i think there is something to be said about this wave of white women made media that is so surface level with an underlying racist and/or insensitive bias and that refuses to engage with criticism. i'm talking taylor swift's the life of a showgirl, emerald fennell's wuthering heights, colleen hoover, the acotar series and booktok in general, etc. whenever you dare to raise concerns about the superficiality or the questionable writing or the treatment of poc in those pieces you get shut down with a "it's not that deep" or "let women have fun". this weaponisation of misogyny to justify slop made for mass consumption, especially considering how wide spread it is becoming, scares me quite a bit. to quote princess weekes, "the girlypopification of anti-intellectualism" is truly concerning, and i do believe it is linked to the rise of far right movements worldwide. if you refuse to engage with what you are being presented with, and exclusively consume brain smoothing content "for fun" then yeah you do become more susceptible to propaganda. it is that deep.
I recently watched Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights.
So, this thing is absolutely not trying to be a brainless fun teehee girliepop movie. It is indeed a deeply stupid film, but not on purpose. You can tell there's a genuine effort there to be artsy and meaningful! They're trying to use color symbolism and to make commentary about arousal and sex and abuse and offer some perspectives on gender and classism! This thing wants to be deep so badly that it's actively got a shovel in one arm and a fire hose in the other.
And that's what I've sort of found with most of this white woman made media with underlying racism and/or major insensitivity, which is that it's not that it's all supposed to be I guess "brain smoothing" good times.
It's that for a lot of it the lowkey racism isn't incidental, but rather a vital component of the fantasy they're trying to sell. They don't want you to point it out because that is a load bearing bit of bigotry that actually appeals to them.
White supremacy often gets sold to white women on the idea that they are desirable. Yes, ladies, you might be a second class citizen, but you're a beloved second class citizen who will be cherished and protected by your strong husband, who will keep you from being stolen away by savages who want to rape you. And isn't the idea of being so desired that there are savages who would risk dying to steal you away kind of exciting too? It's akin to the poor white men getting sold on the idea that they at least get to be part of the same group as the rich white men, that they are allowed to be above other men, even if they're still getting fucked over by classism.
White women on the whole are usually well aware that the second class citizen thing is at least kind of bullshit-y, but, it's harder to pry some of them away from the appeal of being the object of irrational desire. Heck, in some ways embracing the appealing aspects help with embracing the idea that it's also a bogus deal, since a component of it is that white women are beautiful victims and martyrs whose suffering is an aspect of their appeal. Which on the one hand is like, yeah sure y'know that makes sense, a lot of people want to be desired and to be told that their suffering is real. The trouble is that this comes as a package deal with the white supremacy baggage, it's not just being desired, it's being the desirable white, it's the dangerous exotic savages, the victim of the covetous gaze of said savages and also of masculine aggression in general, it's the only truly finding your match with a white guy, it's being innately and universally more desirable, and etc etc. It's a whole specific romantic fantasy that you can't really leave intact and pry away from the racism.
Which is just to say that I don't think the matter is necessarily being critical vs uncritical, anti-intellectual vs literary or so forth. A lot of fans of this kind of media will happily overthink it to the moon and back, and only bring out the "don't overthink it" argument for this specific topic. They don't need a discussion of the importance of critical thinking, they need to self-reflect, which is why the conversations on this usually turn into a rotten mess of defensiveness.
I got a 4 min long video of Kimchi dreaming today, so here's a clip
You get the whole walk cycle and the little sprint at the end.
Sometimes her sprints last for like 4 or 5 seconds and she can shoot herself off the couch or into a wall if she gets a grip with her back claws. If she does it next to a wall, her head smacking into it sounds like someone is trying to break into the house. She doesn't wake up.
