Theory time! The Minamotos are half supernaturals.
Minamotos are inclined to like supernaturals despite being tasked to eliminate them for generation after generation. Tiara got attached to a Mokke, Kou is empathetic to half of the supernaturals he met, and even Yorimitsu, who told us there was something wrong with his emotional attachment, took a liking to Hakubo: He stayed with the demon on his death bed, no humans in sight.
Usually that wouldn't mean much but oddities keep piling up.
The Minamotos have fangs, that's not something any other human character have. No matter how dramatic the manga can get, a living human does not get fangs.
Yorimitsu, the oldest Minamoto we have seen, had the biggest fangs of them all, comparable to Hakubo's and Yako: A demon and a fox spirit.
Minamotos are closer to the Far Shore than normal people after all. Not because 'they are born doomed' but because they have a mysterious sixth sense.
This sixth sense doesn't only makes them able to see supernaturals it gives them resistence to their influence. Even a supernatural as powerful as Mirai had trouble messing with Kou, who is not a trained exorcist.
We are told spiritual power is what give them this resistence but no other human have this: The Nagisa family, the Kannagis, they all have more spiritual energy than a normal person, and while that gives them the capacity to see supernaturals and use spiritual weapons, we get no sign anyone besides other supernaturals have resistence to a supernatural's influence.
Speaking of spiritual weapons:
It is heavily implied this lightning cannot hurt humans.
We never see a person be hurt by a spiritual weapons, even someone as unexperienced to exorcism tools as Aoi and Nene were able to use lightnings without hurting themselves.
There is no control to Nene's attack here, she probably wasn't even planning on using an attack, yet she wasn't bruised, there are no signs using that hurt her at all.
Meanwhile Kou zapped himself. The 'demon vanquishing' energy that his staff creates can hurts him if it hits him.
So it seems Minamotos are resistent because they have both high spiritual energy and some supernatural energy: The two powers that give other supernaturals trouble combined.
Notice how Kako say 'supernatural' as if any supernatural will have resistence to his power but spiritual energy needs to be 'excessivelly high' to count?
Teru can open a gate between boundaries with a few drops of his blood, no tools needed.
The closest we have seen to this sort of power was with Yako, who is a fox spirit born in a shrine, a mix of spiritual and supernatural power.
People may say Teru and Kou needing to eat a demon hand to reach the Far Shore train means they can't have supernatural ties but even full supernaturals have trouble crossing boundaries during a severance.
What this moment implies is "Trying to be closer to supernaturals is something people have been trying to do for a long time"
And I have reason to believe the Minamotos had far deeper supernatural ties in the old days.
Yorimitsu was able to form a contract with a demon.
A contract have always been a supernaturals tool to take advantages of humans, we see it with kako, the mermaid, tsukasa, hanako... So a Minamoto being able to do that th without needing to offer anything in return (akane got the watch, nene had her mermaid curse halfed by hanako eating a scale) is wild.
It makes sense though, Minamotos are less supernaturals then they once were: their fangs are shorter and despite still having a lot of powers and staying sharp with constant work, Hakubo calls them weak sauce compared to the Minamotos he knew while he was alive:
BONUS: There are some implications that Teru is affected by rumors.
This part is less airtight but hear me out.
Teru's introdution was not as his main role of exorcist, but as the prettiest boy in school, the well known school prince!
His popularity is off the chart, he is treated as an idol! A pavillion was build for him, this pavillion is the most popular attraction of the festival, check out the line!
People bow down at his presence in valentine's day! He is the god of valentine's day!! Everybody loves him!!
Yet the second he is off school no one cares. We see zero admires, zero fans stopping him on his way to work, zero people commenting on how handsome he is. He is at most 'a pretty boy' the same level as natsuhiko when he is out, he is not an idol.
This becomes obvious when we compare him to Aoi.
Aoi had 'fans' since she was a little kid, people have always noticed her beauty, to the point Akane had to build a habit of stalking her to make sure no one harrassed her.
Meanwhile, Teru was isolated. He couldn't spend much time with people, but is not like people looked at him anyways. Teru is the only one interested in his classmates, watching them have fun when he reflects on his isolation.
But Aoi is always in the spotlight, even at her most isolated people will stares at 'the beauty queen' and whisper about her, something they had done all her life. She can't catch a break.
There are no hints Teru used to have this attention as a child, and even as a teen, he loses it when he steps outside of school. His rumors of being the school prince is no longer applicable. Only Aoi's beauty keeps being treated as abnormal:
Killua truly is the character of all time. He spend millions on chocolate. He is immune to poison. The front gate of his house is a tourist spot . He is an overthinker prone to anxiety. He has a kill count high enough to call a mass murder an 'amateur'. He has infinite money. He has no goals. He likes gambling and is a great liar. When he walks, he makes no sound. He cried in secret about the possibility of losing his best friend at least three times. He fights barehands and when he couldn't use his hands he casually revealed he has two 50kg yo-yo in his pockets. His abusive family used life long gaslighting and magical mind manipulation to convince him that he would kill his best friend and he proceeded to fall in love with said friend and break out of his family influence from sheer devotion. He needs to electrocute himself to power up. He loves his op ostricized trans little sister. He changes clothes all the time. He is extremelly powerful and smart and he knows it. He is a sore loser. If he has no use to his loved ones he feels worthless. He is a middle child. He loves so deeply it hurts him. He is soooo rude. He is so sweet. He sees himself as an equal to his bestie while simultaneusly worshiping him. He nearly dies in a dart game. He is 12 years old.
part of me is like 'man i should draw something for deltarune it's been consuming me i love this game <3' but the fandom is so big i can just scrowl the tag for hours when I am in the mood. I don't have to feed myself at all.

