i could never be mad about trapper not leaving a note (either from a writing or an in-universe character standpoint) bc hawkeye and trapper had already had their sincere, emotional goodbye in check-up, and there's no way that, with wayne's absence, a simple letter-reading would improve upon that in any way. it'd just be a repetition of what we, the viewers, already know, only this time without the actors being able to play off each other. and i think that works as sufficient justification for trapper in-universe too: they already know how they feel about each other, they already know how they feel about parting. they've been here before. there's no point in reiterating it in a less intimate/personal way. truly the only way to give each other (and the audience) a more impactful farewell would be to have trapper literally kiss hawkeye goodbye. and that's exactly what they did. who needs a fucking note.
