" i am being safe , you know ." the princess speaks to her parent as the sound of their footsteps echo against the stone below them . there was vampires amongst them , ones who claimed they were here to deal with those that were plaguing them , but that didn't mean any of them trusted them . " i am never going anywhere alone , not that avi would let me , of course . " her best friend had been her shadow for a long time , but he was ever more insistent especially she had decided to not pull her entry to the games in the chance that they would be able to happen . " i just hope our guests can resolve this quickly and we can get on with what we all truly came here for . it's my first year competing in the games and now i do not even know if it will happen . is it wrong of me to be disappointed ? i know we have suffered loss ... but i was excited . "
“I know,” Idalia assures her daughter as she moves to stand next to her, her hands reaching to take Aveline’s on her own and squeezing softly trying to convey her trust in her daughter. She is still concerned, she will always be, but all her children have reached adulthood and micromanaging them will not help, rather it is likely to drive them to do the sort of thing that would make her blood run cold. Freedom is necessary to grow, in the end, and she cannot contain any of her children, not when they are as free as the storms and stars that flow through their veins.
“I am grateful that you are trying to assuage my worries, sweetheart, I just won’t be able to stop worrying until we know more. Still, I am glad you are spending time with Lord Avi,” she says, eyes glittering with hidden mischief. She is rather fond of their friendship, after all, and she oh so enjoys seeing the two of them interact. Yet the thought of any subtle teasing leaves her mind when she hears Aveline’s words, and she smiles sadly.
“No, it’s not weird at all. We are complex creatures, and we can hold two conflicting emotions at the same time,” she assures her, giving her hand another squeeze. “Aerun, Laz and I have talked plenty of our experiences on our own games, so it makes sense you were looking forward to participating. You are allowed to feel disappointment, as long as it does not make you callous to the grief of others.”
players: eaerundil valerius & idalia cataegis valerius || @ofheliacal place: their assigned quarters, the castle, aurith time: a few hours after the letter went out
The only sound breaking through the silence that had blanketed their quarters was the sound of tapping. Standing over the desk nestled in the corner of the room, Idalia kept her gaze on the most recent map finished by their mapmakers. A light frown marred her features, and it had been that way ever since the royal couple had received word from the High Queen of Aurelion. The delicate balance between the courts is shifting with every second that passes, the entire map thrown into disarray by the appearance of a race that they had long believed to be extinct. Concern did not even begin to describe what she was feeling, the information on the letter far too weighty to make her anything but restless. Were they back home, Idalia would not be inside looking at a map and wondering what routes their naval fleet failed to chart. She would be in the port, coordinating a new expedition. Or she would be at the shore, releasing her concern on the waves lapping at her toes.
Neither option is available to the High Queen at the moment, so all she can do is frown and wonder. Neither a particularly proactive solution, and the thought alone rankled her. They have to be careful on how they move, though, so she cannot approach the vampires too rashly. Not when their status as allies remains so very tentative, and the truth of their story has only been confirmed by the Aurelion monarchs. There is no reason for High Queen Adelina to lie, yet they have to confirm the vampires’ story for themselves as well, if only to make absolutely sure of the facts. Max will have to meet with the vampire delegation, she thinks, but Idalia does not feel comfortable at the thought of her son meeting a tentative ally alone, even in a secure location.
“How did we miss an entire country?” She asks, finally breaking the silence with more than tapping. Sighing, she turns to face her husband and rests her hip against the desk. “And if we missed this, what else did we miss?”
✧˚ · . ─── Aerun often did not find it prosperous to focus on their stumbles nor mistakes; if he were to do that each and every time, one would likely find the valerian high king to be completely inept for the title. Still, where Aerun often lacked the sobering wisdom and worry for their courts, Idalia often met him in the middle. She'd always been a touch cynical, this tenebrous bit of her that remained a conspicuous weakness; it balanced Aerun's chronic mirth. A scavenger of the more illustrious and strange in life, the fae did not often tempt worry to his mind. " Oh maoinín , you've always been a wretched theorist . " Death would embrace them all one day, it was only a piece of the grand adventure; in spite of their longevity it would circle, a buzzard waiting in the rafters. This did not unsettle Aerun , but if he entertained the possibility of the vampire's intentions, he too would go mad with inspired theories that would paint them as cruel. He would do his best to remain amenable, which for one of his ebullience should not have been a difficult path to adhere to. Aerun approached where Idalia stewed, a warm hand squeezing the top of her shoulder, " I'm certain my great-great grandfather was once coined batty for swearing he'd stumbled into one on the high seas , " he still thought this a humorous memory despite the truth sitting alongside them within Aethara now. " They're crafty if we've assumed their extinction all this time . . . " it was the only worry Aerun would offer Idalia in this moment for he wanted to venture towards good reasoning for their obscurity that didn't end with trouble for his family and the rest of the fae. " . . . but there's little progress to be made starin' at that map , you know . " He offered a smile in hopes she'd busy herself elsewhere for the map would reveal nothing of truth if the vampires had warded themselves off within it for so long.
“Better safe than sorry, beloved,” Idalia insists, tone weary even as some tension leaves her as she is reminded of her husband’s presence. No fae is an island, but they are not a singular, they have not been since they had taken their vows. Where Idalia had grown more suspicious through her experiences in the court, Aerun had remained unchanged. It is his presence that keeps her anchored to place, rather than drifting against the merciless current. Her mirror and her counterbalance, they are both sides of a single coin and that widens their horizons not lessens them.
Sighing softly, she raises a hand to cover his, stepping back into the warmth of her chest and tilting her head to place an affectionate kiss to his chin. As always, there is the rough feeling of stubble, and she cannot help but smile against the tickle, eyes falling closed for a second as she takes in his warmth and centers herself outside her worries.
“I think you told me about him before,” she says as she opens her eyes, lips quirking into a smile despite herself. It’s always like this, with Aerun’s warm hands dragging her away from the undertow and into the sun-soaked sand, a steady presence that rarely wavers. Where Idalia is a storm made woman, Aerun tends to present like the crystalline waves lapping upon a calm shore. Most are unaware of the hidden depths beneath, taking his disposition at face value and forgetting that he is a king because of it, not despite it.
“But you are right, standing around and thinking the worst won’t do any good,” she admits, exhaling slowly as she begins considering their options. For now, the vampires had only had official contact with the Aurelion royals and their inner court, but they could not allow that to continue for long. Bridging the gap early would give them both more information and the opportunity to create a good rapport, both necessary if they were to deal with the rebels hiding within Aureth.

