Helen Whitaker, England
" Sycamore Seed "
Glass , copper and brass
The Odyssey but retold as a low-stakes modern adventure of one guy out with his girlfriend leaving the bar with his buddies to do just one (1) simple thing real quick, it'll take like 15 minutes tops, he'll be right back, but then some bullshit happens and the trip keeps getting more complicated as more bullshit keeps happening while he just tries to get back to the bar because he promised his girlfriend that he'd get back and he knows that she's still there because she told him she'd wait there.
And by the time he finally gets back it's almost 3 am and the bar is about to close while she's sitting there stone cold sober, surrounded by 5 drunk guys unsuccessfully trying to convince her to give up on waiting for him and go home with one of them instead. And the guy shows up to proceed to beat the shit out of them before explaining himself to her like hey sorry bullshit kept happening, my phone fell into a storm drain and my wallet got stolen when I was trying to find someone who'd borrow me a phone so I could call and
His girlfriend had been fending off the 5 drunk guys for most of the evening by explaining that even if she was going to ditch her boyfriend, she can't possibly leave without finishing her beer, which she is keeping perpetually full via careful sleight of hand where she's just pouring it back and forth into and out of the pitcher.
However the drunk guys are also drinking, and eventually she can't afford to buy another pitcher for the table so she can't keep up the ever-full beer glass trick. At this point she has to resort to setting up the pool trick shot that she's never seen anyone but her boyfriend pull off, and says she'll leave with whoever manages the shot first.
That buys her another hour or so and then, finally, her boyfriend makes it back. He looks like shit, hair down and just a mess, he's wearing an entirely different jacket that he got from an alley, and barely recognizable—especially to 5 guys who've been drunk for hours now. He lurks for a minute, finds out what's going on, and proceeds to pull off the trick shot first try. Throws the jacket off, fixes his hair with a hair tie his girlfriend lends him, finally looks like himself again, and THEN beats the shit out of them with the pool cue.
yuh i was there, that's how it happened
at least now we know why he has yet to return when Britain is in peril
We need a flick where King Arthur wakes in modern Jamaica and is very confused.
I think that would be so much funny. He wakes up on a remote beach in Jamaica and he only speaks/understands Brythonic and Medieval Latin. Locals assume he was a tourist who fell from a cruise ship or received a head injury and floated away from a resort. The authorities cannot match his description to any missing persons reports and his fingerprints and DNA produce no hits on INTERPOL. They suspect he may be Welsh or French because the language he speaks resembles Welsh or Breton but France and the UK both state he is not a citizen of their country. Stateless and deeply confused, he is taken in by the community near the beach where he was found, being cared for by a number of local families and doing odd jobs. He slowly learns English and adjusts to the contemporary world, uncertain if his belief that he is the legendary King Arthur was formed by whatever traumatic event caused him to end up Jamaica or if he is actually King Arthur and Prydain is in eminent peril. Mysterious letters from Morgan begin to reaffirm his belief he is King Arthur. He must choose between staying in Jamaica and continuing the happy life he has made for himself or finding a way to get back to Britain without any documentation.
ancient king white boy stuns locals by ordering in perfect Jamaican Patois
He gets to Britain and everyone expects him to sound like a posh noble Englishman because that is the picture Malory painted but he prefers to speak Welsh and when he has to speak English, he speaks with a thick Jamaican accent.

The composition of the drawing is based on the structure of the tree. The basic idea is that Barbossa is the roots, the foundation, the foundation on which the crown, which is Elizabeth, is based and held.

Sometimes I think about how so much of what makes Murderbot who it is comes down to it being a rental SecUnit. When Leonide tells Arada in Network Effect that Company Units have a reputation for being dangerous, she's probably 100% correct. Because of their nature as plug-and-play security for anyone, they have to be designed to be far more versatile than the SecUnits a corporate like BE owns. Three has to be able to secure salvage operations and mining outposts and work with BE's systems and that's kind of it. BE might need its security to fend off hostile takeovers and workplace uprisings, but Murderbot has to be able to do all those things and planetary surveys with unknown hostile fauna, and asteroid mining belts, and whatever the next client might need it to do, and it has to be able to work with whatever other proprietary software the new clients have every single time. It's better at adapting to new situations than Three partly because it's older and more experienced, but also because that's a big part of its function.
And at the same time, Company SecUnits are treated much worse than Three by virtue of being rentals. Many--if not most--of Murderbot's clients didn't want to have any SecUnits, but were required to take them per Company rental agreements for other equipment. Even the ones who specifically did want SecUnits didn't have any investment in what happened to them. They were the equivalents of the U-haul you'd rent to move your couch across town. They just needed to do a job briefly and hopefully be in good enough shape to get their deposit back at the end, but if not, eh. No big deal. Murderbot has never had the same clients for very long, and it's never had to work with the same SecUnits for very long. Every contract changes. Nothing lasts.
No wonder MB loves fiction while Three loves nonfiction. Three has seen basically nothing about reality outside of its job and wants to know what's out there. MB has seen way too much reality and would like some breaks from that shit now, please.
Three head canon:
Three of course doesn’t like what Barish Estranza did to it, its fellow SecUnits and to indentured humans and it recognizes that BE has bad values.
But I imagine it to still really stick to all other B-E standards, protocols and classification systems. It constantly is telling MB to do this and that about maintenance for arm guns etc because it’s the B-E standard protocol. And it still uses the B-E classification scale to rate all sorts of situations.
It’s like MB having all this bias that the company installed in it about rogues and the danger of SecUnits in general and so on. Just for B-E (who canonically care a lot about upholding their brand) they installed in their employees and SecUnits the belief that B-E standards and protocols are superior over everything else.
I see Three arguing with MB why the B-E standard cycle length actually is the best across systems and so on.
Maybe this makes MB finally challenge and second guess some of the beliefs and biases it still holds onto because the company made it believe their propaganda.

JttW ch 5
(and bonus essay in defense of SWK being a villain because I know you all wanted that today)
Okay, no, the Queen Mother of the West never actually got the chance to give Sun Wukong a kick in the head, but she was just about the only god in the Heavens who didn't try! It would have been an epic fight: Xiwangmu is NOT to be messed with.
As it stands, it was great fun watching Wukong cheerfully wipe the floor with the entire Chinese pantheon. Like, he absolutely screwed the pooch in Heaven, but I'm still cheering for him. Yessss, take on General Li AND Nezha AND the Four Great Devarajas at once, amazing, GET 'EM, MONKEY! Rah-rah-rah!
I did find it interesting how many of the gods who were sent after him were the same as those listed among his friends at the beginning of the chapter. Further related points of interest:
-he stops visiting said celestial friends once he's distracted by peaches.
-he's been told before about the time difference but when his friends on Mt Huaguo cry, "Great Sage! You left us for so long, and did not even once visit us to see how we were doing," he laughs: "It's not that long!" (Even without the time difference, it had been half a year for him).
-referring to the 72 demon tribes who are his allies, he says, "All of you are, related or not, people from home!" indicating a familial connection. Days later, returning in triumph from an epic duel, his commanders sob about said allies having been captured. Monkey replies, "Those chieftains who have been captured are tigers and leopards, wolves and insects, badgers and foxes, and the like. Not a single member of our own kind has been hurt. Why then should we be disconsolate?"
I think that Monkey's increasing self-absorption is on full display here. When he first got back to Mt Huaguo, everything he did was for the safety and benefit of his people, and he valued at least six of his allied kings highly enough to swear brotherhood with them. Now... 😬 He's losing people both figuratively and literally, but he's too caught up in his own spectacular upward trajectory to care.
On a related note, I think it's fascinating how many, many, MANY adaptations portray Wukong's defiance of the Heavens as something brave and revolutionary and noble, like he was some lone hero standing up against Corrupt Authority. Because it's so human of us: We want the guy who can solo Heaven's armies to be the hero. He's so cool. We as humans have a real worrying instinct to blindly admire powerful people (especially if they're funny and charismatic, like Monkey is).
But Sun Wukong is not the brave persecuted hero. This is his VILLAIN arc. He was perfectly happy to be part of the Heavenly bureaucracy! But he was arrogant and entitled and didn't want to work his way up the ranks the usual way. (The Jade Emperor, for instance, spent a thousand-plus world cycles--each lasting 4.32 billion years--learning wisdom and doing good deeds in order to qualify for his rank. He says in chapter four, "All appointed officials advance from lowly positions to exalted ones. Why should [Monkey] object to that arrangement?"). But Monkey knew he could have any title he wanted by using violence. He's a bully. That the people he's bullying are kind of annoying bureaucrats doesn't change that.
And then in this chapter he tops off being a bully by being a glutton, a liar, a drunkard, a thief, and an asshole.
And that's the point. He's the Mind. He's capable of anything. So when he goes bad, he goes really bad. I think that's incredibly important to his character, and makes his eventual redemption arc that much more meaningful and impressive.
I adore this character so much, but a good part of my love is based on how huge his range is. That someone who is capable of being The Absolute Worst is also capable of fully conquering himself and becoming enlightened is profoundly inspiring to me.
So, yeah. Let Sun Wukong be The Absolute Worst! Do not sanitize his motives! He was a petty violent impulsive entitled ass, and I love that for him!
...And, because I'm human, I also love that I get to watch him absolutely body those snobby Celestials before he embarks on his redemption arc.
Thanks again to @journeythroughjourneytothewest for hosting this reading group! Chibi translations:
Wukong to peach fairy: "Where did this peach thief come from?"
Queen Mother to Wukong: "You are such a fool..."
Fairy: "Your highness, forget it, forget it..."

