My head hurts, so I'm going to read more Runemarks
Iām really unconvinced of the authorās ability to maintain a plot, but the thing is, every time it gets shaky, she just adds a new character. And sheās really good at characterization, so I stop caring so much about the plot in favor of delighting over this new, strange, wonderful mind. Itās an⦠unconventional approach, and really only throws the overall balance off more, but I find I really donāt care. At all.

āA man may plant a tree for a number of reasons. Perhaps he likes trees. Perhaps he wants shelter. Or perhaps he knows that someday he may need the firewood.ā -Joanne Harris, Runemarks
Waiting for āThe gospel of Lokiā in Italy Iām re-reading runemarks. Again. I want so much TGOL, Loki sass must be strong in this one :ā(
Marvel Loki and Runemarks Loki face to face
āAs for the rest of them, they thought Iād forgotten. I never did. āA stitch in time saves nineā, or so goes the saying among the Folk. Well, I could have saved the Nine Worlds. I could have halted Ragnarók. But the gods, in their arrogance and greed, had clarified my position. I would never be one of them. I knew that now. I was alone. I would always be alone. Iād learnt my lesson for good, this time.ā
ā The Gospel of Loki by Joanne Harris
Half-Born Hel, goddess of the Underworld, the daughter of Loki. One half of her body is alive and beautiful, representing the romanticised aspect of dying; the other half is dead, all rotting flesh and bones, reflecting the true nature of death.
From Runemarks by Joanne Harris. (I may have been re-reading the books againā¦)

So Iām reading a book called Runemarks by Joanne Harris. Thereās Norse gods in it and thereās a list of characters in the very beginning of the book. These are the actual descriptions:
Skadi, of the Ice People, bride of Njord, the huntress; goddess of destruction; principal enemy of Loki
Bragi, god of poetry and song; has no reason to love Loki
Idun, his wife, goddess of youth and plenty; was once kidnapped by Loki and handed over to the Ice People
Freyja, goddess of desire, once mortally insulted by Loki
Frey, the Reaper, her brother; no friend of Loki
Heimdall, golden toothed sentinel of the gods; hates Loki
Njord, sea god, once married to Skadi but now separated due to irreconcilable differences; agrees with her on a single subject - dislike of Loki
Odin, chief of the Aesir, blood brother of - and ultimately betrayed by - Loki
Frigg, his wife; lost her son because of Loki
Thor, the Thunderer, son of Odin; has more than one bone to pick with Loki
Sif, his wife; once went bald because of Loki
Tyr, god of war; lost his hand because of Loki
Baldr, son of Frigg; died because of Loki
Loki
Loki gets no description, but while reading all that shit he caused, all I could picture was this:
So⦠sometimes, I will read a book, and then later, I will tell someone, āI love this book.ā And theyāll be all like, āOh, okay, cool, uh-huh.ā And Iām like, āNo. You Donāt Understand. I. Love. This. Book.ā
Runemarks,Ā by Joanne Harris, is one such book. Itās basically everything I want in original fiction based off of Norse mythology. Not only is the heroine a 14 year old girl who is just plain awesome, but the characterizations for the Aesir and the Vanir are just amazing. Absolutely amazing.
Particularly for Loki, who, Iām sure it comes as no surprise, I have a definite soft spot for. Never, in fiction, have I ever come across a Loki who fits so well with what I see in the original Norse myths. Instead of a Loki who is malicious and villainous, he is a Loki who often is in over his head, but too stubborn (or too deep) to admit it. He plays both sides, and is always on his own, but he holds a certain loyalty for the Aesir, who took him in so long ago. Loki spends most of the book being kicked around, losing his glam, falling to pieces, getting beaten up by a 14 year old girl (main character Maddy Smith, being awesome as always), being out-played by the bad guys, and just generally being his usual self (as Norse mythology portrays). He is a perfect fit, and I love him dearly.
Okay, enough about Loki (as if, but for a little while, at least). Letās talk Odin. Odin, One-eye, the Allfather. The āGeneral,ā inĀ Runemarks. Odin is a mess, though somewhat less of one than Loki. His glam is in shreds, he looks like an old man, his allies are suspicious of him, at least one of them has totally turned against him, and to top it all off, heās got family members crawling out of the woodworks. All in all, pretty stressful. But heās still himself, still tricksy and false, still the man with the plan, even if the plan is something less like, āWe will conquer them all!ā and something more like, āWe will die trying.ā AND, Odin actually acknowledges his brother (ahem, that would be Loki, for those who arenāt in the know), and tries to save him, even when the rest of the gods would leave Loki to his doom. (See, itās really all about Loki in the end.)
Except for Maddy Smith, who really should have gone first, because she is, in fact, the main character. No spoilers, for those who will naturally want to read the book after reading this little⦠thing, but she is in fact a character from the myths, though she is an original character in her own right. Itās complicated, as so many things in Norse mythology are. But letās talk Maddy: powerful, intelligent, cunning, in her way. She trusts Loki, which is such a bad idea, I cannot even, but it endears me to her immensely, for reasons which Iām sure are obvious. Also, she adores Odin, who was her teacher since she was young, though she doesnāt know who he is exactly until later. Sheās got glam, which has nothing whatsoever to do with shiny things. (Well, okay, a little bit to do with shiny things.) Itās powerful. She beats up Loki a lot. Sometimes itās even on purpose. (No, but seriously though, the amount of times Maddy injures Loki on accident is bordering on running gag material by the end of the book.) She is literally the most important character in the book. Everyone is after her, in some way, shape, or form (puns, totally intended: read the book and youāll get them too!). And⦠and yeah, no spoilers, but Maddy is awesome.
I could get into all the other Aesir and Vanir and the excellent, excellent characterization. I could also get into the bad guys of the book, who are definitely NOT who youād expect them to be. But I wonāt, because there are like a gazillion of them. Suffice to say: characterization is spot-on, and the bad guys are delightfully twisty.
And may I just gush, one last time, about Loki? Because he is perfect, really. Spot-on. From the way he looks out for himself first of all, and his āfamilyā secondly, and reluctantly, to the way he is constantly getting into trouble (in one book!) because of poor planning, curiosity, or atrocious luck, to the way he tries so hard not to care, toĀ thisĀ gem: āāYour son?ā said Maddy. 'Gods, Loki, is there anyone here you'reĀ notĀ related to?āā His fear of snakes, his devil-may-care attitude hiding deeper hurts and cares, his delight in battle, his Fiery Aspect. All of it, is absolutely brilliant. I cannot gush enough.
Plus, thereās a sequel. :)
Okay, ranting done. Now, since you definitely want to read this book now, but donāt want to scroll to the top of this long long text post, hereās the title and author again:
