So many within their brood, it was difficult for Esai to gain much fact of their lives and hierarchy but the Aurelis diplomat did his best with what scant knowledge was given. No matter the case he did not trust easily and would not be fooled to their attempted good graces now. " Then I must clarify that I'm not prone to sneaking , " Esai hadn't necessarily been hiding but the lord had certainly bargained on having more time before approaching the vampire princess. " Many questions , yes . But none such which you will answer in whole truths I imagine . " And Esai smiled at this for, if he were within their position, he would be of a similar lack of candidness. " Have the courts welcomed you in kind or have they exchanged their manners for wariness ? " no matter Esai's own worries, he was meant to represent the court in a favorable light.

for  the  most  part ,  the  fae  had  been  keeping  themselves  at  a  distance .  when  they  had  arrived  with  their  retinue ,  valeria  had  been  amongst  those  that  met  with  the  monarchy  of  the  courts .  it  had  been  a  tense  conversation  to  be  sure ,  but  for  now  they  were  allowed  to  within  the  castle's  walls  in  the  hopes  that  they  could  solve  both  their  problems .  to  snuff  out  the  rebels  that  conspired  against  their  rule  and  to  stop  any  fae  from  being  turned  into  vampires .  the  strength ,  speed ,  and  reflexes  of  a  vampire  with  the  affinities  of  the  fae ?  it  was  not  something  either  of  their  kind  wanted  to  contend  with  if  it  were  possible .  " no ,  i  surmise  that  you  were  waiting  to  approach ,  but  my  acknowledgement  of  your  presence  forced  you  to  reveal  yourself  faster  than  you  hoped . "  valeria  knows  it  to  be  true  and  it  brings  the  softest  of  a  smirk  to  her  lips  trying  to  not  seem  so  terrifying .  " we  are  willing  to  cooperate ,  but  as  i  am  sure  your  kind  is  not  willing  to  reveal  all  its  secrets ,  neither  are  we . "  the  princess  lazily  drops  her  fingers  to  the  bush  of  roses ,  delicate  fingers  lightly  brushing  over  leaves  and  petals .  " would  you  prefer  i  be  blunt ,  my  lord ? "  she  could  lie  and  say  they  were  welcoming ...  or  tell  the  truth.

✧˚ · . ─── His father had weaned him on many stories of the violent history which proceeded their current world; unharmonious, fae at each others throats over liminal power which revolved more around lands and influence than it did their inherent powers. House Thalryn was one absorbed under the helm of Aurelia, he had little question to his own current loyalties to the house, but Esai witnessed through his travels just how restive other houses and royals seemingly felt. The peace within their lands had been long instated, several lifetimes of fae stretching between then and now. He had to wonder if a house had lost their way from what was expected or if the threat was a figure more of superstition than what had ever been recorded in their history books. " I don't believe there are any who are bloodborn , " he mused this in solemn agreement, for it had been clear - despite his own current sense of denial - that no fae could be responsible for this. " ── but you are quick and you are strong . Do not make them feel mistaken for seeking your protection , Lord Daelan ; you know the true might of your sword and talents . " It had meant to be encouraging for he did not need those sworn to protect the inner family stumbling through any anxiousness too. " Do not let any get too close , even those we have once trusted immensely . " He held his hands up as though the script could turn on him where all was considered, " I cannot prove my own autonomy here but trust my word that I'm of my own sound mind through these troubles . " He had no idea the capabilities of such monster, if they could wear the face of those they loved or if they were just of monstrous strength entirely.

