If you search the internet for explanations or interpretations of Venus, you’ll see mostly discussion on relationships and love, with some articles and posts about beauty and how you can use your Venus sign to become as beautiful as you can be. While these are certainly Venusian issues, we’re missing a whole other domain of the love goddess’s rule! Venus is much more than her most visible expressions. To fill in the blanks, we need to have a discussion on the heads and tails of the Venusian coin.

Taurus and Libra

One of the first things you learn in astrology, once you get past the very basic building blocks of signs, planets, and houses, is the concept of sign rulerships-—what they are, and how they function in a birth chart. We’re going to push the “functioning in a birth chart” part of sign rulerships aside for the moment (don’t worry, we’ll come back to it later) and focus for now on the what they are, in the context of Venus. If you’re already know the basic terms, stick with me; I’ll offer a refresher for those of us who aren’t as familiar and then move on to the theoretical discussion.

Venus rules two signs: Taurus and Libra. At first glance, the signs don’t seem to have much in common with each other, but they both seem to fit the archetype of Venus pretty well. Chances are, most people who are just starting out with astrology and in the beginning stages of making associations with each sign—or those of us whose understanding of Venus comes mostly from TikTok or magazine articles—will begin to notice that a lot of Libra-dominant people (especially with ASC, Venus, and chart ruler placements) have a certain kind of “aesthetic” or “conventional” kind of beauty to them, while Taurus-dominant people have more of a “classic” or “natural” kind of look to them.

These associations, while seemingly surface-level, actually speak to the fundamental qualities of the signs themselves and the archetypes they embody! There are two major points to be made here: one on element, and one on polarity.

Element

Sign elements are certainly one of the more well-known puzzle pieces that go into the archetype of a sign. Taurus and Libra are earth and air signs, respectively. We can see an extremely surface-level demonstration of the difference between these two energies (even when they share a ruling planet) in the kinds of styling advice people with planets in these two signs receive—search “taurus venus style” on TikTok and you’ll see lots of earth tones, rich but comfortable textures, simple but elegant silhouettes, and relatively simple patterns (if any at all). Search “libra venus style” and you’ll see brighter colors, more traditionally feminine silhouettes, and more “trendy” looks.

These differences in fashion advice are a pretty direct reflection of what’s going on under the surface. Earth sign energy is grounded, tangible, physical. A lot of people with heavy earth sign placements will inhabit their bodies pretty strongly. They’re based in, as the name suggests, the Earth—so it’s not surprising to see fashion recommendations err to the side of natural tones and more practical and comfortable styles. It’s not a “thinking” element; it’s a doing-because-it’s-the-natural-progression-of-things element (not a doing-in-a-spontaneous-way element—that’s fire!).

Air sign energy, on the flipside, is active and fast-moving—not slow and steady like earth. Air is tied to mental energy, which itself isn’t tied to much at all. Libra, then, is a more fast-moving, cognitively-based expression of the core Venusian value of beauty, seemingly diametrically opposed to Taurus’s slow-and-steady energy; there’s inherently some amount of mental activity happening in Libran expressions of beauty, such as art and personal style, that doesn’t seem to be present at all in Taurean expressions.

Polarity

If we take one step further from sign element, we get to sign polarity. These polarities are traditionally known as feminine and masculine, but many astrologers nowadays are making the shift to more inclusive language and instead using terms such as nocturnal and diurnal or yin and yang. For our purposes, I’ll be using yin and yang, because those terms are the ones that I feel best express what we’ll be talking about for this section.

You can further divide the four elements down into two groups by pairing earth with water and fire with air. This makes up our two new groups, the polarities: yin (or nocturnal, or feminine), which consists of the earth and water signs; and yang (or diurnal, or masculine), which consists of the fire and air signs. The main difference between groups is wrapped up in how they process and interact with energies. Taurus and Libra, being earth and water signs (respectively), fall on opposite ends of the spectrum. This won’t necessarily mean much to you unless you already understand the fundamental differences between pure yin and pure yang energies, so let me briefly explain.

Yin signs are receptive, passive, and introverted; they take energy in and incubate it within themselves. They concern themselves with the inner world, not the outer world. Yin signs aren’t expressing energy outwardly. Yang signs are assertive, extroverted, and active—they express energy from the inner world to the outer world. All people have a combination of yin and yang signs and qualities. It would be impossible for a purely yin or purely yang person to exist—if energy is never taken in (yin), it can never be expressed outwardly (yang), and if no energy is ever outwardly expressed (yang), there would be no energy for others to take within themselves (yin) and start the process over.

Taurus, being a yin sign, is first and foremost receptive. It takes in energy (put a pin in that word choice; it’ll be important later on). Libra, a yang sign, is active, and outwardly expresses its energy, rather than taking it in and incubating it.

There’s certainly more to say on this topic, but for our purposes, you can think of Libra as the side of Venus that rules over active expressions of beauty and Taurus as the side that rules over passive or naturally forming ones. Pure Libran beauty comes from cognition first, while pure Taurean beauty doesn’t involve cognition or even outward expression at all.

Libra and Outer Beauty

The Libra side of Venus is the one that more people are directly familiar with and likely work the most with, because it’s the side that’s most appealing to pop astrologers and the side most easily bent to accommodate and uphold conventional beauty standards. Like we determined in the previous section, Libra rules over active, fast-moving, and cognitive expressions of beauty—in other words, the production of beauty, which is what Hollywood beauty standards and the various beauty industries sprouted out of.

