Now, Julien also withholds information from his father re: the Stone of Nightsong etc, and there's evident distrust on both ends, especially as Julien did betray Raimond's trust directly by going after Thjazi. But right from the beginning, Raimond's mode of expressing his anger with Julien was to rather publicly impress upon him that he is unworthy of his station when he behaves inappropriately,ie, asking his men not to salute, asking him "can you do this?" when Aranessa entrusts him with a task, etc. I have mentioned earlier how Raimond's disappointment felt more absolute than Maya's anger, and I am curious whether Raimond was on some level engaged in playing into his own confirmation bias about his dishonorable son by withholding the responsibilities that Julien has shown he does prioritize fulfilling. Both of Julien's parents take terribly to being proven wrong, after all. And to that end, I am also curious if this was the realization that prompted Raimond to start that final, unfinished conversation with his son.