" no ,  thankfully  there  are  not  any  that  are  bloodborn ...  instead  there  are  those  that  require  blood  to  sustain  themselves .  how  did  we  forget  that  vampires  existed ?  how  did  even  our  ancestors  forget  of  their  existence  till  now ? "  it  did  make  him  feel  better  that  those  older  than  them  whom  they  were  supposed  to  trust  did  not  know  of  the  existence  of  the  dangerous  species  nor  that  there  was  apparently  a  whole  kingdom  not  too  far  from  their  own  lands .  before  now  they  were  did  not  know  what  they  were  dealing  with ,  but  the  evil  that  had  descended  upon  them  had  a  face  and  it  was  that  of  a  creature  with  sharp  teeth  and  strength  and  quickness  that  could  best  any  of  them  if  they  were  not  careful .  daelan  knew  they  were  not  entirely  defenseless  with  their  affinities ,  but  it  had  been  a  long  time  since  anyone  had  to  use  such  against  a  vampire .  " i will  not  allow  myself  to  be  cocky  or  complacent,   i  will  brush  back  up  on  the  basics  and  ensure  i  am  in  the  best  form  to  protect . "  if  anything  happened  to  alexia  because  of  their  guests ....  well  he  would  never  forgive  himself .  " be  cautious  around  them ,  i  would  recommend  a  guard  with  you  at  all  times  when  you  not  within  the  safety  of  your  apartments .  they  may  claim  they  are  here  for  the  rebels  and  broker  relations  with  us ,  but  we  never  know  what  a  possible  ulterior  motive  they  could  have . "  from  what  he  had  seen  conversations  with  their  guests  was  still  rather  tentative ,  but  he  knew  that  the  fae  staying  at  a  distance  could  not  last .  " i  am  surprised  they  came  to  us ,  but  perhaps  their  rebels  are  more  dangerous  than  they  realized . "

“My inclination would be to say that if you have two guards on you and are in a public spot, that happens to be crowded at the time, it would not be too dangerous to approach. But I would also run it by your father first,” she tells her with a sigh. At some point all of the Aurelis will encounter one of the vampires, but while she thinks it should be relatively safe for them to do as much, she is also not the one that should be in charge of those decisions. She might be the master of laws, but while she does have some influence over the royal guard, they do not answer directly to her. 

the  princess  knew  that  her  distance  to  their  vampire  guests  could  not  last  forever .  as  a  daughter  of  the  queen  and  king  consort  of  aurelion ,  asterin  was  a  representative  of  their  people ,  of  their  court .  sooner  or  later  she  would  be  in  close  proximity  to  a  vampire ,  perhaps  one  of  the  diplomats  that  their  queen  had  sent  and  eventually  that  would  lead  to  a  possible  conversation .  she  was  trying  to  convince  herself  they  were  just  people ,  like  them  with  their  differences ,  but  then  she  remembered  that  the  victims  of  their  rebels  had  not  a  bit  of  blood  inside  them .  they  had  fangs  that  were  meant  to  draw  their  life  essence  from  their  veins .  how  could  she  trust  that  they  had  control  of  their  nature ?  " i  do  not  wish  to  think  ill  of  them  before  we  even  truly  know  them ,  but  they  are  only  here  because  those  they  could  not  control  attacked  us .  i'm  certain  they  would  have  kept  themselves  hidden  for  far  long  if  they  had  a  choice . "  she  sighed  softly ,  it  was  her  inclination  to  think  the  best  in  people  unless  proven  otherwise  and  even  then  the  princess  knew  she  was  far  too  forgiving .  " oh  yes ,  i  do  not  intend  to  be  alone  with  one  and  i  know  mother  has  ensured  the  best  guards  are  at  our  sides  when  we  are  the  more  public  parts  of  the  castle . "  a  light  chuckle  manages  to  leave  her  chest  at  the  mention  of  her  father ,  " i  have  a  feeling  he  would  rather  that  i  do  not  approach  one  of  the  vampires  at  all ...  but  even  in  my  hesitation ,  i  am  curious  about  them .  i  heard  they  brought  humans  with  them .  i  had  wondered  how  they  would  sustain  themselves  in  our  lands ,  but  it  seems  they  were  willing  to  be  fed  from ... "  the  thought  sent  a  shiver  down  her  spine  at  the  notion  of  what  it  might  be  like  for  those  fangs  to  puncture  into  one's  skin .

