I'm just curious about this, as someone who was raised conservative and broke free from this line of thinking before being taken by the pipeline.

Now you must continue this cycle and avenge him as is your duty as his son. But there is a problem: As important as it is for you to avenge your father, it is equally important for you not to kill your mother. Kinslaying is a high taboo for a reason. If we all killed our family members there would be no family left. If the family can’t coexist then neither can the tribe or the city or the kingdom. Yet if murders go unavenged a similar social collapse is likely: if nothing happens in response to the destruction of life then what is protecting life in this society?

You are assured by the Powers That Be that vengeance is the rightful way. You take your sword and murder your mother. There is nobody to avenge her, and so the Furies, gods of vengeance, do it for her. You carry the stain of her death upon your soul and are tormented for it for the rest of your days. When you die it will be just, a final vengeance in a cycle that your father began, and your family and kingdom will be no more.

You do not accept this.

You appeal to wisdom and justice itself, which contrives to assemble a council of fellows to determine, using their mortal wits and spirits, if you deserve this fate.

They decide, by slim majority, that you do not. That the cycle must be broken.

You are released from your torment. Your family is not destroyed. Your kingdom is not abandoned. The old ways of blood for blood are left behind, and the new ways of justice, trial by peers, and socialized jurisprudence are embraced. Blood feuds end, wars averted.

You wish, anyway. 3,000 years of people retelling your tale and spinning their own versions across time and space, desperate pleas to move on from the barbarity of vengeance, to see past the empty satisfaction of eye for an eye, and still humanity throws its most vicious cruelties back and forth in an awful, unending game of catch. Vile words turn to vile acts turn to vile strikes turn to vile deaths and on and on and on.

People revile you for daring to preach forgiveness. You never did. You just wanted a better way forward than blood and death and suffering.

That’s the feminism I grew up with: encouraging people to recognize that fighting sexism and restrictive gender roles helps folks of every gender. We’d push back on the idea that feminists hate men, pointing to inclusive feminist literature and how many men are feminists.

Now, there are so many people insisting that the solution to patriarchy is to openly hate and ostracize men no matter what. Why? What is the benefit? It’s certainly not effective in fighting oppressive structures to exclude half the population from your cause on the basis of immutable traits. It may feel cathartic to say horrible things about men and try to punish them for your frustrations with patriarchy. But the only actual effect I see is the increasing right-wing radicalization of young men, who are being told that the left hates them for the way they were born and presented with an abundance of proof that it’s true.

Do you feel bored of the posts asking for help from Gaza? You’re right, but imagine our situation as we live this war day after day for 13 months. Do you think we’re tired too?!!

Asking for help is not easy; it’s very embarrassing, especially for a family that used to live a decent life. My husband and I completed our university education with distinction, worked in respectable jobs, and were used to helping others, not asking for help. But the war has turned our lives into a nightmare; we lost our home, our sources of income, and even our ability to provide the simplest of needs.

I'm Hanan. For the past 13 months, we have been struggling to get healthy food and medicine for my child, whose weak body was attacked by infection, and for my elderly mother-in-law, who fell into a coma for several days and almost lost her life due to anemia caused by our inability to provide healthy food, as prices have risen more than 10 times. Now, we have run out of everything. While you are reading my message, my family and I are trying to survive amidst all kinds of suffering.

What was once a beautiful dream and reality has now become a nightmare. Starvation is one thing, but starving, freezing, and being forced to flee in the middle of the night when tanks suddenly arrive in your area, running for your life and your family’s life under fire, leaving behind everything you built over the years, and returning after 5 months of suffering in displacement and tents to find that your home, where you lived your happiest moments, is nothing but rubble, is something completely different! 💔😓

Can you feel my broken heart now? Can you imagine what I’m going through at this moment? Everything I am living now cannot be described with words, and every moment here is filled with pain and fear. We desperately need your help, as we live in hope of escaping Gaza to save our lives and live safely away from the explosions.

You might feel powerless to stop this genocide, but you can certainly save my family. We appeal to your compassionate hearts to help us escape this catastrophe, which the human mind cannot even fathom.
