I have a post cooking in my brain that's like "early RWBY is both better and worse than you think it is, you just haven't watched it with intent since you were a teenager." but I'm not like totally sure about how to word it without sounding like an asshole.
because like, don't get me wrong, early RWBY (1-3) is a mess! the animation is mid at best and distractingly bad at worst, the voice acting is very much everyone's first rodeo, and the saturation of the colors is so atrocious as to burn your retinas.
but there's something there! there's something about how team rwby are the ones to pick the white knight pieces to become a team and how that (if you're reading thru an Alice in wonderland lense) means they're a blundering but well-meaning protector. there's something about how mercury and emerald are abused children who are protecting each other the best way they know how. there's something about the compelling argument about personhood and the self that Penny represents. there's something about the (somewhat clumsy) metaphor that the faunus represent. like there's something there!! it's just buried under an over-complicated plot and volume 1 has a runtime of less than 2 hours to do foundational worldbuilding and volume 3 is a tournament arc with no stakes at all
but there's something there! under all the mess. there's something there. and I think only acknowledging the mess and never talking about the fact that there is some really good and compelling shit there if you care to look for it
