Deaf and disabled people are especially vulnerable to climate disruption.
Take the case of disability communities in Puerto Rico, who faced catastrophic harm in the wake of Hurricane Maria in 2018. To call the hurricane a ānatural disasterā is to obscure the way United States colonialism laid the groundwork for the devastation. U.S. economic austerity policies left the island subject to poor infrastructure, a shaky electrical grid, patchy medical systems and inadequate public services ā all of which were stressed to breaking point when the hurricane hit. And when it comes to disability, eligible Puerto Ricans receive an average of $74 a month, a fraction of the disability benefits provided to U.S. citizens on the mainland.
Social inequality can be a death sentence. Consider Benilda Caixeta, a wheelchair user living in New Orleans who relied upon the cityās paratransit system for accessible transportation, a service notorious for its unreliability in the best of circumstances. As Hurricane Katrina advanced, she worked for days to arrange transportation to evacuate. But despite repeated promises, her driver never arrived. When floodwaters rushed into her apartment, Caixeta drowned ā waiting for transit that never came.
When we tell Caixetaās story, we face a choice: We could use her story to illustrate the essential vulnerability of people with disabilities; or we could use it to tell a political story about disability discrimination, about transportation systems that are inequitable and unreliable even in fair weather ā and that fail, utterly, in the face of a storm. The political story makes plain that Caixetaās inability to evacuate isnāt a personal tragedy caused by disability, but a public failure: a devastating indictment of the deadly cost of ableism and inequality.
I work at a daycare with infants.
One of our baby girls is fat, in the 99th percentile for her age. She is super cute and sweet. Lately, she has been sick with various breathing issues, so she has been reluctant to take her bottles. Normally, sheāll take 4 ounces of formula at lunch and 8 ounces in the afternoon. Today, I was lucky to get to her take 5 all day.
There was a substitute covering a lunch break in my classroom today. We emphasized to her that we need to keep trying to get the baby to drink her bottle until she finished it. She said, āWhy are you guys so worried about taking her bottle?ā
My coworker replied, āThatās where all her nutrients are. She needs the nutrients and the water.ā
To which the substitute replied, āBut sheās so fat. She doesnāt need it.ā
Thin privilege is a small, pretty baby getting better childcare because the caretaker doesnāt think sheās too fat to be allowed to eat.
This reminds me of a cousin of mine who ended up with her kids being taken away from her by social services for a number of reasons but mostly for nearly killing her baby daughter. How?
By starving her. She insisted that her baby was ātoo fatā and had an aim to remove any and all āchubbynessā so her baby would be thin. Sheād already been warned by her doctor about the baby not getting enough food, but insisted she knew best.
After several months of this her baby passed out cold one day and was rushed into hospital where the doctors found her to have severe malnutrition, a low body temperature and low pulse rate. They asked my cousin what sheād been feeding her daughter and she said āone bottle of skimmed milk a day. I donāt want her growing up fat.ā
Even after nearly killing her daughter my cousin maintained her view that fat = bad and ended up with all her kids taken from her because she was starving them and neglecting them.
When your fatphobia leads you to starving your own children then youāve got serious problems.
(Note. She still, to this day, maintains the view that she was right and the doctors were wrong. āThey just want fat kids so they can keep employed treating them for all those diseases that being fat causes.ā = her actual words.)
My mom had me dieting with her when I was eleven. She had me eating less than 600 calories a day because she was worried I was going to āget huge.ā She even grounded me once because she found out my friends were bringing me lunches! I ended up passing out, going to the ER, and getting two IVs at once BC I was so goddamn dehydrated. Soooooo surprised they didnāt call child services⦠And looking back, this was the root of my anorexia. Iām nearly 22 and still fighting it. Please donāt starve your fucking children.
For fucks sake babies are SUPPOSED to be fat, what is wrong with people? Itās just stored energy, and growing children need stored energy - an 11 year old is just about to hit some major growing years. Damn.Ā
Fatphobia
Is
Real
and it kills
This is no joke. people will literally starve their own babies cause they donāt want them getting fat. A parent brought in their six month old baby who was having breathing issues and kept getting sick. the parent was asked if the baby was eating regularly and the parent straight up told the doctor that they only feed the baby once a day. ONCE A DAY. A FUCKING BABY. they even had the nerve to say because they didnāt want the baby to get fat. people like this are real. they would rather have a dead baby than a fat one.