“Lord Calyx,” she greets with a smile, lowering her hand to offer him a quick curtsy before straightening up and nodding at his concerns. “I am as well as I can be, yes. I assume the same case applies to you?” After all, as their country is the one hosting the Ancient Games, they must work quickly to avoid any further blame. “I have been working on new rotations, trying to shift the usual routes to maximize effectiveness while ensuring the guard is not overworked, but I will likely have to consult with Lord Evren on some details before the change goes into effect.”

they  were  all  lacking  in  sleep ,  overworking  themselves  to  be  sure  but  their  queen  had  not  chosen  them  as  her  inner  circle  if  she  did  not  trust  them .  it  had  already  been  a  lot  when  it  acme  to  the  hosting  and  planning  of  the  ancient  games  itself  and  working  to  keep  the  peace  of  so  many  of  their  kind  in  one  place  from  every  corner  of  aethara .  but  with  the  advent  of  vampires  in  their  midst ,  a  lot  they  could  not  immediately  trust  for  they  had  not  know  they  even  existed .  it  meant  he  had  been  spending  more  time  in  his  office  and  less  in  the  company  of  his  family  and  he  knew  they  were  not  entirely  pleased  with  such ,  but  all  he  did  was  in  the  effort  to  keep  them  safe .  " much  the  same ,  i  am  surely  not  getting  enough  sleep  lately ,  but  nothing  a  good  cup  of  coffee or tea can't  fix . "   he  nods  at  her  words ,  appreciative  of  the  effort  she  is  putting  in  as  well ,  " it  seems  you  have  it  at  hand .  relations  with  our  guests  is  slow ,  they  come  to  hunt  their  rebels  and  broker  diplomacy  with  us  but  they  do  not  seem  a  gregarious  lot ,  do  they ? "

fucking  vampires.  her  mind  reading  abilities  had  never  been  more  coveted  by  the  shadow-born  spymaster  than  it  was  now.  her  elder  brother  was  the  only  one  who  knew  how  much  she  had  resented  her  rare  affinity,  for  signa  it  had  always  been  the  root  of  all  of  her  problems  since  she  was  a  child.  signa,  like  most,  had  also  been  shocked  to  see  a  group  of  these  blood-sucking  creatures  approach  aureth,  and  with  them  human  companions  who  were  their  food  supply.  signa  couldn't  promise  to  not  attack  a  leech  if  they  came  anywhere  near  her  with  their  fangs.  she  had  began  doing  what  her  queen  asked,  spying  on  them,  which  was  proving  to  a  harder  task  given  how  care  the  vampires  were.  it  was  almost  as  if  they  knew  there  were  mind  reader  fae  (  yet  one  more  disadvantage  the  fae  had  against  them  ),  and  seemed  to  kept  their  mental  shields  intact.  she  dusts  off  her  dress,  some  of  the  lose  petals  on  her  path  way  had  fallen  on  the  fabric.  it  was  then  she  realized  another  had  joined  her,  turning  to  the  familiar  sight  of  the  fae.  "for  a  group  of  creatures  who  asked  for  our  aid,  they  aren't  behaving  very...friendly  or  socially.  who  do  you  make  of  them?"

the  solarborn  had  not  yet  staved  off  the  curiosity  of  youth ,  not  even  a  century  yet  on  this  earth  and  so  while  many  feared  their  new  vampire  guests ...  well  leora  was  entirely  intrigued  even  to  her  own  possible  detriment .  the  one  thing  that  kept  flitting  back  to  her  mind ,  she  had  heard  vampires  to  be  weak  to  light  without  something  that  helped  to  sustain  them  in  it .  what  of  the  light  she  could  create ?  the  same  light  she  had  inherited  from  her  father  and  so  had  her  brother .  despite  her  curiosity ,  she  did  not  think  there  would  be  a  vampire  that  would  be  a  willing  test  subject  for  her ...  but  maybe  if  they  caught  one  of  the  rebels .  well ,  a  girl  could  dream .  besides  if  one  dared  to  come  close  to  her ,  she  had  no  illusions  her  brother  nor  her  father  would  be  allow  such .  such  protective  men  that  it  amused  her  entirely  most  days  as  much  as  it  annoyed  her .  a  smile  plays  on  her  lips  at  the  sight  of  the  spymaster  and  leora  does  not  hesitate  to  step  closer  beside  her ,  " they  look  at  us  with  as  much  disdain  and  curiosity  as  we  do  at  them .  however  will  we  bridge  relations  between  us ? "  leora  purses  her  lips  in  thought ,  " i  am  curious  about  them ,  entirely  so .  and  i  wonder  if  they  have  far  more  ulterior  motives ,  why  else  make  themselves  known ?  could  they  not  hunt  for  their  rebels  without  doing  so ?   their  queen  wants  something ,  surely . "

