.
A few episodes in, I reasoned, “Okay. We will see some character development in here somewhere. Some unfolding of the past from Lestat's POV.” Outside of very short glimpses into Lestat’s past, we didn’t get that.
Midway through the season, I thought, “This will be the turning point. There will be a reckoning.” Instead, I found myself having watched 6 episodes of largely…nothing happening at all. No conversation felt real or lived-in. All the characters felt totally devoid of anything that made them compelling previously, including Lestat, who I found myself not really caring about in either direction. Lestat. In the show called The Vampire Lestat. It all felt so hollow. But there were glimpses of the show I loved, like it was on the precipice of achieving its former emotional and artistic impact for me.
So then I thought, “This is intentional. Lestat is telling the story like a play. It’s a bit long-winded, and I have issues with the pacing, but the finale will put the season at large into context. Plus, this season is meant to be one of two parts.”
When the credits began rolling on Ep 7, my first instinct was to cry, and I was reminded of the similar reaction I had to the rushed ending of Our Flag Means Death a few years back. After the initial shock, I was able to process with some friends, pinpoint the things I didn’t like, and consider HBO’s influence on those things. It took me a bit, but I made peace with it, even if I didn't love the season as a whole.
Something felt different about this. And I figured out why, I think. It starts out pretty personal, but I think it speaks to the season’s larger issues.
I am open to changing my opinion. I am open to discussion. I am open to watching the season again, maybe finding more to like in it. But for now, this is where I'm at.

The stupid thing is I keep having a weekly breakdown about the show but I am still likely going to give it the benefit of the doubt and watch s4 (albeit with vastly lowered expectations). And I likely will rewatch it when it comes on to iplayer in the UK so they get the viewing figures lol. (Maybe I will like it more all in one go. Who knows.) Because I want to enjoy it, I want them to make more to see if this was just a wobble in quality and not a death knell.

I do think there are many valid critiques of the ep, but people going ‘paul would not say that’ like yeah… he’s a hallucination???? Similar to the seance ‘no way claudia liked lestat more’ girl there’s this thing called ‘lying’ idk if you’ve heard of it. She’s trying to wound louis, she already killed lestat (and lets be honest - they didnt know what to have her say to lestat because he isnt there in that scene in the book 🙃)
Also not getting the complaints about the conductor from the train scene being in the death-hallucinations room being confusing because ‘claudia said it didnt happen’. Like she… didnt say that as far as I can recall? She said she exaggerated/changed what he said to her? Putting aside the (sizeable) issues with that for a moment, it doesnt mean he didnt still come after her and threaten her, he just didnt specifically threaten her in the way we saw in s1… its actually not entirely absolution of his actions.

Lol of course Hannah Moscovitch wrote the finale. Literally showed her hand as not understanding these characters, and lestat in particular, as early as s1.