the young prince of vaeloria could hardly wrap his mind around the fact that vampires existed. a word that might existed in records, but if the remarks of his the scholars were to be believed that all of it had been wiped made him all the more wary. he's relieved answers came that shed some light on the dead bodies appearing, but he wasn't sure if that was any better. he supposed the aid of these unknown creatures was needed more now than ever, but the part of him that was mostly wary since the chaos began wondered if this was sort of a trap they weren't seeing yet. he'd done something rather unusual earlier that day, he had gone to the library and plucked out a few books in hopes that it would shed some light on the creatures. those were likely guarded but anything even in fables that might provide a clue or two. he had been browsing through the stack next to him in their family's assigned wing when footsteps directed his attention. "have you had a chance to speak to one of the vampires?"
Finding Maxon proves harder than Idalia had expected when she had started searching, but the reason why did not make itself known until she returns to the Valerius and finds him with a pile of books next to him. A fond smile settles on her face as she approached him, a hand falling on his shoulder to squeeze in greeting before dropping a quick kiss at his crown before continuing her way around his chair to take a seat in front of him. As she moves, she notices the titles of the books he has gathered and she nods to herself slowly in understanding. Maxon already going out of his way to try and find more information about the vampires makes it easier for her to ask him what she has been considering ever since they got the notice of the vampires arrival.
“I actually wanted to ask you to reach out to them,” she admits, almost reluctantly. She dislikes putting Maxon so close to their new visitors, but she trusts his skills. He is Vaelorian’s diplomat for a reason. “I believe Lord Lakith and you making first official contact would be a good opening move to any future negotiations.”

a longstanding friendship with the princess got you into plenty of places, and even with the guards at a heightened state – as they should be – it seemed avi was still on the shortlist to be allowed into the valerius family apartments without question. he was thankful, the sailor may go mad if he were to be barred from checking on aveline. there was no secret to how close the pair were, which is why when he walks inside the main common space and finds another on his path to aveline's room, the sailor pauses. " good afternoon, i promise the best behavior today. " boyish grin flashed, and he truly isn't certain if he's being honest or not, but avi is attempting to at least stay in a semi positive mood.
Safety measures have increased all around Aureth, and Idalia is thankful for the foresight the Aurelis possesses. Their current situation is rather difficult, and any sort of pressure could collapse the fragile peace. One of the disadvantages of that increase in security, however, is the inability to hold proper meetings in the Valerius family wing. Inviting just anyone could send the wrong message, especially when those she needs to talk to have been rather vocal on their dislike of the recent choices of the Aurelion’s Crown. She is lucky Lord Devon had agreed to meet for tea in one of the less popular gardens, otherwise things would have gotten rather complicated.
Idalia is heading towards such a meeting when a familiar face appears before her.
“Lord Avi,” she greets with a smile as she gestures towards Aveline’s door. “Just promise me you will make Aveline laugh once today, and I will look away if you do not keep your promise.”