My youngest son is a very big boy and has been since he was born. When he was 10 months old I took him for his well-baby check and vaccinations. The nurse noted his weight and said, quite casually, āHe is in the 99th percentile for weight so he is at risk for obesity. You may want to keep an eye on that.ā I said,Ā āHe is exclusively breastfed. He refuses to eat any solids yet.ā What did she expect me to do? What would it mean to ākeep an eye onā an exclusively breastfed babyās weight?Ā
She backed off saying,Ā āWell he looks fine!ā ā proving once again that weight bias is not truly about health ā But I know many other parents who are not as informed as I am about weight science and size diversity would react to this interaction by policing their childās food intake, if not as an infant, then when he was an older child. This is exactly the type of seemingly-inconsequential interaction that starts the ball rolling on a lifetime of dieting, disordered eating, negative body image, and weight-based abuse for too many fat people.
Years later when he was five, another doctor measured his weight and height and commented that he is off the charts on both, butĀ āat least he is in proportion.ā And if he was notĀ āin proportion,ā I am sure I would have been advised once again toĀ āwatch his weight.āĀ
I no longer allow healthcare providers to weight my children unless it is absolutely medically necessary. They are unable to control their weight talk, which is a known harm for children.
We need to completely eliminate weight talk from medicine, especially when it comes to children. Even the smallest exposure can have terrible consequences.
Wtfā¦
A friend from college had been going to the doctor because she was having trouble breathing. She was told to lose weight. Over the course of several years, she went back to the doctors time and time again, telling them that sheād been sticking to the diet but because of her breathing problems she had been unable to even walk for more than 20 minutes at a time. The doctor got her into an exercise programme and told her that she just needed to really try to lose weight because that was clearly the reason for her breathing problems. By the time they found the tumour on her lungs, it was inoperable. She only lived three months after diagnosis. She was 25. Sheād had the tumour for over five years. The doctor was so focused on the fact that my friend was āfatā, that they refused to look for any underlying cause. They killed her.
Weight-first treatment KILLS. Fatphobia KILLS.
I have 2 scary stories to share about fatphobic doctors & parents harming their childs/patientsā health:
1. The 4 years old daughter of a friend of mine came to our house to spend the weekend. She gave me a letter from her mom that said that the child was in a glutenfree diet because she was getting āawfully fatā when eating cookies or bread (my celiac ass; who gets dhiarrea and loses a scary amount of weight whenever I eat something with gluten was like ā???ā).
You can bet that I went to the supermarket with the kid and told her āgo & take whatever you feel like eatingā and the poor child came back smiling with her arms full of biscuits and cupcakes.
She didnāt got sick (as a celiac would get) and told me later that she hated the diet her mother made her follow; because her cousins didnāt had to pass through that.
And whatās the scariest thing about this story? Her mother was a NURSE. A fucking nurse who didnāt have a clue of the harm that she was doing to her daughterās body!
2. My little sister started to feel fatigued and dizzy at 9 years old. She felt nauseated at the sight of food and had abdominal pain that increased with physical activity.
Mom got her to the ER and the doctor dismissed it saying: āsheās fat and probably is feeling ill after eating too much burgers, get her to make some exercise and she will be better in no timeā.My mom didnāt felt ok with the diagnosis and took my sister with a second doctor who also told her that āthe child was just fatā.
My sisterās skin was starting to get yellow as the days passed and the abdominal pain was getting awful so my mom (heaven bless her!) got her to the ER for the third time:
SHE HAD STAGE 4 HEPATITIS AND WAS ABOUT TO DIE.
She survived after a long and painful recovery who involved being in bed for a whole year (remember that weāre speaking of a 9 years old child). Luckily they saved her liver and she didnāt went through a transplant⦠but let this sink:
If it werenāt for my mother, fatphobia would have killed her. Fatphobia kills kids and teenagers, fatphobia kills inocent people everyday. It treats human beings as lesser than others and hurts them in their most vulnerable times.
