I need to talk about The Tarot Sequence more because that series truly took over my brain for the past few years and it's only getting better with age. You meet your protagonist as he's trying not to act too out of place at a fancy part he's minutes away from crashing - *literally*- as part of a job for his mentor. Debating on if its bad manners to toss shrimp tails into potted plants as if he's not minutes away from burning the place to the ground with his magical fire saber, gutting a few creeps and ruining his best friend's borrowed tux in the process - while said best friend lovingly threatens him with bodily harm. All this of course is only set up for Bad Decision Of The Night that begins a whole clusterfuck of Reluctant 35 Year Old Chosen one . . . now with Bonus Kid and a New Job. But hey he and his bestie get paid enough to keep the cable on, so not too shabby for one night's job.

One way to get tasks done in the day is to make yourself a Chekhov's List. Put all of the things you have to do on a list, and now that they've been revealed they'll need to be completed by the afternoon (third act) and when you've completed something you can Chekov that task from the list

When a character doesn’t realize they’ve been, like, shot or whatever and they hand brushes against their side and comes away wet with blood, and they’re just staring at it like wtf is this and then their knees just totally give out on them and they sink down, maybe gasping a little as the reality finally hits them. That’s good stuff.

I see that, and raise you a character who knows they’ve been shot, but waits until the rest of their crew is out of sight to put their hand against the slowly spreading stain of blood on their shirt, then trying to steady their breathing so they can follow without letting on how injured they are.

Okay but like the character who doesn’t realize they’ve been hurt trying to see if everyone else is okay only to slowly realize that everyone is looking at them with mounting horror. Then they touch their side to find it’s wet and oh no