Later in the dream she injured her paw and was limping, and earlier she caught something and ate it.
someone: this beauty standard was constructed with specific political purpose, and effectively dismantling the power structure that justifies itself through it requires us to give up using aspects of the body as a metaphor for morality or social worth
the notes:
it’s just a personal preference, it’s not that deep, go outside, touch grass, get married, work a hard job, have kids, stop thinking
so you’re saying I have to fuck people with [trait]? you’re going to show up at my apartment and force me to fuck strangers? your analysis of beauty standards is literally rape. OP wants to fuck me specifically, a random hostile stranger in their notes. they’re turned on because their body disgusts me! (no I have never seen them but I vividly imagine their body as disgusting because why else would they make a post like this)
did you know that another society/culture/time period had a different set of beauty standards? I bet OP didn’t even realize this
actually beauty standards are evolutionary instinct and you’re anti-science. you want us to ignore biology?
I actually WANT to fuck people with [currently devalued trait]
we should remind people that [currently devalued trait] was valued in a different society with another brutal hierarchy based on bodily ideals as proof that [currently devalued trait] is good actually. this definitely does not replicate the exact politics OP is challenging
once I met someone with a stigmatized bodily trait and they were a bad person. I’m sharing this anecdote absent any context so others can draw their own conclusions. if you go to my blog every single post is me sharing totally real stories of people with this trait doing mean things. I’m not saying certain bodily traits create inferior morals, I’m just compulsively curating an entire blog to imply it over and over and over
I used to think [stigmatized trait] was disgusting but I’m trying to unlearn it right now. I assume anyone with that trait would feel me saying this publicly is an act of kindness I’m bestowing upon them rather than a casual cruelty just like all the other comments about how disgusting the trait is

“Three Crow Girls Plot the Destruction of the World”
person typing into google search bar: obfuscate meaning
google ai overview: Understood! From now on, all meaning will be hidden from you, and you'll be forced to wade through the dreary vastness. Whether it's things you've always held dear, or new ideas you've yet to discover, nothing will make sense or appear to have any real value. This could be the beginning of a fascinating journey!
if policies like "be nice" and "don't do slavery" are going to be "the fall of western civilization" then why would anyone be against that outcome
fuuuuck if the Evil Empire Of Misery And Sadness gets defeated the dow jones is gonna PLUMMET duuude we canttttt think about the dowwww
In BtVS pride month episode the school hangs big rainbow 'everyone is welcome' poster, so now vampires can just walk inside. Now Buffy has to tear it down wihout Cordelia calling her homophobic
This world is so beautiful. People are shipping Ryan gosling and markiplier. Because they were both in space movies you see
Tumblr users love to do things like this. I DO NOT mean this in a mocking way to be completely clear. I think it's cute. It reminds me of back in the day when people shipped jack frost and elsa cause they both have ice powers.
Or like the superwholock thing. Tumblr users like to go "I like this thing AND that thing.. What if my FAVORITE CHARACTERS met each other? Would that be cool or WHAT!" And the thing is it's absolutely adorable
You can say it's cringe or bad or missing the point of the movie all you want but I don't care. Yeah man, I bet it would be really cute if there was a happy ending and the blood murder man (in space) got saved by the dorky science teacher (in space) and they had yaoi moments. I'm so glad you're having fun

A doll youtuber I watch has made a video about the history of Polly Pocket, and she's describing the plots of the dvd specials, one of which features an elderly woman named Ms. Throckmorton, and my reaction was
a lot of the DSM’s very clearly prejudiced diagnoses (e.g. hypoactive sexual desire disorder, gender dysphoria, transvestic disorder, etc.) try to skirt around the prejudice by saying “the disorder lies in the patient’s distress over being this way, not the behavior itself :)” like hmmm do you think their distress has anything to do with societal expectations around “normal” sexuality and gender? or is distress just this magic thing that exists in a vacuum with no outside influence
like keep in mind that homosexuality was in the DSM until pressure was put on the APA by gay rights activists, and they “removed” it in 1973 and replaced it with many different diagnostic labels over the years to describe “this person is gay and distressed over it so we’re treating the distress with conversion therapy. blease don’t think we’re homophobic.” it wasn’t until 2013 that distress over one’s own sexual orientation was removed entirely from the DSM. do what you will with this information and begin to wonder what psychiatry’s actual motives are for continuing to pathologize queerness and gender nonconformity.
