Another Game of Thrones fic! This is one is not a reader-insert, but we're branching out because I've got such a massive weakness for Brienne of Tarth and Jaime Lannister. In particular, Shoot the Moon is an AU fic written by the stunning @hardlyfatal.
Now, all of hardlyfatal's AUs are legendary, but this one has a special place in my heart since it's the first one I ever read.
Shoot the Moon features author Brienne Tarth who gets talked into going to a Western-themed vacation/retreat with a few friends. Stockbroker Jaime Lannister is a single father whose brother convinces him to help run the Western-themed vacation/retreat while the business is short a worker. Their initial meeting is tempestuous, but it isn't long before both of them start to soften toward the other.
Honestly, Shoot the Moon is one of those stories I read over and over again! It's witty and well-written, with believable character development that feels so natural. And that's not to mention the incredible smut! The story also contains background bits of Sansa/Sandor and mentions of Arya/Gendry, but the focus is firmly on Brienne and Jaime. As I said, it's a modern AU, but there are plenty of nods to the source material, along with some other delightful tidbits. (I always get a particular kick out of the in-universe version of Yelp, Yarp.)
This fic is one you can really take your time to explore - 80,000 words split over 33 chapters. But make sure to start reading soon! hardlyfatal has started taking some of their fics down to rewrite into original works, so make sure to catch Shoot the Moon before it's gone! Buck stared down at it. It looked to be a⌠bear? With dark brown fur and blue eyesâ bears donât have blue eyes, though, do they?â and a little blue jacket, double-breasted, with two rows of buttons and a fake-leather strap across the chest. Something about it tugged at his memory. It looked almost like what he had worn yesterdayâ Jesus, was it only yesterday? â to the battle in Wakanda. But it was different, somehow⌠a less-modern style?
âHe has a Bucky Bear?â asked Darcy, peeking around Buckâs shoulder to see why he was blocking the doorway. âNo wonder he likes you so much.â She grinned up at him and slipped around him to enter. âYou guys almost done?â
A recollection of himself in a blue double-breasted jacket, pouch strap slung across his chest, knee-deep in Austrian snow, surfaced with a speed that had him retreating until the solidity of the door jamb was at his back. Darcyâs and Lilaâs eyes flew to him.
âYou okay?â Darcy asked, a little frown of concern between her dark brows.
âThey made me into a bear?â he demanded as Nate took it from him. âA bear?â

âThe way I see it, we have a ready-made to-do list,â Bruce replied. âOne, we coordinate with Wakanda and the Mystical Arts people, because their technology and magic will be instrumental in accomplishing anything. There was a beat of surprised silence in Thorâs wake, and a lot of dismayed faces.

The shower was one of the best-feeling things Bucky had ever experienced, and he included sex, a good meal, and the day heâd broken free of HYDRAâs control in that. His already-close-fitting gear had been glued to his skin by dried sweat and blood; good for defense, terrible for air flow.Â

The thoughtâ it was his planeâ sent a bolt of pure happiness up his spine, just as quickly banished by guilt. It had been so long, decades, since heâd had anything that was completely his, and the idea thrilled him to a stupid extent.Â
But how could he enjoy it, how could he feel enjoyment at all, after what had happened? What heâd lost? What everyone had lost? The entire world was in shambles, and there was him, grinning foolishly because he owned something. He tucked his hair behind his ears and left the bathroom, berating himself in his thoughts.

Darcy was exhausted, from pain and stress, but it would have taken MjÜlnir to the forehead to knock her out, so wound up was she from⌠everything.

He froze in the act of helping Erik sit up. âThat is part of what has occurred in recent days.â
Once Erik was as comfortable as he could be, Thor dropped heavily in the bunk beside him. Darcy stumbled to the other bunk, with help from the nearly-silent Winter Soldier (what?!) and, for once, sat quietly as Thor began his sad tale.
âThat is so fucked up,â Darcy whispered when it was over. They were midway over Europe by then, nothing but mountains and fields to be seen, dotted with towns and villages. Sheâd cried at various points in hearing everything recounted, but especially to hear of Thor losing his eye and MjĂślnir.
âOh, honey,â she murmured, leaning forward to enfold him in her arms. âWhat youâve been through.â
Thor held himself rigidly and then went lax in her embrace, shuddering. âI will need your help to endure these blows I have suffered,â he mumbled, clearly stripped bare of his last resources. âThis is all my fault. All of it. All of it.â

âAreâ are you a friend of Sheriff Cleganeâs?â Sansa asked, her voice as neutral as she could make it.
Gilly flushed and averted her eyes. âIn a manner of speaking,â she said, and Sansa knew what that meant.
She did not like what it meant.
âBut⌠but just a friend,â Gilly hurried to add. âFor the past year, at least. Almost two years, now.â
What? Sansa thought. âWhat?â Sansa said.
âLately, whenever the sheriff⌠visited⌠me, weâd just end up talking,â said Gilly. âBut even before thenâŚâ
She paused, biting her lip as she looked away, seeming on the horns of a dilemma about whether to say a certain something.
âBefore thenâŚ?â Sansa prompted, a trifle impatiently.
âBefore then, he wasnât usually there toâŚâ Gilly trailed off, her gaze darting around the courtroom. It was clear she was uncomfortable discussing the matter at all, but especially in that particular location.
âTo what?â Sansa prodded her. I want details.
âMost of the time, he only wanted to hold me,â whispered Gilly, leaning in close. âHe liked when I sat in his lap, and heâd put his arms around me. And weâd just sit there for an hour.â
âJust most of the time?â Where were these questions coming from? Sansa wondered of herself. But there was a flame of curiosity burning in her belly, a need to know, even as the prospect of Sheriff Clegane with another woman upset her.
âWellâŚâ Gilly flushed again. She looked around the courtroom once more before meeting Sansaâs eyes. âWhen we⌠did that⌠he was thinking of someone else. When I sat in his lap, too, Iâm sure.â

