parents, please be consistent and communicate clearly, in advance, when it comes to household chores.
kids should be helping with chores in a shared household (and learning how to be self-sufficient in the future). but! kids also deserve to have their free time respected by not having chores sprung on them unexpectedly. and assigning them chores at random just encourages them to isolate themselves from the family. talk with them in advance about what’s expected–setting & respecting clear boundaries will make you both happier.
also!
if your kid isn’t finishing their chores, talk w/ them and figure out what specific issue they’re having. it’s incredibly alienating to be called “lazy” or “irresponsible” when actually you are just overwhelmed and struggling.
if they find a particular chore difficult, walk them through it step-by-step and figure out what aspect makes it so hard. consider finding a different way to do it, or letting them trade for a different chore.
it’s easy for kids to get overwhelmed by responsibilities, especially if they’re struggling with school work. balancing school & household responsibilities is a learned skill, something that has to be taught.
work together to make a chore schedule and give consistent reminders without nagging. aim for accountability while allowing grace periods.
most of all: when chores pile up, sit down and talk about why that’s happening. don’t reprimand your kid without first checking in and getting their side of the story.

June 28, 1969. 🏳️🌈
The Stonewall riots (also referred to as the Stonewall uprising or the Stonewall rebellion) were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations by members of the LGBT community in response to a police raid that began in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan, NYC. Patrons of the Stonewall, other Village lesbian and gay bars, and neighborhood street people fought back when the police became violent. The riots are widely considered to constitute one of the most important events leading to the LGBT liberation movement and the modern fight for LGBT rights.
Just had my nth conversation with someone about mask-wearing today - yet another well-intentioned moron who was like
‘But the virus is gone now’ (it isn’t)
‘But the mask is uncomfortable’ (ventilators are worse)
‘But you’re young, you won’t die’ (having this thing could impact my health for decades to come + it’s my responsability to protect those who’re more vulnerable than I am because that’s how society works)
‘But are you going to live in fear for the rest of your life’ (taking concrete safety measures actually helps me feel more in control and less worried)
‘But are you going to give up everything and stay inside like a rat’ (no, but I’m definitely going to decide what’s worth risking my health for, and shopping for bread rolls is not very high on my list of literally-to-die-for activities)
‘But what if they never find a vaccine’ (then we’ll get used to the situation just like we got used to a thousand other things like seat belts, bike helmets, and increasingly weird true crime podcasts).
I know it’s tiring to have people call you paranoid all the time - but you’re right and they’re wrong. Check the news, keep a safe distance from others whenever possible and keep wearing your mask!
(Btw that thread is full of interesting stuff.)