the  younger  lord  walked  straight  into  his  husband's  temporary  office  in  the  aurelion  palace,  locating  calyx  with  a  wine  glass  in  hand.  his  husband  didn't  need  to  turn  to  see  who  it  was,  both  so  attuned  to  each  other's  presence  it  was  like  breathing.  azriel  would  take  time  to  finally  admit  he's  always  been  too  aware  of  the  man's  presence  even  when  he'd  stubbornly  denied  catching  feelings  for  the  high  lord.  "while  i'm  not  very  religious,"  he'd  say  at  all  truly,  "it  seems  our  goddess  wishes  to  punish  us  for  some  inexplicable  reason."  it  was  meant  more  of  a  light-hearted  statement  than  a  genuine  statement.  he  walks  over  to  his  other  half  in  two  strides,  placing  a  hand  on  the  other's  mid-back  and  applying  slight  pressure,  and  placing  a  kiss  on  the  other's  temple.  for  all  the  love  the  pair  shared,  it  would  be  a  stretch  to  assume  they  always  manage  to  agree  on  all  imperative  matters.  they  didn't,  but  they  were  fine  with  that.  more  importantly,  azriel  knows,  without  a  doubt,  that  an  agreeable,  and  docile  partner  was  not  what  calyx  wanted.  it  only  means  that  to  the  outside  world,  the  spouses  would  always  have  each  other's  back  and  show  a  united  front,  regardless  of  their  private  disagreements.  this  was  something  the  couple  agreed  on,  azriel  already  didn't  have  a  pleasant  track  record  with  mingling  with  others,  and  now  seeing  creatures  they  were  told  were  only  in  fables  not  only  exist  but  under  their  roof  unsettles  him  too.  "it's  asking  for  too  little.  however,  even  if  they  manage  to  solve  this  rebel  problem,  we  can't  send  them  on  their  merry  right  away.  they  don't  appear  keen  on  mingling  with  us  yet,  but  i  don't  doubt  they  came  here  solely  for  the  issue  of  their  psychotic  vampire  faction.  perhaps  their  leader  wants  something."

hearing  the  rich  timbre  of  his  husband's  voice  always  manages  to  loosen  his  tense  muscles ,  even  just  the  tiniest  bit .  a  chuckle  leaves  his  lips ,  though  it  is  only  half-hearted  in  amusement ,  " we  have  kept  our  for  so  long  as  she  desired  and  yet  now  she  sets  vampires  upon  us  unawares ? "  calyx  shakes  his  head  and  brings  the  glass  to  his  lips  to  take  another  sip  of  the  deep  red  liquid .  " perhaps  she  is  bored  despite  desiring  that  peace  and  decided  to  put  upon  us  a  species  that  would  not  think  twice  in  draining  us  dry . "  that  was  what  their  so-called  rebels  had  done  to  the  few  fae  that  had  been  found  after  being  missing  yet  not  every  noble  missing  had  turned  up  quite  yet .  as  the  days  continued  on ,  he  truly  began  to  wonder  if  it  were  truly  rebels  at  all ,  or  if  this  was  some  ruse  that  they  were  playing  on  the  fae .  azriel's  frank  and  blunt  nature  has  always  been  a  breath  of  fresh  air  to  the  high  lord ,  for  he  had  never  desired  a  spouse  to  be  entirely  subservient  to  him ...  no  his  other  half  needed  to  have  as  much  if  not  more  spirit  than  him  and  despite  their  disagreements ,  calyx  knew  that  azriel  strengthened  him  through  and  through  especially  when  he  was  being  too  bull-headed  for  his  own  good .  the  light  pressure  of  his  husband's  touch  settles  something  further  in  him  and  he  wonders  if  he  had  lost  track  of  time  again  and  azriel  had  came  to  make  him  realize  it .  " how  do  we  know  if  it's  truly  rebels  at  all ?  as  you  say  it  is  clear  that  there  is  more  underneath ,  they  need  not  have  made  themselves  known  to  us ,  yet  they  have . "  he  places  the  glass  of  half-drank  wine  on  the  window  sill  before  turning  to  azriel  and  daring  to  draw  him  close  with  his  own  hand  snaking  around  the  other's  waist .  " apologies  my  love ,  am  i  late  for  something ?  i  did  not  think  it  time for dinner  quite  yet . "