Sad
1. Everyone better know this by now, but that which cannot be seen by @gizkasparadiseâ is my go-to âget emotionally wreckedâ fic. I will never stop talking about it. Fuck I am thinking about Rukia and Byakuya in that giant house thinking about their dead spouses again f u c k
2. Metaesthesia by @lucymonsterâ is another heart-ripper-outer. Itâs a little hard to explain, but Renji and Byakuya swap bodies, and itâs about Renji sort of... turning into Byakuya and it is an amazing exploration of character and also amazingly sad.
3. Is The Curse of the Zanpakuto by c2t2 sad or is it just horrifying? Itâs both. Itâs a (much) darker take on Rukia and Renjiâs time in Inuzuri and it is indelibly printed on my headcanons and I donât like to say itâs my favorite, but it might be my more important fanfic. [contains sex]
4. The primary reason I can never really get behind IchiRuki as a ship is because I get too sad thinking about Renji and Orihime. But sometimes, I feel like feeling sad about Renji and Orihime and then I read this wild abandoned star: a romance in twenty by the genius paperiuni (who also wrote The Roots of Heaven one of all-time Great Works of Fanfiction)
5. I donât know if The Red Devil of Inuzuri by @junko222 is actually sad, but it makes me sad. Itâs a what-if where Renji gets all fucked-up after Rukiaâs adoption and ruins his life, which I think is only a thin hair away from canon and I am constantly thinking about this.
Funny
For some reason, this category was really hard for me? None of these are straight-up screwball comedy, they are just fics where I really like the writerâs sense of humor.
1. Look, I assume you wanted Bleach recs, but the actual funniest fanfic in existence is Bruce Wayne Banned from Walmart by @unprettyâ this is not up for debate.
2. âMildly bad things happen to Byakuya and he gets upset about itâ is one of my favorite categories of comedy, and @thegreenfaeryâ is one of my favorite practitioners of it. Saturday 7th November 1987: The Wedding Party is my favorite example of her humor. In the interest of full disclosure, she wrote it for me, but also, itâs really funny. I have been meaning to re-read this for months; I probably should.
3. Not So Easy A by apearlinmyhead a GrimmIchi college AU. It has great banter and really great use of side characters, and itâs really, really funny. Every single interaction between Renji and Ichigo is comedy gold. Itâs unfinished, which is a shame, because she indicated she only had one more chapter to go. I have faith that she will come back and finish it someday.
4. I donât talk about @murderlight a lot, because sheâs already super-famous and doesnât need my help, but among other things, her fics are hilarious (when they are being hilarious, less so when they they are slamming you over the head with a baseball bat of feels). Both Cat Scratch Fever đ and A Demon in the Rough đ are tremendously good, and I am really excited that she has said sheâll be picking up the latter again soon.
5. I have read Become a Ghost by @hardlyfatal several times, and it always makes me laugh a lot, but more in a âSkeletor cackles and shakes his fists at the skyâ way, because it has so many great Extremely Fanfiction plot twists. It is also very funny-- itâs got a great humorous narration style, and there are a bunch of turns of phrase in it that stick with me to this day.

I always feels goofy about revealing my Tastes in Pornography, but, eh, whatever. Iâm putting this under a cut, and by clicking it, you are Legally Agreeing Not to Judge Polynya Too Much. Suffice it to say, these all include explicit sex.
1. The best RenRuki porn is IchiRenRuki porn and the best IchiRenRuki porn is written by thekurosakiconundrum. I refuse to choose between Eighteen and I Like It , Solutions for the Three Body Problem , and I Get By , but the last one includes Orihime, which is a selling point in my book.
2. Rukia Gives Renji a Haircut by Nicole4211 is the perfect Renruki porno. It is unapologetically horny. It is heartfelt. It is long, and yet every time they Do It, thereâs some new little twist.
3. Leaving Inuzuri by @sillier-things is about a story about Rukia and Renjiâs feelings for each other right before they, um, leave Inuzuri (as the title would imply). This one is more of a âstory that has sex in itâ than straight-up smut, but it is sweet and thoughtful and another one of those âinvades and shapes your headcanonsâ and itâs one of my all-time favs.
4. I just really like Stay by eosdawnaurora? Itâs just like...what youâre looking for in a Renruki porno? I mean, itâs got a lot of framing story of them being at a party and they have some verbal sparring and fancy outfits and stuff and I just like it.
5. Meant to Be by valentineninja is a PWP based on ~an omake~ and I respect that so, so much.
