If you're not familiar with the concept of AUs : It means we took Expedition 33 characters, and instead of having them in their canon universe, we're throwing them in the universe of Pacific Rim.
If you're not familiar with Pacific Rim, I am begging you to watch the movie. Believe me you won't regret it. Don't let the big robots fighting aliens fool you, it is SO MUCH MORE than that.
Can I read without seeing the movie it is based on?
I would HIGHLY recommend watching that masterpiece of a movie, but if you really just want to read ur yaoi without watchintg the movie first; here is what you need to know :
Kaijus (giant alien mosnters) start attacking Earth. They don't come from space: they emerge from a giant rift at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.
Humanity is losing the war. Nothing seems capable of stopping the Kaijus.
As a last resort, humans create a new kind of weapon: Jaegers, giant humanoid robots built specifically to fight Kaijus. Robots that have to be piloted by humans pilots inside of said robot.
The first pilots who try to control the Jaegers either die instantly from the mental strain or develop fatal brain damage after only a few tests.
Piloting a Jaeger is simply too much for one single human mind.
The solution: two pilots sharing control of the same Jaeger.
But that only works if the two pilots are perfectly synchronized. To achieve that synchronization, they must be exceptionally compatible so they can undergo the most important concept in Pacific Rim: the Drift.
The Drift is a neural link between both pilots. When they connect, they dive into each other's minds. They relive each other's memories, feel each other's emotions, and share thoughts the instant they appear.
THEY ARE LITERALLY INSIDE EACH OTHER'S HEADS. Now do you understand why Pacific Rim AUs are so GOOD?
Not everyone is Drift-compatible. You have to find the person whose mind is perfectly in sync with yours.
Aria takes a few liberties with the lore and how Jaeger technology works. Everything you'll read about the Painted Drift and Painted Technology is entirely Aria's original creation.
The Shatterdome is the militaty base they live in, the PPDC is the governemental organization who decides about the defense against Kaijus, and the Jaegers have funny names like Painted Cypher, Paintbrush, Crimson Typhoon, etc. All other words u may not know are basic military vocabulary or Aria's original creation.
Maybe reading the fic will actually motivate you to watch the movie ! (The 2013 one. The 2nd one doesn't exist. Nope.)
