Caleb had been in the shower for ages after cleaning the kitchen and heading upstairs. You don't realize how long it's been because you're on your phone watching relationship self-help videos. You never really followed half the information most "professional influencers" posted about relationships, but whenever you found something interesting you wanted to try or wanted to know your boyfriend's opinion on, you would send it to him. As the video blasted about a woman explaining the signs of a man cheating, Caleb steps out the bathroom in an ash-grey tee and a pair of sweatpants, dabbing his forehead with the towel around his shoulders as his dark brown hair drips from his shower.
"What's all that noise you're listenin' to?" he asks, briefly tilting his head to remove water from his ear.
You turn over on the bed to face him, sitting straight up and sliding off, jumping to your feet. "It's time for another couples test!" you suddenly spring on him, holding up a finger.
"Oh? Alright, then. Wish I had time to study, though," Caleb agrees, chuckling. He's used to your antics and trends you like to follow. Even if he doesn't always understand it, he always plays along.
"Test number 1: let me see your phone," you shout with a smirk.
Caleb shakes his head, pointing to the phone in your hand. "You already have it, pipsqueak."
"Hm?" You check the phone case and realize you do have Caleb's phone. Yours has a green apple case and his is red. "Oh, uh, well..."
He can't help but laugh as you seem bewildered. "Looks like we'll have to find yours again tomorrow. You probably left it in the kitchen."
"Never mind that," you grudgingly pout, knowing he's probably right. "Test number 2: where's your dog tags? You know, the ones I gave you that you said you'd NEVER take off? If you weren't a cheater, you wouldn't take off your things I give you," you playfully accuse.
This was the wrong question to ask Caleb. And because you gave an inch, he will now take a mile.
"Where's my dog tags? Easy. They're right here," he says before suddenly reaching for his shirt and pulling it over his head in one fluid motion.
When his shirt comes off, the glimmering steel of his tags resting against his pecs hits the light and the wind is knocked out of your lungs. You can't help but stare, noticing how smooth and glossy his skin is from the lotion he used after his shower. Your eyes trace his body, starting from his broad shoulders and stopping just at below the dip in his abs. Your face turns deep red and your eyes glaze as Caleb closes in, your eyes now level with his huge chest.
Caleb chuckles again, taking his thumb and wiping under your nose. "Don't get a nosebleed, pipsqueak. Now, do you wanna move on to the third test, or should we consider my test passed?"
Caleb wakes up bright and early every morning to workout. Not just because he's a colonel and needs to keep his strength up, but because he's simply like that. This was a routine he had been doing since his teen years (though you personally suspect he did it because he used to get bullied for being so tall and lanky). He usually exercised alone, but last week, you swore you could keep up and get up early to work out too. One week. Caleb gave you one week to back out, but you didn't. And now, today's the day it begins.
Caleb slowly creaks your door open with a grin, violet eyes searching in the dark for your sleeping form in bed. "Wakey, wakey, princess. Time to struggle and sweat," he teases, stepping inside the room when you don't move. He walks up to the side of your bed and gently taps your shoulder. "C'mon. Don't tell me someone stayed up all night and couldn't get any sleep."
You groan, finally stirring in the covers, but you don't look at him. You turn just enough to slide his hand off your shoulder. "Go away," you murmur, voice heavy with restless sleep.
Caleb is amused at first, assuming you're regretting your vow to exercise so early. "Aw, come on, pips. The first week is always the hardest, but we can start slow."
"Caleb, I'm not in the mood for that," you sort of snap, causing him to flinch just a millimeter.
When you hiss back at him, Caleb realizes you aren't just being difficult. The smirk on his lips is replaced with a softened look of concern. "I know that tone. You only act like a kitten backed into a corner when you're hurting. What's wrong?" Caleb reaches over before you get to reply and turns on the soft lamp to take a better look at you. Seeing you in the light, you look like you've fought a war. Your eyes are sunken and outlined with dark rings, and when he checks your temperature, your skin feels clammy. "Hey, are you feeling okay? You're not sick, are you?:
You sigh, knowing you can't hide anything from Caleb. "No," you reply in a short, snippy remark. "I'm just in pain."
