I have been beating those passages and excerpts and quotes over the head of so many people for so long.
The capitalist class does not literally have fucking annual meetings where they plan how to oppress the working class. They do not literally get together and scheme about how to exacerbate racial tensions to reduce worker unity. There is no grand conspiracy to ensure every retail and service job is lean staffed.
The bourgeois has certain class interests. Those interests require certain conditions be met. Those conditions can be met through only so many courses of action. The reason why every job is lean staffed is because lean staffing is a great way to reduce labor costs. That’s it. There’s no grand plan to make sure every worker is enslaved to their job and unable to schedule around it. That’s an unavoidable side-effect, an afterthought (if ever it’s a thought) to the bourgeois.
Sometimes the capitalist class does, in fact, get together and cooperate, in places like those big business conferences and at their ritzy get-togethers where they talk shop; and there are cooperative projects among their class, such as think-tanks and similar organizations meant to advance their interests.
But crucially, those are, again, outcroppings of a single simpler truth: in order for them to continue to be bourgeois, they must continue to own capital; in order to continue to own capital, they must continue to acquire profit. Everything else is in service to that, and every suffering the proles bear as a result is just fallout from that.
