SWORDTEMBER DAY 23: MOSS

The Frog Queen’s Fountain, of mossy stone and forgotten empire 🐸🪷 In crumbling wells and overgrown brickwork, the ruins of the frog kingdom litter the lakes and ponds of the Unclaimed Wilds. Huge lilypads grow amok, their caretakers nowhere to be seen, vines and petals floating downstream, gently making their way to the sea. Flooded spiral staircases, slick with algae, lead to old nursery chambers beneath the wetland where ornately carved cisterns sit empty of spawn or polliwog. To those few who can make the journey, and swim to the deepest part of the darkest lake, the grand palace is still lit by bioluminescent lamp larvae. The queen’s throne sits empty, watching the sunken realm from a great atrium window, where merchants would swim and guards would patrol. The window is webbed with rock weed and scum, the once pristine glass fogged grassy and grey. Dark black stone flecked with bright green, in the great hall all you can hear is the gentle sound of water, somewhere in the distance.
