Hello ım a new artist on the ınternet and ı just got a commison.

I know you dont do them anymore but could you give some advice on your experience and give some advice on how to be not you know... used (?) like in general could you give some advice on it please?

Congratulations on your first commission! That's a big milestone.

Tbh I don't actually have a ton of experience with taking commissions, I haven't taken them for a long time now and there are a lot more tools available now than I had back then. When I did take them though I would always take a 50% deposit upfront no matter what the total price was.

I would also advise having some kind of simple contract. it might seem like overkill but as you take on more commissions you're gonna want certain protections. Detail how many revision rounds are allowed and when (I do 2, one after a sketch and one right before final rendering), an approximate timeframe for completion, when payment is due and through what means. How the commissioner is allowed to use the piece is also important (can they resell? use it for personal promotion (ads for example)?. Nowadays it's also important to include protections against AI training and usage.

I think there are now websites dedicated specifically for artists taking commissions that can allow for seamless contract signing and make it easier to communicate progress to clients. If anyone knows a good site sound off in the replies!!