since  the  arrival  of  the  bloodsucking  creatures,  it  had  become  a  norm  for  all  the  families  to  dine  privately  with  their  own.  although  it  would  only  be  a  matter  of  time  before  their  parents  were  forced  to  bring  everyone  together  once  more,  if  for  nothing  else  than  to  attempt  to  ensure  both  fae  and  vampires  alike  could  work  with  one  another  to  put  an  end  to  chaos  the  rebels  have  been  causing.  logically,  astraea  realized  that  was  the  favorable  course  of  action  until  they've  dealt  with  the  immediate  threat,  but  something  told  it  would  not  be  as  simple  as  their  two  races  get  along.  from  what  she  had  gathered  in  her  time  of  observing  them,  they  weren't  not  to  keen  on  mingling  with  the  fae  despite  their  outward  amiability.  dare  the  elder  princess  remark  that  they  seemed  to  move  about  as  if  they  believed  they  were  better  than  the  fae.  although  that  was  a  problem  for  the  future.  the  aurelis  dinners  were  typically  very  lively,  and  astra  was  much  like  her  younger  sister,  preferring  to  watch  her  extroverted  siblings  squabble  or  jest.  since  the  arrival  of  their  guests,  and  more  fae  were  wiped  out,  there  had  been  a  damper  on  that  mood.  aster's  silence  was  noticeable,  by  the  raven-haired  sister,  the  startle  the  other  lets  out  only  fuels  her  concern.  "i  have  no  doubt  mother  put  the  fear  of  the  goddess  into  our  guards,  and  then  azrien  for  good  measure."  their  elder  brother  could  be  quite  the  frightening  figure  when  he  wished  to  be.  aster's  lack  of  response  to  her  true  question  was  also  expected,  neither  sister  quite  liked  to  admit  they  were  unsettled  or  any  insidious  emotions  they  were  battling.  "i  don't  blame  you,  it's  difficult  to  focus  on  much  else  when  psychotic  vampires  are  running  lose  and  then  a  group  of  royals  ones  reside  under  our  roof."  her  amber  gaze  remains  on  the  younger  princess,  "I  realize  you  won't  share  your  troubles  with  our  parents,  but  i'm  your  elder  sister."  astra  tries  not  to  think  about  how  there's  very  little  she  could  do  for  them  other  than  to  be  someone  they  can  lean  on.

living  in  a  state  of  fear  in  her  the  walls  of  a  home  she  knew  like  the  back  of  her  hand  and  beloved  with  all  her  heart  had  set  the  princess  entirely  off-kilter .  never  before  had  the  starborn  been  afraid  of  walking  the  halls ,  especially  late  at  night  when  many  had  long  since  gone  to  sleep  and  only  the  shadows  of  the  guards  as  company  in  those  nights  when  sleep  was  far  away .  in  those  nights  she  sought  solace  in  the  stars ,  mapping  the  constellations  with  her  eyes  till  her  eyes  finally  grew  heavy  and  she  was  released  into  the  land  of  dreams .  now  she  grew  anxious  at  the  thought  of  straying  too  far  from  the  apartments  of  the  royal  family .  she  had  never  much  minded  a  guard  a  few  paces  behind  her  and  ever  more  she  found  herself  gazing  behind  to  ensure  wherever  she  went  that  she  was  not  alone .  asterin  had  thought  her  family  to  be  lost  in  their  own  thoughts  and  feelings so  that  she  would  be  able  to  hide  how  much  quieter  she  had  become ,  but  it  seemed  that  never  could  pass  by  astra's  observant  nature .  " else  she'll  call  another  star  down  i'm  sure  and  they  will  find  themselves  on  the  receiving  end  of  it  if  they  do  slack  even  the  slightest . "  she  tried  to  joke,  trying  to  offer  some  lightness  in  her  tone  but  it  was  lacking  still .  offering  a  soft  sigh ,  her  hands  come  together  in  front  of  her  as  her  fingernails  fidget  against  her  skin .  " i  do  not  wish  to  be  a  burden  in  my  fear ... "  unconsciously  her  nails  pick  at  each  other ,  " but  i  am  terrified  to  leave  our  apartments  most  days ...  and  i  hate  being  terrified  in  our  home ... "  she  shakes  her  head  as  she  steps  closer  to  a  window  and  pulls  back  at  the  shade  offering  a  view  of  the  vast  gardens  beneath  their  rooms ,  " even  during  the  day  i  worry  because  it  seems  they  have  a  way  to  stave  off  the  light  of  day ,  of  the  bright  sun  that  shines  over  us .  how  can  we  ever  truly  be  safe ? "