We are told Aoi is special, hence why Teru worked hard to get her back even at the cost of breaking the severance and working again, but the reason Akane didn't assume Aoi was special, claiming Teru would save 'anyone', is because he is also special to Teru, he just doesn't know it.
Teru came to rescue Akane during the Grim Reaper arc. Akane said "you come all the way here to rescue me and Aoi" but Teru wasn't aware Aoi was there too, he went to that low boundary because of Akane's glasses:His target was Akane.
The interesting thing here is that Teru admits he made Akane a priority over the entire school.
In the panel where he is explaining his duties as an exorcist, there is a trail of supernatural bodies behind him:
The school is swarming with supernaturals, he said so himself, and these supernaturals are not the friendly kind! We saw them attack Nene and Akane in chapter 60, itching to eat people:
And we know these supernaturals are spawning from the ground. Is an infestation.
Teru also seem to knows that, because even if he made sure to exorcise every last monster before going to search for Akane (which could be true but i personally find it unlikely: He talks as if he switched gears the instant he saw Akane's glasses and realize he is in trouble), he does not act surprised to still see a supernatural roaming the school when they are back.
His job is exorcism, he knew the school would be filled with dangerous supernaturals for a while, yet he still abandoned his duties after seeing Akane's glasses: He prioritized helping Akane over guaranting the whole school stays safe.
Since Teru contradict himself in the very next panel, this confession is the most dismissed scene in the manga, but I do think there is value in taking a closer look:
Most people assume Teru is only claiming to like her to annoy Akane, but that doesn't make any sense, unlike popular belief Teru does not like to mention Aoi to annoy Akane, he does it to get his attention.
When Teru want Akane's attention he is very gay about it, he want his full and complete attention, always up and personal with Akane to mock him or reprimand him. Bro why are you so close when you talk to him? Do you need to on top of him to brag about your score? Why are you tugging at his tie with your leg between his legs?? None of that is nescesary??
But in this "I love Akane-san" moment Teru shows none of that desire for Akane's attention, by the time Teru say he is joking his back is turned. Why even say he is joking in the first place? It would be much more affective to smirk and not say anything if tauting was the goal. Teru knows that too! He is smart, that's why he did something like this before:
During his confession Teru is dodging the conversation. He never planned to confess in the first place, he literally walk out of the room right after his confession.
So what, do I think he is being real? That he does like Aoi? Yeah, that's what I believe.
The pose he is in when he confess is the exact same 'hand barely touches face and have trouble maintaining eye contact' pose he had in chapter 1, when it was first revealed he had a crush on 'someone' in the first place.
And when he say he is just joking, not only is the panel for that waay smaller than the one used for his confession (so aidairo deemed as less important), he also looks to the side and laughs awkwardly in the exact same way he did during mokke of the dead: A chapter where Teru was he one who brought an infected mokke to school and when confronted about how weird th mokke infection was he refused to say it was his fault, lying about it.
So he was lying in his confession chapter too: Not about the confession itself, about it being a joke.
The context of why we got a confession in the first place only further proves this because it wasn't a random "nice day today, btw i love Aoi" confession, it was an answer to Akane's question of "Why are you helping us?"
His answer? "because i love Aoi"
which is an important answer actually. I go over all the HEAVY implications Teru would not have been part of this rescue mission if Aoi wasn't the one in danger Here.
In hindsight it is no wonder Akane (person Teru is not normal about) teasing him with Aoi (another person he isn't normal about) makes him react like this:

Hello mari-lair-san! I've been a big fan of yours from last year, it could've been a short time, but due to a lot happening to me, I was caught up in tbhk and fictional stuff, when I first saw your analysis about Teru's behaviour towards his fans, I was fascinated by it.
It was one of the analysis that re-read for about countless times that I can't even remember! I wrote OC x Teru that time, but I lost hope quickly because of the amount of readers and comments that was emptier than my stomatch right now, but seeing your analysis always made me want to improve and become better in writing, I started writing my OC to challenge his flaws, and even to the point I once threw away a whole doc filled by around 11000 due to my wish to have an OC that could make a character development for Teru instead of having a character development that's just centered in herself.
People say I am dedicated, but one of the reasons this happened is also because of your analysis. And your choice to post it on tumblr. Thank you so much for analyzing and writing, thank you so much for being one of the small parts in my complicated life that also became one of the reasons why my way to view people changed mari-san, it was such a surprise how I stumbled into your blog and many things changed due to that too.

That's insane, that's so cool! I did not expect my analysis on Teru to have such a big impact on someone,. Out of every analysis i've done, i'm glad the one showing his kindness to his fans, and people in general, is the one that touched you: This is such an important detail of his character to me.
The lack of comments is a mood, i consider myself pretty successful in the tbhkwriting space all things considered and compared to all other fandoms I've been to, the tbhk have basically no commenters. I'm serious when I say we gotta give Temmie Chang half the credit for Making Undertale (and Deltarune)
She's got an animation degree, I know the art in Undertale gets underappreciated sometimes because it's trying to evoke an older simpler style, but the art in Undertale is legit amazing and without Temmie, none of Toby's ideas would have been able to be realized (without finding some other artist and animator)
She deserves more flowers for being the one who made the vast majority of the art assets for an entire game that is one of the most commonly cited games as an influence on others (her style is so beloved and recognizeable, there's a fully complete Undertale fangame emulating it)