This may seem like I’m demonizing Libran ideals because of their relationship to conventional beauty standards, and that couldn’t be further from the truth. Rather, it’s the people at the top of the Hollywood and beauty industries that have taken the pure-of-heart basis of Libran expressions of Venus and twisted them into something dark. There’s nothing inherently evil about Libran expressions of beauty—the Libran archetype existed long, long, long before the industries that make money off of people’s insecurities did.

Libra is all active expressions of beauty. Relational love, which itself is an expression of beauty, if in a less obvious way than many of the others that Libra rules over, but also art—painting, drawing, filmmaking, acting, poetry, prose, music, dance, and anything and everything else between. The use of one’s own body as an art medium is an inherently neutral—and Libran—thing; it’s the Hollywood and beauty industries that have taken the creation of art and twisted it into something that has become so dangerous for so many people. It’s an industry problem, not a Libra problem.

So, to distill it into its key terms: Libra is the side of the Venusian coin concerned with relational love, art, and any and every active expression of beauty.

Taurus and Inner Beauty

Let’s go back a couple of sections to our discussion on Taurus as a yin sign—the part of this essay where I told you to put a pin in the idea of Taurus being a sign primarily concerned with taking in energy, because the word choice would be important. Well: we’re here. If you’ve been following along, you’ll probably already be able to pick up what I’ve been putting down. When else do you hear people typically use the phrase taking in in day-to-day life?

People hike to the top of mountains to take in the view. They watch masterfully done movies and sit there taking it all in. They watch ocean waves crash on the beach and they take it all in. These are only a few of innumerable examples, but they get the point across—when people describe something they find so beautiful that there’s nothing they can do but receive it, they say they’re taking it in. All of the examples I listed, you may have noticed, are tied to things that people often do to relax—they exercise, they get out in nature, they sit back and rewatch their favorite movies. They’re things that people find calming! They’re peaceful, they’re serene, and they speak to the cultivation of inner beauty—which brings us back to the domain of Venus we’ve been discussing this whole time.

Taurus, then, is concerned not with the yang, air, active expression of beauty, but the yin, earth, cultivation of inner beauty. It’s concerned with peace, tranquility, and serenity. It, in accordance with its earth sign nature, can’t be rushed. Inner beauty doesn’t come overnight. It takes time to be cultivated and to grow—especially so in the world we live in, where most people are stressed every day and don’t meet their nutrition, hydration, and sleep needs. You have to satisfy your physiological needs before you can feel safe, and you need to feel safe in order to feel peace and to be able to cultivate inner beauty!

In short, Taurus is the side of the Venusian coin that governs over peace, tranquility, regulation, and any and every other passive expression of inner beauty.

To tie this all together: Taurus is the side of the Venusian coin that takes in energy so that it may be cultivated as inner beauty, incubated, and eventually expressed outwardly by the Libran side of the coin. Both are equally important in a birth chart reading for learning what any person’s most fulfilling path towards creativity and expression of beauty may be. Too much Taurean energy and not enough Libran leads to overabundance of internal energy, sluggishness, and an overreliance on the things that keep you in your comfort zone, paired with a fear of expressing any of the beauty you’ve taken so much time cultivating inside. Too much Libran energy and not enough Taurean leads rapidly to burnout, anxiety, and skittishness—without a base of inner beauty to draw from in Libran expression, the fountain will rapidly dry out and leave you unattached from what gives you life.

And then you meet the Sea Emperor, and this corner of the ecosystem speaks. She is warm, and clear-minded, and understanding. And she says, "Others trapped me here because they were afraid. But if you listen to me, I will help you."

And you've fought tooth and claw to be here, against enormous odds, against the planet itself. And in fighting with it, you've utilized it. Taken its raw materials and formed them into assets to your survival. Stolen nutrients from fish and plant and filtered water straight from the sea. Metal is your instrument, glass your asset.

You've learned the patterns of the predators here. Ghost leviathans are territorial. Stalkers are more interested in scrap metal. Reapers hunt by echo. You know these creatures now, they are your neighbors. You are as alien as they are. If you could eat their meat, you'd give them the same courtesy they give you.

And you are scared, that will never change. But you've learned to listen. Fear does not dominate you. You're a part of this place now. A part of the ecosystem. You can hear it speak.

You gather enzymes and you hatch the young. You give an old being its final wish. You're cured.

You have not escaped unscathed. In listening, in utilizing, you've allowed yourself to become a part of it. Become a part of this beautiful, alien world that has allowed you to take from it as much as it takes from you. Helped it as it has helped you. It cured you. You cured it.

This planet is cursed.

Both are these huge eldritch beings that start talking in your head to get something they want.

But the blood eel wraps all of that up in lies and manipulations (pretending to be human too, guilt tripping over filament station, ect)

While the Emperor Leviathan is very upfront about it. From the very first time you hear her, you get to see some outline of what she is, simply asking what you are, when she reaches you for the first time. Never trying to force you to do what she wants, just offering a fair exchange.

And both of these beings have secret knowledge that some corporation desperately wants, and they refuse to give up, because they do not think said corporations deserve that knowledge.

But the Emperor Leviathan gives her knowledge freely the moment she knows her children will be free, while the blood eel gives no indication there's any way to prove you deserve to know.

And none of these differences matter to Simon, because he met the blood eel first, so there's not much the sea Emperor would be able to do, to convince him she's different. It'd probably be Simon's desperation to live, driving him to find a cure for the virus, that might allow him to see the sea Emperor in a different light from the Monster.