Caleb's eyes drift over to your calender. Growing up, he would see a mysterious red mark on the calender once a month without any further context. As a boy, he thought you had a strange fascination of marking days you were angry, but as he grew up, he realized you weren't just marking the days you were moody and ready to fight everyone and then cry for a few hours. He remembers crystal clear the day Grandma Josephine had Caleb run errands with her and they stopped in the feminine hygiene section to do some shopping for you. From that day on, Caleb also paid attention to your cycles and your supplies as well, though he never liked to admit it. But whenever he noticed you were low on something, it would always mysteriously appear on your bed while you were at school or out with friends.
Caleb's eyes soften as he reaches for the covers, tucking you in tighter. "Don't worry, pips. I've gotcha. I'll go get your heating pad and some hot tea, and if you need anything else, just let me know."
You don't turn over to face Caleb, but your cheeks adopt a rosy tint, your skin growing warmer. You get lost in the pounding of your own heart that you don't even notice when Caleb leaves. But you turn over instinctively when you hear the teacup rattle against the saucer.
Caleb sets the cup down on the nightstand and takes the heating pad draped over his arm and places it against your abdomen with a touch that's feather-light. "There ya go. Nice and cozy. I know you have anxiety about swallowing pills, so I mixed the medicine in with your tea to make it easier. Don't worry, I made sure it's not bitter. Take a sip," he gently nudges, blowing the tea before lifting the cup to your lips. He notes the subtle sink into bed like a kitten loafing in her blanket. "Just right, huh," he chuckles, allowing you to take the cup from him.
"Your customer service is pretty good, but I'll give it four stars. You're missing something," you tease in a tired but content voice, beginning to feel a moment of comfort.
Caleb grins and raises a brow. "Oh? Allow me to fix it, then." Caleb leans in slowly and presses a kiss to your forehead. "How's that? Will you consider re-evaluating my services now?"
"Mmm, I suppose I can manage five stars," you mumble, turning your head with a flushed smile."
"Good, because they're only for you, and I can't have my only customer unsatisfied. Now rest. I'll go make you some breakfast."

The doorknob to the front door rattles in the dead of night, breaking the silence of the house. The door creaks open and a tall, sculpted shadow stretches across the floor like ink in the milky moonlight cast on the floor. The sound of boots thump across the hard wood floor, only pausing as he turns to close the door behind himself. With a definitive *click* the door locks. Caleb removes his hat and hangs it on the coat hanger, dropping his heavy bag down with a loud thud before ascending the staircase to his bedroom. When he reaches his room, the door is closed and all is silent. He's ready to climb in bed and crash from exhaustion, but just as he opens the door, all the heaviness from a grueling mission melts away because there in his bed, sleeping as peacefully as can be, is his favorite pipsqueak.
"Ah, pips. You fell asleep in my bed again. Now where am I supposed to sleep?" Caleb quietly chuckles to himself, unable to even act annoyed as he heads to the closet and returns a moment later in a dusty blue tee and sweat pants. "Guess I'll just take this side," he murmurs, climbing into bed and laying down behind you.
As Caleb pulls your back flush to his core, you quietly mumble and begin to stir. "Hm? What's happening?" you quietly murmur, eyes still closed.
Caleb strokes your hair with a soft smile, gazing down at you and kissing the top of your head. "Shh, shhh. Nothing. Everything is okay. Gege's home."
Remember to eat today. I noticed you hadn't really been touching your food lately, so I'm guessin' you're a little stressed out. It's okay. We can talk about it whenever you're ready. I went to the store last night on the way home. All your favorite snacks are in the cabinets—first shelf so you can reach 'em. I know things have been tough, but I know you. You're tougher. Plus, you've got me. I'll always be here to catch you whenever you fall, keep you warm in the cold, and give plenty of hugs when you cry. It'll only be a few more hours before we can meet again later tonight.