Itās a real shame that we all have so much stories to share about this issue. A REAL SHAME.
Future doctors, interns, and residents following me:
FUCKING TAKE NOTE OF THIS!
Donāt let bias against your fat patients kill them!
(#and this is just when we actually go to the doctor and tell them we have problems #how many of us just give up #or wonāt mention anything that seems like too much of a āfatā problem)
iād really like my thin followers to reblog this if you can. fat people are already here for each other, we need you guys to help us out too. this is something i never see anyone actually talking about in-depth, and itās disappointing. be there for your fat siblings, too.
My aunt (who is literally psychotic now and lives in isolation with 6 cats, screaming at nothing all day) everytime I would visit her, she would make me eat with a small fork or spoon so I wouldnāt eat as much, when she cooked chicken we (me and my cousins) were only allowed to eat the chicken wings and not any actual meat and if I wanted to eat what we had for lunch as dinner she would yell at me and give me a kinder delice instead. My cousins had to live with that every day so now they eat so much unhealthy food because they never got to eat it when they were young.
Hey, please stay safe

Small account but my followers might have big accounts, idk so spread the word
I donāt care about your damn feed. re-fucking-blog this to save a life.
As a model myself, I really want to warn people big time about this.
Large name brands will never recruit via Instagram or social media, they will contact your agency to book you!
If you get any DMās from big brands like this especially if they donāt have a checkmark by their name (but donāt count on that either) they are scammers trying to take your money or even worse lead you into sex trafficking.
Stay safe and follow your gut! Never trust any unofficial recruiters!
stay safe guys

A very beautiful image of these smiley blackfoot. It seemed everything was alrightā¦
Photograph by Mary T. S. Schaffer in 1907.
I just love how humanizing this is, itās the first time Iāve seen us not depicted as the stoic archetype of this period
Pictured here are Sampson, Frances Louise, and Leah Beaver who actually were very close friends with the photographer and were regular subjects of her work. Itās amazing what happens when you view us as people rather than museum objects - you capture us as people, as friends, as lovers, as parents rather than the stoic image of genocide and colonialism in-progress.Ā
If youāre interested in learning more about female photographers and how they aided in representing native peoples through positive representation and ethical photography, I would suggest readingĀ āTrading Gazes.ā Mary T.S. Schaffer and other influential female photographers, and friends, of native peoples are given some much-needed recognition in this book while also discussing the white womanās place in our genocide and colonization.Ā
Everyone going shopping on Black Friday, be aware of three things:
The retail workers are working 12 hours shifts. We are threatened with losing our jobs if we donāt show up unless weāre dying in the hospital. I had an assistant manager show up with fucking strep because he wouldāve been fired otherwise. Yes, he did infect 7 and hospitalize 2 coworkers; who knows how many members of the public he infected.
The stores have, maybe, 5 of that special cheap thing youāre after. Corporate does this on purpose, and stores are not allowed to order enough. The prices arenāt even that much lower. They lie about how expensive something is to fool you into thinking youāre getting a discount. You arenāt.
Most of the workers you will come across will be new hires for the sole purpose of being bodies for about three months before theyāre fired. They actually donāt know anything because theyāve been working there for maybe two weeks, and have had no real training. I was once hired at Staples a week before Black Friday and expected to know how to deal with phones, coupons, the online ordering site, and AS400 after five 6-hour shifts. This is the kind of person you will likely be dealing with at Black Friday.
Do me and my retail family a favor and donāt shop Black Friday. Any company that needs a sale day like Black Friday to get their sales out of the red doesnāt deserve to be in business.Ā
This also goes for anyone that works shipment too. Weāre suddenly expected to stay as late as they want you to even if they know you donāt have a car and rely on a ride to get you to and from work and know you canāt stay late. Shipment workers will suddenly start getting berated for not getting things done and it is by far the most stressful time to be a shipment worker for any store. Especially when they throw in new hires that donāt know how to process things and are expected to work at the same pace as the people that have worked there for a while.
