Like Dark Souls 2 has a really cool story and such a beautifully moody atmosphere that are all good enough on their own, but the fact that the game is also not very good somehow elevates those things more than it should. Does that make sense?

Friction is good! Rough edges are good! I like when the game's specific flaws reveal the humanity behind the creation! When something is too polished and seamless it flattens out the voice of whoever made it! Let your game suck a little bit please!

Mina The Hollower looks like a pretty typical retro nostalgia project at first blush but the more you get into it, you realize how considered and skillful it is at imagining what a soulslike game would be like on the hardware of the time. You've got monochromatic character palates like on the Gameboy color. You've got an actual manual to read and learn not just useful tips, but also background details about wherever you might be in the world. Finicky platforming challenges. Unreasonably good pixel art. Terrible and annoying flying enemies. A soundtrack you can throw ass to. This game's got everything guys
