Culzean Castle, Scotland (by David Nicholls)
It's that time of year when you are going to see some "Irish" t-shirts in stores and can get your Shamrock Shake at Mickey D's. There will be St. Patrick's Day parades this weekend and next.
And I just want to be a nerdy know-it-all for a second. St Patrick's Day was originally a religious holiday (as most holidays were, holy + day = holiday); it still is in some places, like some actual Irish people from Ireland who believe in God--though the American parade/festival mentality seems to be gaining steam in some parts of Ireland, I am told.
St Patrick's Day as we know it is deeply rooted in the United States. Though it's been celebrated here since 1600 in the territory that became Florida, the tenor of the holiday greatly changed after the Great Famine of Ireland.
You may have been told in school that the famine occurred because a blight wiped out potato crops in Ireland. This is true but doesn't address the crux of the matter.
The blight started in North America and travelled to Ireland and into much of Europe. But we only think of it as an Irish problem because the Irish were too poor to eat other foods.
Some scholars have said it was a "man made crisis" and I agree that is true. Other crops in Ireland were not affected by the blight, in fact, this time was considered one of "plenty", but all that food was used to feed the English. Not the Irish.
Nor were the English quick on providing aid, "There is such a tendency to exaggeration and inaccuracy in Irish reports that delay in acting on them is always desirable," said Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel after initial reports of the catastrophe.
Workhouses designed to assist the poor and starving were closed prematurely. "The only way to prevent the people from becoming habitually dependent on Government is to bring the food depots to a close," said Charles Trevelyan, the man who was literally in charge of famine relief. He also said some gems like, Sure the famine is bad but "the moral evil of the selfish, perverse and turbulent character of the people" was the real problem. Great guy; he became a Baronet.
The soup kitchens, which replaced the workhouses were also closed prematurely, were widely believed to serve portions too small even for children and lacking any nutritional value due to them being watered down to feed more people than anticipated by the brilliant British government.
A million people died in Ireland from famine and disease and nearly 2 million left Ireland for other parts of the world. Including my father's family. (If they survived the "Coffin Ships" leaving their home.)
So when I said above that the tenor of the holiday changed, it was because of increasing Irish Nationalism and anger at Britain. Now, Ireland is a Republic (though it's not unified, yet) and we are proud of those who stayed and fought to make that happen.
We are also proud just to still be alive anywhere. The population of Ireland is 6.9 million now--slowly nearing the 8.5 million it was home to before the famine--but people with Irish ancestry across the world has been measured to be about 80 million people. Take that, Sir Robert Peel.
The English actively tried to kill us. Nevertheless, we persisted. A lot.
I hope you have a Happy St. Paddy's Day (it's Paddy not Patty). Drink some Guinness. Dance some jigs. Definitely eat some potatoes (Boil 'em! Mash 'em! Stick 'em in a stew!) But please remember that when people are starving, you should feed them. Don't be like the English government.
In fact, as I write this there is a crisis in Turkey and Syria. It just so happens that the Sultan of Turkey wanted to donate money to Ireland (10,000 pounds) but since Queen Victoria donated just 2,000, he was told it would be against protocol.
Overly Honest Methods in science.
ooh this version has some ones i haven’t seen before, priceless
#we chose macrocystis because every other kelp was rotting at that time of year #we kept the crabs 12 to a sea table because we were sharing the space and couldnt use more #the crabs were subject to a non-natural light cycle because other researchers kept leaving the lights on overnight (via Dicrocoeliumdendriticum)
Archaeologist. We sometimes choose places to dig because our gut says “this is nice, I’d settle here”. I’ve had field directors say “this has paleo energy” about areas. Often we see big hill in our dig area, we dig on big hill.
Most recently, I’ve found two sites because I was walking to my next hole and saw some petrified wood I wanted. Started picking up pieces and saw a half buried biface lmao.
Other site, I was walking and imagined a little native girl running along the ridge. I had a gut feeling to dig like 5m from where the hole was. Found a utilized petrified wood flake. Could’ve written it off as a plow fact, but due to all the pet wood I’d been collecting throughout the area (I’m a greedy little thing who wants pretty rocks), I knew the was it was broken was inconsistent to how the pet wood naturally breaks.
What sealed the deal for me was cleaning the mud off, and it cut me so, yup, definitely utilized.
So glad you commented this because I was looking for the term for “people saw a pretty rock and took it with them” forEVER now and couldn’t find it. Fuckin love manuports
eternal human urges:
shiny rock!!
throw object in body of water
big hill. climb.
not come in to lab on weekend
We found our T. rex last summer by just walking around and sticking a very long, thin stick in the mud until we hit something hard, then we dug.