My very first tiger drawing and my latest
Your skill level is unquestionable but listen.
I love him.
me also. as well.
This is the COOLEST thing I’ve seen in AGES. You both completely made my entire week.
when you go to a doctors office their favorite thing to do is tell you "okay check out at the front desk" when you're done. and the front desk tells you ummm you can just go! and you're like don't I have a copay? and they're like we don't know, we have to ask your insurance company first. and you're like well my insurance card says the copay is $30, can I just pay it right now while I'm standing in front of you? there's a card reader right there on the desk. and they're like nooo we have to send a representative on horseback during the next waning moon to meet with their claims adjusting associate director of benefits management and client services in the secret glade to negotiate. and you're like oh okay and go home. and you get twelve emails asking you to take a survey about your experience
AND THEN in eight months you start getting phone calls from unknown numbers and when you finally check your voicemail they're like Your Balance Is Past Due We're Going To Kill You (even though by this point you have forgotten that you ever went to the doctor). and so you go to your MyChart account and log in with your username and password and you have to reset your password for security reasons. and you get two emails that say Your Password Has Been Reset. Was This You? and you have to go find your phone and enter your two factor authentication code and then you have to select which location you visited and then you have to click through all the Reminder: Complete Your Health History Profile where they ask if you've had any new surgeries even though you definitely told the nurse about this at your visit and then you have to find the Pay Bills tab and your balance is $179.23 and you're like why is it so expensive I thought the copay was $30? and you download a PDF of the charges and find out that they charged a late fee of $15 a month even though that doesn't add up to $179.23 and you don't even remember being told you had any balance at any point and you could call a representative and ask about it but that would probably take at least half an hour and there's no way it would actually get rid of the charges. so you go pay it anyway and you have to go find a paper check to look up your bank account routing number because they'll charge you an extra 3% if you pay with a credit card and there's a fee of $2.75 for convenience also. and then you get three emails that say We've Received Your Payment! Thank You For Your Payment!
anyone else experiencing problems with GIFs not playing properly?
they'll play fine on blog view (example) the gifs will load and play for me there
but in dashboard view of the same gifset here it will load the gifs but then not play them unless i click then it plays when clicked on in lightbox view but still only in the lightbox view (the gif is still not playing in the background outside the lightbox) and it's still the case once i exit the lightbox view
are you experiencing this problem?
yes
no
not sure
(also it's not my browser or extensions causing this cause i tried different browsers and disabling all extensions and asked my brother who's on a different device and browser and he had the same problem but wondering if more people do too. i've also messaged tumblr support already so hopefully it'll be fixed soon.)
[ID in alt text]
got an email back from tumblr support staff quite quickly with the solution that worked for me:
"We recently made a change that will prevent GIFs from autoplaying if you have chosen to enable reduced motion/reduced animation settings on your device.
Here's where you can check those settings, depending on your device/operating system:
In Windows 10: Settings > Ease of Access > Display > Show animations in Windows.
In Windows 11: Settings > Accessibility > Visual Effects > Animation Effects.
In macOS: System Settings > Accessibility > Display > Reduce motion.
In iOS: Settings > Accessibility > Motion.
In Android 9+: Settings > Accessibility > Remove animations."

Hot take: there is no valid reason that official government ID should have either a sec or gender marker on it. First name, last name, dob + up to date image will suffice. Address, if relevant.
Y'all know it's crucial to paramedics, right?
Any of my followers who are paramedics/first responders/emergency room staff want to attest that no, it isn't.
What do you think happens in dire medical emergencies where an unconscious person presents and doesn't have ID on their person at the time?
I'm always confused by why people seem to think that there is some sort of Penis Emergency that will kill you if paramedics perform the Vagina Procedure on your fully clothed body.
