Blackjack Rule
Alright this is dumb and stupid, but if youāre playing a more serious game of D&D you might not want a 6 Str Wizard being able to shift a boulder with a natural 20, BUT you do like the idea of a Nat 20 being an auto success. Lemme tell you about: THE BLACKJACK RULE
Essentially, itās no longer a natural 20 that is an auto-success, itās now a modified 21. Thatās it really. Itās just so you have to have a positive modifier in something to get an auto-success. It also means that your level 12 bardās roll of a 8 on persuasion might end up a surprise success on seducing your pesky BBEG.Ā Ā

How a society handles crime can say a lot about itās culture. Consider the following when you are developing your setting:
What crimes are punished the most severely?
Are people presumed guilty or innocent?
Who decides the outcome of trials?
Does the law apply to everyone or are some (such as royalty) above it?
Does the death penalty exist? If so, how are people killed?
How harsh are punishments in general?
Are certain groups punished more harshly or leniently than others (e.g. the rich getting lighter punishments)?
Are people debating whether certain things (e.g. recreational drugs) should be legal?
What kinds of accusations can have a long term impact on someoneās reputation even if they are ultimately found innocent?
Do prisons prioritize punishment or rehabilitation?
How humane are the conditions in prisons? If they arenāt very good, does this bother the general populace?
Once released from prison, how hard is it for people to return to their old lives? How hard is it for them to get new jobs?
Are certain groups seen as more likely to commit crimes?
What is the most commonly committed crime?
What laws exist but are rarely enforced for one reason or another?
Does the society have any especially strange/unique laws that would surprise an outsider?
What behaviors used to be crimes but arenāt anymore? Are they still frowned upon to a degree?
Great questions, hereās some more.
Who makes the law in the first place? Can it be amended, and how?
Where does the law apply? To the entire sovereign state, or are there multiple, maybe conflicting jurisdictions?
Is the law secular, religious, or a bit of both? Do these conflict at all? What happens then?
How is the outcome of trials decided? Is trial by combat (or similar) a thing? Is it supposed to be evidence-based? What sort of witnesses are considered reliable?
Do they interpret the law on a case by case basis, or take legal precedents into account? How do they keep track of legal precedents?
Are you sure there are prisons, i.e. is imprisonment an actual sentence? Thatās a relatively recent development.
Are there lawyers around? Whatās their purpose? Are they orators who write speeches for their clients? Are they experts of the law, perhaps because the law isnāt understood by common people? Do people have a right to a lawyer?
If the law treats repeat offenders differently, does it keep track of them, and how? Branding? Magic?
More importantly, WHY are things (actions, words, behaviours, opinions) considered crimes? Whose interests do they really threaten, and why did people start committing them?
That rabbit/hare post is messing me up. Iād thought they were synonyms. Their development and social behavior are all different. They canāt even interbreed. They donāt have the same number of chromosomes. Dogs, wolves, jackals, and coyotes can mate with each other and have fertile offspring but rabbits and hares cant even make infertile ones bc they just die in the womb. Wack.
These

and thatās why morphology-based phylogeny has Issues
@aviculor
The problem is perspective. People always think dogs are the āstandardā animal, the metric to use for whether or not two organisms ālook likeā theyāre related. When in fact theyāre a massive outlier due to the fact that we fucked up this lineage of wolf beyond recognition with selective breeding. Itās why people always sayĀ ābreedā when they mean āspeciesā, especially when talking about groups like lizards which canāt even be defined cladistically since some of them are closer to snakes than each other. To say nothing of fish.
I once read an article that emphasized there is no such thing as a fish. Sharks and rays, lamprey, lobe-finned fish like lungfish and coelacanth, bichir and sturgeon, and of course the multiple infraclasses of moreĀ āmodernā fish groups are all only very distantly related to one another. Theyāve maintained semi-similar body structures only because there are limited ways to efficiently move through water as a vertebrate.Ā
This
And this
Are more distantly related from one another than you and I are from a lungfish
Which is absolutely fuckin wild.
Not only that, but all of us air-breathing land vertebrates, all the lizards and chickens and people and frogs, are closer to one another than those three āfishā are to one another as well.
these
are genetically closer than these

these

these

COOL.Ā
Here are⦠all my Dungeons and Dragons characters.
Oh dear. I have a lot of them in advance. Creating new DnD characters is my addiction. I really hope one day Iāll be able to play as most of them (as of now, I only used Prospero the human bard, Jonas the orc-elf wizard and Portobello the myconid druid). For my eventual next game, Iām hesitating between Kas the satyr monk and Belzes the triton warlock. Which one should I pick?
sorry what
That header photo doesnāt do the dragon justice. (For shame!). Hereās NASAās own photo:

Hi! Iām Uninspired Fantasy Writer, and hereās my list of races!
Elves who are all blonde-haired and blue-eyed and unquestionably superior to everyone
Shifty Traders from the Desert with a weird accent
Huge, inherently threatening green-or-black orcs (who are also the only race with dreadlocks but nevermind that)Ā
Incredibly greedy and money-obsessed Dwarves who lost their Homeland or otherwise have large numbers of their race in diasporaĀ
Humans, but all based on Romanticized depictions of European cultures
and my favourite: The Matriarchy thatās pure fucking evil and full of backstabbing!
This tea as so much depth of flavor. I love it.
The four weapons of apocalypse.
X-Men in the MCU
The problem Iāve always had with the MCU is that they are too loyal to the comics. I know people might like this, and the films are still great, but I want them to do something that is new.
With Dark Phoenix and Endgame just around the corner, I had an idea that could be interesting.
Where the X-Men were once an allegory for the Civil Rights movement in 50s and 60s America, and Bryan Singerās films made mutants a metaphor for LGBT struggles. In this new version, change the dynamic so it more closely resembles an allegory for asylum seekers, refugees and immigrants.
Have the mutant characters be from a similar, but parallel world. Brought by a powerful entity (perhaps Dark Phoenix) and incapable of returning. They have no choice to make their home in the world of the MCU and the people of that world would either welcome them for their differences or shun them for their potential for danger. I think it would be an interesting idea and a way to introduce a new unfamiliar version of the X-Men that modern audiences could relate to!