" i think that's quite enough fearmongering over breakfast, do you not, lord devon ? " lake's voice is harder than most may ever hear from the spymaster, many used to him being in a hedonistic state of uncaring laziness. present circumstances have had the true fae in him surfacing a bit and truly lake has yet to decide if it's a good thing or not. all the same, lake is done with this table for breakfast and pushes up with a bit more drama and flare than perhaps he should. the lord begins to leave the large shared dining room, only slowing when a familiar face is found. " good morning, might i suggest not sitting with lord devon this lovely day ? lest you wish to hear how we are all nothing but dinner for monsters in the night and the aurelis family is eager to serve us up. " yes, lake's annoyance was far too obvious in this moment.
Idalia watched with mild fascination as her spymaster breaks character in his irritation, eyes drifting back to the Lord that had prompted such a reaction and noting him and his house. Absently, she makes a note to invite his household to tea to hear his grievances and give them a light warning to keep their worst instincts to themselves. They are the Aurelis’ guests after all, and sowing chaos through wild rumors is wildly impolite at best. Reprimanding Lord Devon of his behavior would have to wait, though, for she had been looking for her little spy master for a rather crucial task.
“Morning Lord Lakith,” she says, inclining her head in greeting as her lips tug into a light smile, even as her eyes narrow as the full extent of Lord Devon’s foolishness reaches her ears. Well, she would have to meet with him sooner rather than later then. Accusing the Aurelis of using them as sacrifices just wouldn’t do. Threatening the current peace while another threat lurked in the shadows was plan foolish.
“I will deal with him later,” she says after a beat. “But for now, may I have a moment of your time? I wanted to discuss the Aurelion Queen’s guests with you.”

laz was used to people being worried for him, but he was not used to actually being worried there was a danger larger than he lurking in the shadows. his protective instincts for his siblings was at an all time high – something he was sure was annoying – and his anger at the situation made him seem like that young and reckless fae that ran from his duty and home to sail the seas all those centuries ago. he wasn't an enjoyable creature to be near at present, but he also craved to be near those he loved. it settled him despite him being silent more than vocal. the letter at their door the day prior did nothing to improve his mood – if anything, he was far less bearable now. when someone walks into the room the prince had claimed to eat in silence he was already standing, intending to leave as he'd finished. " room is all yours, no scary bloodsuckers that i can found. " voice bitter, which was also a new one, and offered before he even looked up to see who was walking in.
The entirely Valerius household had their own tendencies for fits of passion, each of them reacting differently when their moods soured. It’s a trait her children had inherited from both her husband and her, and she cannot begrudge them whenever their bad moods rear their head. She is, however, very capable of being bemused whenever she encounters it and she had not expected it. Finding her eldest in a room by his lonesome is already odd enough, but the quickness in which he makes his way to leave before even meeting her eyes is the cherry on the cake. Idalia had suspected the news of what crept in the dark would unsettle her children, but she thinks that she might have failed to take into account how the news added to the weeks of being constantly on edge would weigh on their shoulders.
“What if I wanted to see you rather than find an empty room?” She asks playfully as she moves closer to her son and into his range of vision, sneaking her arm around his waist to give him a quick hug before dancing out of reach with a smile. “I have been feeling rather caged lately, and I was wondering if you would like to spar.”

helion found he walked far more these days, exploring places of their home he'd long forgotten existed. staying busy was difficult, but each night he returned to a wife who was doing far more than he. the addition of their new guests had come at more of a shock than he cared to admit, and the consort would be remiss to say he trusted their new guests. the decision made was still the best in his mind, but the sinking feeling that they had invited snakes into their home to root out another problem refused to let his stomach settle. guards stationed at every turn, they had no reason to trust these creatures and his protectiveness over his people and his children was at an all time high. as the sun sat high in the sky, the king found himself sitting on a bench that overlooked one of their most popular gardens, seeing how people acted and practicing his ability to block out their emotions. it took quite the toll at a time like this. when a shadow casts over him the fireborn does not startle, none would likely walk upon him with such boldness lest they were someone he already knew. " sneaking up on someone today is a questionable act. " he says lightly without turning.
For all that her concerns hold strong, Idalia knows not to let the public know. Citizens look to their leaders in times of strife, and if they were to see the Royal Family scrambling it is likely that morale would fall drastically. That can’t be allowed to happen, not when the arrival of Vampire Queen’s envoys is just the beginning of their troubles. As a whole, the three courts hold no more information about the rebels than the one that had been provided to them by the envoys, and that meant they were still painfully vulnerable. Chaos amongst the citizens would only make everything worse. The royals have to be seen, and they have to be seen untroubled. The gardens prove to be a good stage for such a display, lavish and beautiful in an entirely different way than Stormspire’s. Idalia moves through them with a relaxed posture, eyes watchful of her surroundings until they fall upon a familiar frame.
Approaching the King Consort of Aurelion, Idalia glances around in curiosity, wondering the reason for his presence in the gardens. She had imagined the royal couple would be rather busy for the next few days, determining how to best host the vampires while still monitoring them.
“My apologies, that was not my intention,” she offers sincerely as she walks around the bench so that they are now facing each other. “I simply meant to greet you, as I noticed your presence during my stroll.”