Hospital spoilers btw: blood isn't sorted by sex, it's sorted by type. The sex of the blood donor doesn't factor in at all when receiving a transfusion, and you will not be harmed by receiving blood from a donor whose sex is different than yours. Saying this because it's another misconception that I've heard.
if you're unconscious at the hospital and they need to operate and insert a catheter in your urethra, don't worry! they'll figure out if you have a penis or a vagina without having to look at a laminated card in your wallet
And if you have ambiguous or surgically modified genitals, they'll find your urethra anyway!
I think this is one of those things where folks are so used to it that they just sort of assume there must be a good reason for it. But the only reason for your sex to be on your ID is if your legal rights differ based on your sex. Like, it would be important for your ID to say F or M if, for instance, one of those categories was allowed to open a bank account but the other one wasn't. But as far as I can tell, we have mostly decided that legal rights should pertain to everyone. Which means that sex documentation really is just a throwback to a time when women were not considered full legal persons and therefore their legal status had to be officially displayed on their ID in order to maintain that distinction.
Honestly, the only major thing I can think of that still strictly legally requires sex distinction is the military draft. Which, A) still doesn't require sex be recorded on your drivers license, B) could be made sex-neutral, or C) could be abolished instead.
Law enforcement would probably claim they need it, but honestly... if they get a report that a man committed a crime, and someone who looks like a woman gets pulled over, but her driver's license still says M... she would absolutely not fit the profile that was called in, which was of someone who looked like a man. LEOs would be better off not even knowing what the gender marker is; it's only likely to confuse them.
Paramedics probably should know if someone is pregnant. Famously, this is a temporary condition that is not carried on a driver's license, and the vast majority of women are not pregnant at any specific given moment, so simply knowing someone is a woman gives you no information whatsoever about her pregnancy status. The behavior "treat all women as if they might be pregnant" is actively deleterious to the health of non-pregnant women. It'd be better to have no gender marker, but have a pregnant person wear one of those wristbands, like people with any condition they absolutely need paramedics to know about.
I agree. There's no real justification for it anymore. It doesn't help. Either you can tell what sex a person is by looking at them, in which case it conveys no useful information, or you can't, in which case it's just as likely to provide contradictory or out of date information and besides, why do you need to know the gender of a person who you can't tell what gender they are? How is that even useful? If you're trying to catch a shoplifter you'd be better off knowing "person is of ambiguous gender" than knowing "shopper is a woman" when in fact you can't tell by looking at the shopper that they are a woman or not.
I think some of that info is to help confirm the ID belongs to the person presenting the ID
Right, but let's say the person is trans and has been on hormones for years but the gender marker is the AGAB. How would that help? "No, sir, you can't possibly be the person you say you are because your driver's license says F." "Yeah, I'm a trans man, I've been on T for ten years and I've had top surgery, but when I was born they thought I was a girl." "???" Mind. Blown.
Or worse. "Sir, you can't be this person, it says you're a woman." "I am a woman." "Nice try, but I can tell by your shaved head and your heavy upper musculature that you're a man." "I have literally given birth. I am a butch woman who bodybuilds. Fuck you."
The marker is actively antithetical to its purpose of making sure that the person presenting the ID is the correct person, if the person is perceived to be a gender they are not, or the marker hasn't been updated (or has been forced back to the AGAB by the Kansas government). Most GC men and women do not really look like each other. Even a woman named Chris with a feminine hairstyle probably looks different than a man named Chris with a masculine hairstyle who's trying to pretend to be her. So for GC people the gender marker's not needed; most GC people do not look like a member of the opposite sex, and therefore, their faces won't match a picture of the opposite sex. You don't need a marker for that. and GNC, the marker is more likely to create confusion than it is to clarify.
Also, just saying, my picture on my ID is so washed out, it could literally be anybody with a vaguely similar hair shape. If they actually cared about using ID to identify people, how about making sure the pictures are good, and are frequently updated? That'd be better than gender markers.
