in the beginning, i was a huge tyannie fan. post S5, i'm an unapologetic annie/noah shipper. however, i may start a crackship for annie/leif XD

favorite character: mel king! (i am her and she is me. seeing her on screen made me tear up. i literally started watching this show because i saw a gifset of just her 🥹) my major ships: - mohabbot - babyshark - melohn - whitaking other minor ships: tbh i think i've seen at least one really good fanfic making a case for almost every combination of characters. there are so many visions and i see all of them XD

Hey, quick PSA for young or otherwise inexperienced fic writers:

"*****smut marked with asterisks so you can skip!*****""

Don't. Don't do this.

You let readers know what your fic contains through proper tagging and rating. Content warning notes at the top of the chatter are also great. You can even summarize key "this is the plot relevant stuff you missed of you're skipping this chapter" notes at the bottom too! This is a much smoother reading experience.

This is HELL on screen readers which is a disability access issue. Screen readers will read out every single asterisk you put, which I have seen done as entire page breaks. It's an awful reading experience. Please just don't.

Readers do not need their hands held through the reading experience. If they're enjoying the fic but don't care for smut, they can just skim until it gets interesting again. If they REALLY don't like smut, you warned them. There's a back button. You don't have to do a special song and dance isolating out the specific parts you think might be "icky". (If you think those bits are icky and don't like writing them, consider just don't! Fanfic is a hobby we do for fun and you don't have to write anything you don't find enjoyable. There's plenty of readers for gen fic and smut free ship fic).

If someone reads something they don't like then gets mad at you, block em. They need to be responsible for their own choices. It's not your job to please everyone. Your job as a fic writer of his to tell an entertaining and engaging story. (The reverse is true for a reader that demands smut or says it would "improve" the fic but that's not the story you're trying to tell. Block button is your friend!)

This is also super common in scene breaks.

Please, please don't try to span the entire page with whatever symbol you're using for your scene breaks. It takes an eternity for screen years to get through, and typically has me noping out of even the most interesting stores.

Instead, use just three (or fewer) make. Three is standard, and does the job without making your story unreadable.

In general: please, think of the screen readers.

as a person whose only good trait is their eyes, this has eluded me until i was tasked to test websites with a screen reader.

It is hell

It is absolute hell

From navigation to listening to the voices

It's just awful

Since then I've tried to write with screen readers in mind because the number of websites that think about accessibility is SO SO SMALL

If you don't believe me, use NVDA which is a free accessibility tool. Otherwise you have to spend thousands of dollars for a slightly better one. Then try to navigate a website.

Re page/scene breaks:

If you're posting on AO3, there is a way to insert a horizontal line to indicate this.

Here's how you do it:

You click the button I circled there. That's it.

(If you do your own html, it's <hr />. Just be sure it's outside the <p> tag.)

It'll put a small horizontal line between two paragraphs, very much like what you would see in a printed book.

Much easier and tidier than a row of asterisks, doesn't fuck with screen readers, doesn't break when someone's reading on mobile, and you can use two in a row if you want a bigger gap between sections.

i know it was published in like, 2010, but i still don't appreciate dana sue's doctor scaremongering to her about possible diabetes for gaining 15 pounds over the course of two years. it's not that drastic an amount of weight and should be fairly easily reversible with better choices. if it turns out it's not, the doctor should actually do something to help instead of just guilting and shaming the poor woman.

i'm only 2% in, so i can hope dana sue unlearns her tendency to completely deprive herself of the food she wants, and she leans toward using her cooking skills to practice healthier habits. but to be honest, those hopes aren't that high. maddie spent all of the last book talking about how they all needed to avoid carbs and to avoid the temptations of certain foods - usually desserts. it's no wonder book annie has an eating disorder :/

i'm 37% in now, and i like how they're handling the annie situation thus far. but i really don't like how erik just managed dana sue's food choices in the last scene. at the end of the day, she is a grown adult with autonomy :P

note: erik's actor has done a pretty faithful rendition of the character from what i've heard so far

at first, i was really confused about why the show changed so much, but at 85% i've changed my mind. i like it, i think they tightened up the narrative in a way that definitely brings more positives than negatives to a screen adaptation.

don't get me wrong, i know small town gossip and mob mentality can get out of hand really easily. but. listening to Stealing Home (Sweet Magnolias Book 1) and hearing everyone constantly talk about the Horror of the ~ten year age gap between Maddie and Cal is still absolutely baffling.

"think of the children!" oh yeah, how dare they be made to think of a mother as a fully realized human being who is more than just Mom/Wife and that life is full of nuance.

i'm so happy Cal talked to Ty about it being about more than age, but rather life stages, and that the story repeatedly mentioned the double standard of the scrutiny over Maddie vs Bill's cheating.

(and i am doubly happy the show nixed annie's eating disorder storyline. the way the magnolias talk about it even briefly in this book really rubs me the wrong way, but i haven't yet put my finger quite on why.)

i was not expecting the deja vu. you know, the opening storyline being a guy named bill cheating on his wife and leaving her.

bill hamilton has even more gall than bill townsend though. ep 1.002 and asking his ex-FIL to persuade his ex-wife's (reasonably hostile) family to attend his wedding. all to make the other woman feel better.

bill h. may be a wealthy lawyer, but he's still a classic example of the dude who thinks he's entitled to a certain lavish lifestyle, but he can't accept he only had it because of his wife's connections.

it's worth noting that OW isn't pregnant though. she just got with her best friend's dad 🫠

yeah, i know it's because the actor didn't come back for S5, but still.

it's just so damning for tyler's character that he didn't even show up for his aunt helen's wedding. it's expected that he needs to apologize profusely to annie, but if he ever comes back i want him groveling to helen too.

i still like the vibe at the logan office way more than at forrester tho

dylan's my favorite, and i'm annoyed i haven't seen her in like a week

deke's an absolute angel

and remy can jump off a cliff, the no-boundary-having fuckin' creeper
