Fandom Problem #15,275:
When a piece of media about how humanity is inherently good has a fanbase so rancid and toxic that it make you wonder if people consumed the same piece of media or just missed the entire point on purpose.
Substack as a platform is so immensely frustrating. It's encouraged a revival of independent, long(ish)form blogging, which is great, that's a genuine public service, but why couldn't this have happened on a site that's actually functional and readable? Why couldn't it have been on a site that allows you to load the text and scroll through it like a normal person instead of waiting on every scroll action for the browser to mine enough bitcoin to render the next two paragraphs? Why couldn't it have been on a site that does footnotes with the HTML anchor links that have been a solved problem for 30 years instead of a nonsensical js-based interface that doesn't work at all on my phone? Why couldn't it have had comments that you can just read instead of constantly clicking into subthreads and then losing your place when you go back and the page reloads?
I think part of the problem is the "newsletter" branding, a conceit that interferes with the site's actual function. Substack is a blogging platform that refuses to call itself one, which is probably related to its failure to implement very basic blogging features like tagging and searching. Building a functional blogging platform is actually not a massively difficult technical challenge, and it's not something that ever needed a bottom-up reinvention. Why can't you just realize what your site is for and then do it well?
Also substack platforms nazis, which seems like a bigger reason not to give them them money?
Here's an article from The Guardian (February 2026):
Exclusive: Site takes a cut of subscriptions to content that promotes far-right ideology, white supremacy and antisemitism
There are other articles published in The Atlantic, etc.
A key part of the article above:
Launched in 2017, [Substack] has previously faced criticism for hosting newsletters that promote extremist views. Its co-founder, Hamish McKenzie addressed its decision to host Nazi content in one of his own posts on the site in 2023.
“I just want to make it clear that we don’t like Nazis either – we wish no one held those views,” he wrote. “But some people do hold those and other extreme views. Given that, we don’t think that censorship (including through demonetising publications) makes the problem go away – in fact, it makes it worse.
“We believe that supporting individual rights and civil liberties while subjecting ideas to open discourse is the best way to strip bad ideas of their power. We are committed to upholding and protecting freedom of expression, even when it hurts.”
a lot of you really need to internalize that acting avoidant isn't cute at all and that it will cost you experiences and life outcomes if you don't change course

The 'cartoon wardrobe' thing where a character in an animated thing only ever wears one outfit doesn't bother me. That's just their design. 'But what about laundry' just isn't a particularly interesting detail to care about.
But if you have a character with one of those Always Outfits, and then there's a timeskip and they show up again a bit older than before, you have to give them something new to wear. I'm willing to ignore laundry, but I've never met a 15-year-old who wants to wear the same thing she wore when she was 12. Laundry isn't an interesting detail. How the character has changed over the timeskip, and how that can be represented in their design, absolutely is.
Hell, it can't even be the same outfit, becuase there's simply no chance it would still fit. The only way to explain the continued use of the costume is if this character intentionally chose to buy a larger version of exactly the same thing they were already wearing every day three years ago to wear every day now. That's an incredibly specific character beat. And it's not one that makes sense for most of the characters who do this. You're already making new art! Just toss two hours of wage at a designer to give them a character-appropriate new fit as well! You can keep the theme colour!
The one exception is a suit. If you have to wear a suit for work I completely believe that you're going to be wearing the same one 5 years later. Even if you have to pull a Phoenix Wright and toss a waistcoat on too because the jacket doesn't close in the front anymore. Those bad boys are expensive.
Hey everyone. There's a new youtube feature that rolled out just yesterday that's raising some privacy concerns.
People in the U.S., U.K., Brazil, and Singapore can now share videos and chat with friends directly within the YouTube app. The update bring
This post talks about a new DM feature in youtube. What it fails to mention is that as part of this new feature is that when you send someone a link to a video, and they open it in the youtube app, they will see who sent them the link. Specifically, your channel name.
If your google account name is your real name, so is your channel name by default.
This means the new default behavior is that everyone you send a youtube link to will see your full name if they open it in the mobile app.
To turn this off:
Go to your youtube app settings
Go to Privacy
Turn off "Channel visibility for shared links"
Trimming the source id (the stuff after the '?' in links) will also prevent this from happening.
Important reminder to circumcise your links!!!
both Spotify and YouTube have either ?si=kfhdheuuehdjd or &si=kfhdheuuehdjd in their links when you push the share button.
REMOVE ALL OF THIS!!!
with YouTube, sometimes the link will be youtube.com/watch?v=jhhehhdehhe which is fine, but if it's followed by the &si=...., remove that part!!!
This lets the apps track who you send links to AND shows your username (USUALLY YOUR REAL NAME) in the DMs feature of the platform
When opening YouTube links, please circumcise them before opening them or the person who sent it might be able to see your name too!!
Also, as OP said, go to your settings and turn that off!
practicing radical acceptance about the fact that I'm always gonna be weird and awkward and a little difficult to be around. it's okayyyy to be weird as hell