When The Green Man pub went out of business, not only was it abandoned, it was sealed up underground, where it still lies buried beneath this shopping mall.
It currently lies beneath four retail shops and can only be accessed by a hole under in the commercial center.
The Green Man in Loughborough, UK was a popular local pub decorated like a Medieval castle with large wall murals depicting knights and life in the middle ages. The murals still remain, as well as the benches and the bar complete with dusty beer glasses.
It closed its doors for the last time in 1993 when its entrance was walled up during renovation work on the shopping center.
It still has electricity and this sitting area is intact.
Lovely curved wood bar with a now-rusty foot rail.
One of the Medieval murals.
A former DJ for the pub submitted some old photos to the local paper, taken at the Green Man between ‘87-’88.
This was the entrance as it looked in the mall back then.

A display from a smalltown second hand bookstore. What has been found in books.
A) I love this Tweeter an irrational amount
B) I mean, yes, be careful with food while camping, but who could possibly anticipate a bear having that kind of restaurant loyalty and GPS?
Check out my ongoing comic Crow Time. It has crows, and also neat pantheons of epic beasties.
I know many of you out there are feeling a bit down. Have a crow to Wouldn’t it be Nice by the Beach Boys to lift your mood.
He stops and looks both ways?!?
You wanna know what makes this better?
Crows normally walk. This one seems to have both legs working, so he’s not hopping out of necessity, he’s doing it for fun. Corvids can sometimes be seen doing things like this for no evident reason other than enjoyment.
This is my new favorite post
I can’t ever not reblog.

hey!! i used to have a huge problem with procrastination but i would say i’m holding up pretty okay these last days and doing a good job at balancing out my days. i’m by no means perfect and still waste time every so often but i hope i can help some of you hehe.
do what gets you in a “productive“ mood 🍊
for me, it’s getting ready and putting on a fun outfit, for you it may be working out in the morning or completing some quick tasks like putting some things away etc. figure out what gets you started. this helped me a lot, especially after i laid in bed doing nothing, it’s much easier to do these kind of tasks than just start studying.
have a fun morning routine 🍊
something to look forward to. i love breakfast and listening to an audiobook. you can try to incorporate journaling, playing with a pet, listening to your fav music, doing fun makeup, … it will get way easier to get up in the morning.
maximize your space / use it in a smart way 🍊
i have a sofa bed so i make to sure it’s in the sofa state when studying, so i don’t get tempted to lay down. you could also make your bed in the morning and make a rule it’s only for sleeping. when you like to work in bed just change the layout like moving the pillows. make your brain associate studying with certain things. turning on a specific lamp, candles, certain music, idk even smth like putting your hair up. also best invention ever made are theses thingies making your books stay up (how are they called???). first of all your neck doesn’t hurt as much anymore, books take up less space and they’re also really practical for your laptop.
practice 🍊
when doing exercises you already have the answers to, try doing them without help and then correct yourself like a teacher with a red pen. i find i then know which mistakes are typical for me and remember the correct answer better.
be flexible 🍊
if you make a plan and find it doesn’t work out for you, change it. adjust your studying for subjects. i can read for 50mins but i can’t revise flashcards for that long. that may be completely different for you. i also don’t really like making a schedule because it just always seems to get interrupted. you may work fine with one. just try things out and find what works for you.
have things to look forward to 🍊
i need breaks. i like to take a midday break and watch youtube or a show and i study in 50min tacts with 10min breaks in between. i rest in the evening and do something i like. organize your days in a way that doesn’t make you burn out.
get enough sleep!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🍊
hear me out. i didn’t want to believe it. but it makes such a huge difference. i know this is (sadly) not realistic for everyone but ever since i sleep enough, i’m way happier? and motivated. i can concentrate better and in the end get more done than when i would sleep less.
revision 🍊
if you need to memorize material go through it trying to repeat it without looking. then mark the stuff you don’t know (highlight/sticky notes). if you go through your material later you will know what you really need to revise and save time.
and most importantly: be gentle to yourself. don’t overwork yourself. don’t compare yourself to others. forgive yourself when you are not “productive“. your worth is not messured by that!!! okay?
