In the files of Super Mario Sunshine, an unused soccer ball object can be found, which Mario can kick around, similar to how he can kick around durian fruit in the finished game. No other characters interact with the soccer ball except for Strollin’ Stus, who will go after it if it is near them, and be able to kick it around as well.

This suggests that at some point during development, Mario would have played a game of soccer against Strollin’ Stus.
