I wondering about:

1. Where is a good source for traditional Inuvialuit names? And any information on how naming traditions work.

2. What would it be like to live in Inuvik? I know that it would be very cold in the winter and isolated. What would life be like as a teen girl specifically? And what is the terrain like, specifically trees and bodies of water?

3. What are the differences between different subgroups of the Inuvialuit group? Ex: The Sallirmuit people

4. What is fishing and hunting like up there?

5. Are there any rituals or traditions that would be good to include?

6. How do cultural traditions blend with modern technology?

any time someone is in any kind of crisis or upheaval, offer to feed them. tell them they don't have to choose what it is if they can't make decisions, just ask about allergies and preferences and tell them you're just gonna make food happen at their house.

friend having a baby? delivery gift certificate to order food to the hospital after the kid shows up.

someone's relative passes away? offer to make them dinner.

buddy gets laid off? ask if you can order them lunch.

pal stuck in a depressive episode? offer to drive them to fucking mcdonalds, if that's what they want.

people in crisis are tired and sad and angry and the last thing most of them are doing is thinking about feeding themselves. so if you have the ability or time or money, providing that is always, always a good move.

finally searched for a solution and there IS in fact a giant hand-curated list of sites containing this content. it can be imported to ublock origin on desktop or mobile, and even can be used on iOS via the ublacklist extension in the safari app. it's updated regularly, and importing via the link as described should allow those updates to go into effect automatically.

i've only tested it a little bit, but after importing the list and repeating my duckduckgo search for backpack recommendations, my top results now lead to websites that appear to be linked to actual organizations in some form, with an "about us" page and the name of a founder and everything. the text is still often a bit wordy and SEO-optimized, but it now has actual recommendations that are relevant to the query. BIG IF TRUE???

OK SO I haven't been super active on tumblr lately because I couldn't get into my account on destop until yesterday and my day job has been kicking my ass BUT I HAVE EXCITING NEWS. FOR YOU.

My YA Faerietale fantasy novel Runaways got nominated for two categories in the Indieverse Awards ("The Vibes are Right" and "Irreplaceable Sidekick". That would be Hannah's weasel animal companion - KitKat). Voting is going to take place in October, but right now, the event has organized a sale with a TON of the nominated titles. Including Runaways!

Between Today (June 14th) and Wednesday (June 17th), my paperback will be discounted to $12, my hardcover will be discounted to $15, and my ebooks will be discounted to $0.99 (everywhere but kindle). And you can shop all the other participating titles on the Indieverse site.

forgive me for doing a self promotion on tumblr, I know we all hate ads but 1) you get cheap books, 2) this is the first time my book has been on sale since it released so if you haven't bought it yet now is a really good time to do that, and 3) This is my debut novel and I got nominated for awards so this is kind of a big deal to me. Even if Runaways isn't your thing, the Indieverse awards is an event to promote Indies. None of us have publishers to help with admin or propping us up with marketing budgets. A book lives or dies based 100% on reviews and support from readers. If you can spot me a reblog, that make my day <3

label and date everything

dont use adhesives on important stuff they degrade really quickly and can damage things

some paper is much more acidic than others and will degrade and damage things touching it. newspaper and construction paper are the worst and will mess up other papers theyre next to

printed photographs have chemicals that can react really badly to temperatures and dampness and you should keep them separate from other materials

soft and thin plastics also degrade really quickly (unless theyre archival grade) and are the worst to deal with

keep a copy of digital files in at least one separate location (flash drive or hard drive)

some inks will fade over time or bleed onto whatever theyre on. archival ink is a thing but there are also just some inks that are more stable

rubber bands break within a few years, paper clips and staples will rust and damage the paper if theyre not made of the right material

exposing photos or any material with colors to light for a while will obviously degrade them over time and theres not much you can to do restore them at that point

you lowkey should print out digital correspondence or materials if you want to keep them long term and be able to find them regardless of what happens to that email domain, website etc. its not uncommon to have printed out email threads in archival collections

these seem to have been more common in the 70s-90s but those photo albums with thin plastic and slight adhesive pages are terrible and will damage your photos and make them stuck forever

this is what acidic paper does to anything its touching after a few decades so watch out

if you actually want to archive something that (possibly) relies on specific software to run, for example an interactive installation or some generative art program or even web-art or plug-ins made for a specific browser, you have to archive an entire (hardware) computer with the OS and the programs installed on the hard drive that can run it!

There is very little guarantee that you can get all the necessary drivers and old versions of the software running on new hardware even if you can still find the installers and files 20 years later. Almost nothing is made with backwards compatibility in mind.
