Hi everyone go read Taiwan Travelogue by YĆ”ng ShuÄng-zĒ. Itās sooooo good. Itās a novel framed as a translation of an old travelogue. Itās gay. It has footnotes. Itās a love letter disguised as a travel journal. Did I mention there are lesbians?
you never know what someone is going through. for instance i didnt know i was going through anything until about 2 years later. i thought i was just chilling
Iām suddenly laughing at the idea of a cliche noir detective story written in the brutally concise style of Hemingway.
A woman walked into my office. She had legs. I noticed her legs. āI have a problem. I need your help,ā she said. They always said that. I knew her legs werenāt the problem. I hoped she might want my help with them anyhow.
āCan you pay?ā I asked. Of course she could. Her shoes were worth more than my rent. She could pay.
āI can pay,ā she said. Her eyes were wet. I wondered if anything else was wet. Probably not. I am not handsome. Not since the war.
She was looking at my scar. Lots of people do. Most look away. Not her. She did not look away. She looked at my scar and I looked at her legs. There were two of them. I liked that about her. I liked that a whole lot.
āWill there be danger?ā I asked. There always is. This city bleeds danger, then drinks it right back up again.
āIām afraid there might be danger,ā she said. She had the voice of a beautiful woman. She also had the face and body of a beautiful woman. She was beautiful.
The light from the window was striped. It made stripes on my cigarette smoke. The end of my cigarette crumbled into ash. My marriage had also crumbled into ash.
āI can handle danger,ā I said. I patted the butt of my gun. My gun was a Colt. My gun and my scar were all that was left from my time as a soldier. My gun, my scar, and the nightmares. I looked her up and down. āI am good at handling things.ā
āItās about my husband. Heās gone missing.ā
She was not wearing a ring. It means something when a woman does not wear a wedding ring. Usually, it means that she is not married. āSeems your ring has also gone missing,ā I said. I hoped her dress would join it.
Her red mouth curved upwards. She was smiling a little. āI donāt wear it outside. A diamond that large would only invite trouble.ā
āIn my experience, trouble doesnāt wait for an invitation.ā I looked at her legs again. They were both still there. āWhen did you last see your husband?ā

The Sting (1973). Sooo much fun. Paul Newman and Robert Redford shouldāve made so much more movies together.
Olivia (1951). Incredibly messed up and so so gay. I loved it so much.
The Lady Eve (1941). Henry Fonda falls so much here. Incredible. My first Barbara Stanwyck film and I totally get it now, sheās amazing.
A Woman Rebels (1936). Obligatory Kate film in the monthly ranking. Definitely not among her best, but I really enjoyed this + examining the difference in 1890s, 1930s, and modern progressiveness.
when i told my mom katharine hepburn made a total of 52 films and i'm watching all of them, her immediate reaction was: that's enough to make a deck of playing cards! you should get one printed!

are shows and movies allowed to be subtle and ambiguous anymore..... is that still allowed or does everything have to be a patronizing hand holding session. just wondering
Red onion chutney (we had red onions lying around for ages)
Pickled beets (beets from the fridge had to be put to use)
Zucchini soup (SO much zucchini. ātis the season)
Flatbread (too much greek yoghurt that had to be used somehow)
Still considering a greek yoghurt cheesecake. But Iām also very tired and I still have to cook dinner later today lol. Maybe Iāll save that idea for next week
Okay - I have 2 for the 50 word prompts if you wish or have the time.
2 & 8 for Henry and Eleanor
41 for Charlie Allnut and Rose Sayer.
Henry and Eleanor / lonely + caress
The halls of Chignon stretch out into an endless darkness before Eleanor, the candle in her hand doing only so much to light her way. Its flickering flame casts shadows on the tapestries, turning the ordinary into the grotesque, the grotesque into nothing at all: she is a shadow puppet on the wall.
She passes Richard's room like a spectre; Geoffrey's next, then John's ā and is met only with a calm silence. Her children have ceased their ceaseless bickering at last, and the castle is asleep. No one to fight with, no one to dismiss. She should be welcoming the quiet, and yetā
The darkness, the solitude, it feels too much like imprisonment.
-
The walls of Chignon seem to stretch endlessly around Henry. Cold, harsh, restrictive. The hour is late; Alais is asleep, his children either dreaming or plotting beyond his reach, and he is alone. It is too early yet to start a hunt, too late for revelry, and the halls are long and quiet in the dark of night.
The walls are thick, the halls cold, and yet Henry doesn't shiver. He has always moved too quickly for the cold to catch up. His hurried footsteps echo in this cobbled confinement, his path lit only by the candle in his hand.
He is out on the battlement before long, overlooking his lands from above. The winter night is cooler here and he pauses, finally, to let the chill catch up with him.
Eleanor finds him, out there on the battlements. She moves across the walls like a specter in her white nightgown, hair flying loose in the cold night air, flickering candle casting wild shadows on the wall. She is far off, still ā too far to see her face or any discernible feature ā but this is Eleanor. Unmistakably Eleanor.
He would recognize her anywhere, that is his curse. The price he pays, perhaps, for her imprisonment.
She settles next to him without a word, overlooking the dark lands unfolding before their eyes, and silence stretches out between them. Loneliness too, across the space of years of marriage and war (one and the same to both of them, really; Henry doubts if he'd know how to love another way). It's almost peaceful.
"It is a beautiful night," she says eventually, breaking the silence at last. He looks at her, tries to discern her shape in the night ā the angle of her cheekbones, the cutting edge of her eyes ā and finds a portrait of shadows and candlelight on her face.
"Has the joyful moment come? Has the great Eleanor of Aquitaine lost her mind at last?ā he announces, his voice cutting through the still darkness like a church bell. āIt is so cloudy we can hardly see the moon."
"Precisely," she says, unperturbed by his mockery, one hand reaching out to caress his cheek. "Dark enough to hide the flash of a blade."
Her fingertips linger on his skin just a minute. Cool, colder even than the winter air surrounding them, and yet her touch reminds him only of the flames of war and passion. Even her gentleness carries an innate violence. A sweet caress and the threat of blades. Eleanor, too, knows only how to love by carving wounds.
"You wouldn't dare," he says eventually, when the moment has stretched on to become unbearable.
"There you are mistaken," she says, lifting her hand slowly from his cheek. Her pace would seem calculated to anyone but Henry, who notices the hesitance in her movement, the slight shake in her hand when she pulls back. Still, she stands straight, a pillar on the castle wall ā always steady, always proud. "I would be a fool to kill you myself, when others ā less important people, with far less to lose ā want you dead already. Why do the work myself when I know someone else will do it for me, given time? There is a difference between prudence and cowardice that you have yet to learn."
"And yet I still live."
"So you do."
Why? He wants to ask.
"Proof of either your cowardice or your incompetence," he says instead.
"Perhaps I simply do not wish to see you dead ā yet."
A swish of her dress, and Eleanor is off again, a shining, candlelit beacon on the battlements. Henry is alone once more.
Eleanor's caress lingers on his cheek along with the memories.
