An analysis of Ch. 3's Alternative Route

Mantle (alt. SWORD route) is undeniably odd. While superficially similar to Snowgrave and reminiscent of Undetale's merciless route, a holistic analysis of tone, story impact, and of course presentation show it's something quite different. Even the exactly 5 characters which allude to the alternative routes in any official capacity – the numbers on the /chapter5/ page of the Spamton Sweepstakes – mark it out as a ‘black sheep’.

However, I believe this oddness permits the astute reader valuable insight into the overarching story of Deltarune – perhaps even more than Toby Fox intended – recontextualizing the weird routes of Ch. 2 and 4, and foreshadowing what's to come. I would like to take a brief ramble to analyze these features, and present what I believe will be the ultimate conclusion to the game & Toby's 15 year-old fever dream.