I just saw a video title on YouTube that said something like “Why is glass transparent?” And that’s an interesting question and I’m sure it’s great that the video exists but my first thought was like “Because glass is terrible, obviously.” Because it’s unwieldy and let’s out warmth and needs to be heated to hundreds of degrees to be shaped and turns into hundreds of tiny daggers if you drop it. Why the hell would we bother with that if it didn’t have some magical quality like being totally transparent despite being solid? Glass is transparent because if it weren’t, we’d use something else.
looking through my “me” tag and this is apparently what I was thinking 3 years ago
If you’re still curious we did not start working glass for its transparency. It was most likely started as a sanitary concern. Glass is easy to clean with soap and water, once it’s cleaned out you can use it again for anything and no germs or flavor from the previous meal or drink will remain.
Other materials at the time, namely clay, would absorb flavors and germs meaning that if you ate beef off a clay plate your next meal with that plate could have beef flavor and microbes common on cow meat on it. That would leak out seemingly at random no less. Heck imagine a sick person coughing into their soup bowl and then months later their germs hiding in the clay would pop out to infect whole new people.
Also the earliest human use of glass we know of is for its sharpness. Pre-historic people would use volcanic glass as sharp knives for food preparation. Also beads. Pretty much any new substance humans get their hands on for most of our history we immediately try to make into beads.
The fact that it could become see through was a side benefit.
this is amazing and I’m really glad I reblogged that old bullshit post because I got to learn this

headcanon that a ferengi tradition is putting your new baby up for sale at a ridiculous price to show how valuable they are to you (everyone has to be polite and not actually buy them or hands will be thrown, people will be sued, etc etc)
I love the idea of Ferengi traditions that are both ha-ha capitalism but also create a functioning culture that’s more than a metaphor.
So, this is related to a headcanon I have. There's a kind of ritual sale of childhood goods as part of the Ferengi coming-of-age, which was featured in an episode of DS9. The ostensible purpose is to raise capital for the young Ferengi male. But, like, if the Ferengi were approaching this in their usual capitalistic mindset, you wouldn't really get much from what's basically a glorified garage sale
My headcanon is that it is the accepted practice to buy those goods at much higher prices than you would normally pay, serving as a culturally acceptable way of effectively giving financial support
Oh I love these, especially because of the spoken and unspoken meta-traditions around the tradition! Maybe they work similarly to the “speak now or forever hold your peace” thing in human marriage ceremonies. Everyone at a human wedding understands you’re not actually supposed to say anything at that point, it’s just a formality—but you see characters do it all the time in literature and entertainment, because it makes for such a juicy plot twist.
I bet “newborn gets purchased by evil jealous ex-business partner” is a classic plot hook in Ferengi soap operas. It’s their version of getting sold to One Direction.
i don't think "secunit neutral" actually means anything tbh
