yes, that's functionally the same argument. however, when harry potter fans use it, they're defending the stories and popularity of something written by a billionaire who is alive, incredibly present online and in real-world politics, and who is trying to actively kill trans kids and who uses the platform she gets from harry potter still being in the public eye--through fanworks and official content--to try and, again, Kill Trans Kids. i think that's a lot worse than a pair of niche internet microcelebrities who already quit the internet and what they did to their direct circle of friends.

that's the difference between supporting "cancelled" creators online and supporting JKR. creators that have left online spaces can no longer continue to use their platform to harm others, no matter what fanworks people make, because people already know that they should not be trusted. JKR is actively using the platform she gets from fanworks to hunt down trans people and befriend fucking nazis, and any works that continue to promote her are actively encouraging the harm she spreads. harry potter-related works continue to uplift her when she's in a space that allows her to continue to grow and spew her hateful rhetoric, unlike marm and avid, who are done in the online space and will never get the chance to do something like this again no matter how many people write fics of them or draw their OCs.

they're obviously bad people, and i feel genuinely sick for their victims, but comparing still liking their characters to supporting jk rowling just isn't a one-to-one. me drawing their OCs isn't going to give them another chance to abuse people in real life.

i am, of course, disgusted by the real-life people behind these characters. i likely won't post any of what i continue to make publicly. however, i do not feel as though making fancontent of marm and avid, in any way, endorses them.

i separate character and content creator, and i will still be posting about avid's characters and past projects with fondness and appreciation. yes, the two are undeniably intertwined and influenced by one another, and i know that it's impossible to divorce the two entirely and that bits of cc!avid are in all of his characters. however, i will continue to engage with and write about and draw avid's characters. because that's what they are. characters. is it supporting abuse when i draw a character? no, it's not. i don't support avid's actions, nor do i give them any form of income or support, so i genuinely see no issue with continuing to like their characters. me drawing avid's OC doesn't support them, nor does me still finding comfort and intrigue in their characters, and as such i'm not going to stop loving vampires!avid or haunted winter!avid or both sbk!avids. i'm not going to let myself hate some of my favorite characters just because their author is a shitty person.

no but actually, tl;dr on avid marm hell situation: avid and marm have left content creation and the mcyt sphere as a whole because they were called out as being abusive and manipulative towards other members of sbk. we don't have that many details, but threats were made repeatedly and everything came to a culmination at twitchcon, where members of sbk were able to talk among one another and realized they were being lied to. basically all members of sbk have made some sort of announcement and callout post involving the two, which can be found somewhere. i dunno. i'm not gathering them. probably in the maintags somewhere.

as for my thoughts, because i'm sure people love hearing what *i* think: this is basically just wilbur soot situation a few years down the line, and i dont give a fuck if you still watch wilbur soot. do i like avid and marm as people? no. fuck them. will i stop posting about avid's content? nah. i don't believe that posting about and appreciating a character is the same as endorsing an abuser's actions, because it's not. i am going to continue to play with my dolls. i like avid's characters and i like their stories and i do not give a fuck that the real life person is bad, because we ALL know that c and cc are different. we settled this in 2020. however, i don't feel comfortable theming my entire blog around avid anymore, obviously, so now i'm girlpyro. which is also true and canon to those with eyes.