Retail is shit around the holidays, especially Black Friday
ok fellow millenials, itās time to kill black friday
LETāS KILL BLACK FRIDAY
Target is open until 1 am on thanksgiving to open 6 am Friday at the one I work at with people who will stock all throughout the night. Please be aware of this and donāt be crazy or rude
Seriously? Boycott Shopping Thursday AND Friday. The way retail workers are treated is ridiculous. Shop small local stores on Saturday if youāre able to in your area. Keep dollars in YOUR community and avoid big box stores/major chains (especially Amazon) if you at all can.
Also consider that this is an really excellent time to support independent artists and creators. Here are some really cool folks on tumblr who sell some excellent stuff:
@vaspider - awesome pride merch and geek stuff; everything from hats to patches to backpacks.
@winneganfake - really really really cool handcrafted leather goods.
@pangur-and-grim - pins, patches, and prints.
@musterni-illustrates - tarot decks and really awesome tarot patches.
@micahulrichdraws - hauntingly beautiful illustrations, tarot decks, clothing.
On top of all of that you know what people fucking love? They fucking love it when they get art that was made just for them. Now is probably the perfect time to commission a drawing of your sisterās dog or your momās favorite movie character or something like that. Show the artists on your dash some love and commission them so that you can give a one-of-a-kind gift and win christmas.
About Native American fashion, clothing, and jewelry.
Can I also suggest supporting some of the indigenous businesses listed here?
Forget Thanksgiving, fuck celebrating colonizers, support native people.
I absolutely refuse to shop on Black Friday, and will always give my monies to small independent creators instead.
Your life doesnāt have to be perfect for you to attract good things. Your mental health doesnāt have to be perfect to attract good things. You donāt have to be perfect to attract good things.
Ending the stigma of drug use will save lives.

This seems like a solid and real thing, I did my best to vet them and found their FB: https://www.facebook.com/Neverusealone/
They also seem to help with getting Narcan.
holy shit this can actually save Real Lives like dudes this isnāt a joke and isnāt to be passed off
my singing voice is good for showers and mornings in the kitchen and drunken nights and lullabies for babies who need sleep and im okay with this
i think itās silly to be ashamed of your art because itās not in a museum and of your voice because itās not selling out stadiums. there will always be people who enjoy and appreciate what you can do.
Idk why but this hit me really hard and Iāve been staring at it for a couple minutes.

Iāve seen so manyĀ ādrop the tā posts recently so here is your daily reminder that lgbt rights in america have only come as far as they have because of the hard work of trans people and specifically trans women
Reasons not to restrict:
everyone fucking hates capitalism, and it pisses them off, but they dont know they hate capitalism, so they just complain about every issue individually as if its some series of unconnected phenomena with no root cause
my utopia
The drag queen from this photo has spoken up about the photo.
I wonāt speak for all liberals, but Iād like to see a future where it isnāt a big deal for a woman in full modesty garb to sit next to a drag queen in NYC. Itās become a bit of a sensation, but her and I were just existing. The freedom to simply be yourself in a sea of people who arenāt like you is a freedom we all deserve.
The central irony is that this isnāt some hypothetical futureāitās just present day reality. This is a picture of two ordinary people going about their normal lives despite how haters want to politicize it lmao. So the underlying message is not āfuture liberals wantā itās āpeople conservatives want to eradicateā

Laverne Cox attends the 71st Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, California (September 22, 2019)
The handbag was specially designed by Cox. It featured the LGBTQ rainbow on one side with lettering that reads āOct 8, Title VII, Supreme Court.ā On the other side, the flag of the transgender community is featured, with the hashtag #TRANSISBEAUTIFUL. The reference to the Supreme Court case draws awareness to a looming trial: on October 8, the Supreme CourtĀ will begin hearingsĀ to decide if anti-LGBTQ employment discrimination qualifies as sex discrimination. The case will also assess whether LGBTQ workers are protected by the Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964,Ā an act thatĀ āprohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin.ā (vogue)