“You write the beginning and then you go back and rewrite the beginning, and you never got off page one. It’s kind of a syndrome, and I have a rash piece of advice which is — Go on, page two, page three, and never look back. Get something finished, no matter how lousy it is. […] Perfectionists cannot get going unless they kind of do violence to their own instincts, and just blast ahead.”

I think the battle is long since lost on what the “-coded” suffix means, but I (old movie guy specifically invested in queer coding) seem to be unable to let go of how annoying I find the fuzzy popular use of the term. This is probably a flaw in my character.
Coding is intentional, it’s a way of communicating indirectly with the audience through a shared language of signs. That’s why it’s called coding, because it’s communicating in code. It isn’t when a thing reminds you of another thing.
"Some preferences have to be sacrificed for society" is such a broad statement that it can cover everything from
"Maybe not every household needs its own industrial-grade leaf blower."
"Maybe we should accept denser housing and shared infrastructure."
"Maybe private lawns should become community gardens."
all the way to
"You don't get control over your schedule."
"You don't get privacy."
"You don't get to choose your own aesthetics."
"You don't get to decide who has access to your emotional life."
"You don't get to opt out of communal activities."
"You don't get to have tastes that aren't socially approved."
Those are not remotely the same category of thing.
Some people treat all preferences as interchangeable units. They imagine a giant pile labeled "individual desires" and then talk about reducing it by 15%.
But preferences aren't equal.
Wanting three power drills when one shared drill would do is different from wanting control over your schedule.
Wanting a third car is different from wanting a bedroom door that locks.
Wanting a private yacht is different from wanting the ability to listen to music nobody else likes.
Wanting a 10,000-square-foot mansion is different from wanting to spend an evening alone.
The fact that these get lumped together is what makes the discussion so frustrating.
Because someone says, "Well, people will have to make sacrifices."
And I ask, "Okay, what sacrifices?"
And they think I'm being difficult.
No, that's the entire question.
A society that says, "You can't own six lawnmowers because we have a tool library" is making a very different demand from a society that says, "You can't go to bed when you're tired because the wellness committee has determined that lights-out is at 10 PM and not a minute earlier or later." The first one is actually a functional society. The second one is a "therapeutic" boarding school for adults.
Food. Clothing. Manual labor. Medical choices. Sexuality.
There is a vast difference between "You can't get out-of-season produce on demand, because the resources needed to make that available are unsustainable" and "You can only eat food obtained locally or grown yourself or cooked yourself."
There is a vast difference between "We don't need multiple iterations of the exact same product under different brand names" and "We don't need gluten-free or high-protein or low-fat or vegan or kosher or other specialized food because those things don't' matter."
There is a vast difference between "Fast fashion with oil plastic fabrics made in sweatshops with quasi-slavery conditions needs to be abolished" and "People should only wear handmade bespoke clothing."
There is a vast difference between "Everyone should have the free time and space and resources to pursue hobbies like gardening, canning, cooking, sewing, knitting, and other crafts" and "People should have to rely on small-scale crafting to survive."
And sexuality and medical choices... well, I talk about those all day, so.
