Her friend eventually gave up with a frown and took up her cloth to clean again.

“This is mean,” Kate complained in a murmur as she sprayed the glass. “You knew every inch of mine and Anthony’s business.”

“That wasn’t exactly by choice,” Sophie reminded her, and Kate at least had enough shame to look a tiny bit sheepish. “There’s nothing to tell, Kate, that’s why. He must have been here to see family or friends for Christmas or something, but he doesn’t live here. It was entirely random that we ran into one another. We’ll probably not see each other again.”

Sophie comforted herself that none of that was a lie, exactly. Benedict Bridgerton didn’t live here, most of the year - he was back in town to see family for Christmas - it was the strangest kind of circumstantial chance that the man she’d had the dreamiest one night stand with a year earlier had ended up related to her best friend’s boyfriend.

And no matter what he had implied after he’d left her flat in the early morning, they probably weren’t going to see each other again.

Right?

Sophie’s finger tapped again at her phone screen without her permission; it lit up with nothing but the time, telling her that there were six hours left of the year.
