mcyt fans NEED to learn that it is not normal for the creator of a media to be so enmeshed with the fandom
it is not healthy, and it's not safe, for both the creators and the audience members
"i think newer mcyt fans dont understand creators just interact with the fandom, that's just how it is" IT SHOULDN'T BE. the line between creator and fans should be CLEAR AND BORDERLINE IMPERMEABLE, because if not, that's how an unhealthy parasocial relationship is formed BOTH WAYS
the creators can appreciate the fan creations, they can interact with them in dedicated spaces like meet and greets, they can contact fans to showcase cool fanart in designated spaces (be it lives, and such) BUT THEY SHOULD NOT BE IN SPACES MEANT FOR FANS
not even because of boundaries or shipping or anything, there are people who do NOT want to be perceived, who do not want their headcanons or theories to be seen and talked about by the people making the official version of it. LITERALLY any person coming from other fandoms will tell you how fucking bizarre it is to go into mcyt spaces and see the ccs openling hanging around the fans' spaces giving their 2 cents of everything in there
mcyt ccs are chronically online and THEY need to learn that THEY are not supposed to be welcomed with open hands in all fanspaces
THEY need to learn to put a limit on what THEY look up about THEMSELVES online
because if THEY didnt feed the parasocialness of an audience of mostly children who look up to them, there would not be as much of a mess in these fandom spaces as there is today
this!! but also people saying mcyt has always been like this, no it hasn't. mcyt/mcrp was one of the first fandoms i ever participated in, and let me tell you, 8 or 10 years ago this would NOT happen. when i watched mcyt as a child, creators would interact with the fandom the way an actor would with fans of the media they are in. they would go to meet and greets and vidcon panels and occasionally like or reply to fanart on twitter. of course i don't know how it was in EVERY mcyt fandom at the time, but i do know that was the overall norm. lately there has been a certain parasocial aspect to the way some (emphasis on SOME) creators are interacting with fans that is uncomfortable and borderline concerning. not only is it important for fans to remember creators are not their friends, but also creators need to remember fans are not their friends too. we don't need to be crossing that line.
it's pretty ironic, because people will call those "breaking boundaries" or people who like us are criticizing situations like the one going on rn 'parasocial'. when like. they clearly dont understand what the word actually means? because they would know that the separation we ask for, and us seeing their characters as Characters and thus treating them as such is the furthest thing from parasocialism
and, in fact, people upholding said standards based on the word of the streamer alone are way more into a parasocial relationship with the streamer than any of us

This specific incident has already harmed people.
As someone with a partner, I wasn't even that bugged when I saw the original announcement on the discord server. I know damn well if my partner came to me about a fanbase shipping my characters that share both my name and appearance I'd try to find a way to comfort her
BUT IT WOULDN'T BE THREATENING MY AUDIENCE
First things first, shipping is something that comes with fame. If you make characters, people will want to play with them. If you're known within a space, shipping will happen. No matter how comfortable or uncomfortable you/people close to you are about it.
Second, setting a "boundary" and especially with the wording Pyro did, pushes the "actually, we don't want this to happen at all" which, and pardon me, is stupid. It's gonna keep happening, just because you wrote a message and made a stream saying "hey please don't do [thing]" doesn't mean people will stop doing it. They won't.
Third, the only way to enforce what was said is through harassment. I'm sorry, that's just the way things are, you don't place a bomb and act surprised when it blows up and kills someone and severely injures another 20~ people. It doesn't matter how much you try to say "please don't harass or hate on boundary breakers" they will. They will hunt them down for sport and sent hate, threats, and worse. This specific incident has already harmed people, and you can see many examples of it just by looking around enough.
Some kid out there is receiving death threats over this. Someone else is considering deleting their entire internet experience to shield from the overwhelming hatred. You're getting support but at the cost of the lives of people who built this goddamned place. Is this what you want for your community?
Fourth. Saying that (and I quote from the original announcement) "nothing that has already been created has to be hidden/deleted" doesn't do shit. Things that have already been created are being hidden/deleted. Not because the person who made them wants to or wants to support the boundaries, BUT BECAUSE OF SAFETY.
PEOPLE ARE GETTING HARASSED AND SENT THREATS AGAINST THEIR LIVES OVER CHARACTERS

If this somehow reaches Pyroscythe the content creator (which it likely won't) or any of the "boundary defenders": go ahead. Disagree with me. Threaten me. Tell me off. But this is the truth. I still think this can be taken back, and it would be the sensible thing to do before it gets even worse. I'm not against the ccātheir content is one of my only safe spaces left, but I can't and won't stand by this shit.
If you wish to, block me. But if you do that I want you to take that as advice for yourself and block whoever's content makes you uncomfortable instead of going/sending people after them.
I'm gonna be honest, if a Tumblr post mildly shitting on what you perceive as a flaw you have, has the capacity to make you give up on pursuing writing, then you're the type of artist who's going to be unwilling to improve or learn and will forever create bad art, which is still art, but not something I think even the people around you would lament on "missing out". The alternative is also you're the artist who will double down on said flaw just to "spite the critics", which if you also embody the average fandom tumblr-user, will probably result in the most tone deaf racist art imaginable. So also, not a big loss.
