Indian film recs - all genres, no particular order uploaded by request.
Jab tak hai Jaan - Romance drama with Sha ruhk Khan. Modern setting with some silliness, a time skip, and amnesia.
Rab ne bhana de jodi - Romance drama, easy watching with an arranged marriage/alter ego starring SRK.
Kalaank - set at the brink of India-pakistan /split, a doomed romance/arranged marriage tragedy with Alia Bhatt.
Devdas - at the time the most expensive Bollywood movie ever made. The ‘leaving Las Vegas’ of Bollywood. Tragic romance set in 19th century. Stunning dance scenes by dance master Madhuri Dixit. SRK being serious and Ashwarya Rai acting her socks off.
Jodhaa Akbar - Mughal emperor falls in love with Hindi lady. Chick flick romance with silly historical battles, politics and elephant wrestling?! Ashwarya rai and Hrithik Roshan
Padmavaat - based on medieval poem, a period piece with some good songs and an excellent villain performance by Ranveer Singh. But a bit grim!
Ram Leela - literally Romeo and Juliet with Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh.
Dilwale Dulhania le Jehenge - the highest grossing romance/comedy family movie of all Indian cinema. Very charming and good songs. 90s nostalgia with very young SRK and Kajol.
RRR - fucking fantastic action bromance, set in British colonial India with exceptional songs. Ray Stevenson and Elsa from Indiana Jones as the villains, Ram Charan and NT Rama Rao Jr.
Bahubhali 1 & 2 - two part historically inspired revenge story. Epic and grandiose, but also a ‘bros’ film.
Baijiro Mastaani - historical love triangle with stunning sets and fabulous songs. Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh.
Magadheera - Telegu historical reincarnation movie with huge horny energy. The villain chews the scenery. The heroine is fun and cheeky, and there’s Ram Charan riding a horse.
KGF chapters 1 & 2 - grim semi historical gang warfare in two chapters with a third coming. Basically six hours of an Indian man with excellent suits killing people and looking cool.
Om shanti Om - revenge ghost story with reincarnation. A Bollywood film about Bollywood so self referential, lots of cameos. Plenty of ear worms. Early appearance of Deepika Padukone opposite SRK. The favourite we keep coming back to.
Thugs of Hindostan - silly historical fantasy with pirates vs British empire. Excellent comedy role for Amir Khan, opposite Katrina Kaif and Amitabh Bachan.
Gangubhai - grim but badass true story of a prostitute turned mafia queen. Alia Bhatt rocks this part.
1 and 2 - motorbike police vs thieves with comedy and chase scenes. Excellent songs. Abishek Bachan and Chopra combo.
Dhoom 3 is more of a heist movie with Aamir Khan. Still fun.
Dostana - ridiculous comedy about two guys that pretend to be gay to get an apartment, but they accidentally fall in love with their roommate. Great laughs, even if it’s a bit behind the times on gay rights. Top tier acting from Abishek Bachan and Priyanka Chopra.
Sholay - a classic of Hindi cinema, 70s Amitabh Bachan and his fellow thief are hired by an ex detective to take out a gang terrorising a rural village. You would not believe how this film ends. It is dated though.
Yamadonga - NT Rama Rao Jr as a thief who kidnaps a “rich” girl only to find her extended family treat her like Cinderella and are trying to have her killed for her money. Stick with me here - the middle of the movie is a subplot where he angers the gods by interfering and ends up becoming king of hell. Yes it’s wild. Yes it’s fucking fabulous.
Rangasthalam - a deaf kid and his older, college educated brother take on the mafia controlling their remote town. An interesting representation of rural India. Good songs, and a great performance by Ram Charan.
Temper - a corrupt cop who changes his tune when he falls in love. We weren’t sure about this until the turn in the third act, but it a great ending. Rape and violence mentioned heavily. NT Rama Rao Jr
Animal - this film turns from an episode of Succession into bloody John wick. Wild, bloody action and I have literally never seen so much fucking in an Indian film. Ranveer Singh absolutely nails it.
Ghajini - Bollywood memento. That’s it, it’s memento except it breaks for a Bollywood romance in the middle. Aamir Khan.
Mughal e Azam - for the brave who are up for a black and white 60s production. Like watching old theatre, this is set in medieval Mughal court. A CLASSIC Bollywood but can be hard to get into.
Eega- revenge reincarnation story where the main character gets turned into a fly…yes. You heard correctly.
* almost all Bollywood contains some sort of romance and usually songs, though not always sung for the camera. Yes even if it’s the most serious action. See Ghajini for a classic example.