vira  only  explores  the  castle  as  a  means  to  an  end.  boredom  begging  her  to  claw  at  the  walls  before  she  goes  mad.  "  horrible.  "  these  fae  were  weird,  nothing  like  the  beauty  that  was  their  home.  vira  favored  the  darkness  and  curvature  of  their  own  castle  rather  than  the  sparkling  brilliance  of  this  place.  everything  was  so  illuminated  she  wondered  if  her  own  talisman  would  cease  working.  "  i  don't  even  care  to  understand.  these  people  are  weird  and  i  can't  wait  until  this  is  nothing  but  a  memory  in  my  mind.  "  admits  the  younger  sister.  to  another  she  may  sound  like  a  total  bitch,  but  her  siblings  long  learned  her  moods  and  when  she  was  angry  at  them  versus  when  she  was  simply  annoyed  in  general.  "  every  fucking  corner  i  turn  has  another  set  of  eyes  and  more  whispers  that  are  basically  screaming  at  me.  "  a  groan,  she  relaxes  only  now  that  she's  with  val.  "  if  you  do  that,  can  you  please  be  sure  i  am  there  to  witness  it  ?  i  would  love  a  good  show.  "

" to  think  they  are  a  long-lived  species  like  ourselves ,  yet  different  in  so  many  ways . "  the  elder  muses  out  loud .  valeria  could  not  entirely  say  all  that  made  the  fae  feel  so  different  than  her  own  people ,  than  her  own  kind .  just  as  the  fae  were  being  given  a  crash  course  on  vampires ,  so  had  they  been  advised  as  well  with  a  history  that  she  knew  did  not  cover  it  all .  " they  seem  so  very  afraid  like  we  are  the  big  bad  monsters  that  they  would  be  told  about  as  little  children  in  bedtime  stories ...  yet  i  know  they  are  not  entirely  defenseless . "  their  kind  would  not  have  lasted  as  long  as  it  has  if  they  were  unable  to  protect  themselves .  though  she  wondered  how  they  had  let  their  kind  be  so  entirely  forgotten  to  the  point  their  own  were  going  missing  and/or  dying  at  the  hands  of  their  rebels .  " i'm  afraid  the  novelty  will  take  far  too  long  to  wear  off .  glare  back  dear  sister  and  i'm  sure  that  will  stop  their  stares  for  a  while . "  the  eldest  chuckles ,  " that  would  be  very  diplomatic  of  me .  perhaps  crixus  will  find  a  rebel  so  soon  and  then  i  can  have  my  fun .  it  is  has  been  a  long  time  since  i've  had  to  use  my  nails  to  disembowel  someone . "

it'd  been  a  long  day  of  being  yelled  at  for  answers,  stalking  vampires,  speaking  to  his  men,  and  patrolling  the  castle  alongside  those  tasked  with  it.  evren  had  ridden  out  to  the  gates  of  aureth,  had  met  with  his  captains  and  lieutenants,  and  had  sent  word  to  all  corners  of  the  city  with  instructions  directly  from  the  queen.  he  was  exhausted,  and  knew  he  needed  to  sleep  to  do  it  all  over  again  tomorrow.  even  still,  rest  was  a  foreign  concept  to  the  general,  which  is  how  he  finds  himself  sitting  in  his  common  area  with  a  glass  of  something  stronger  than  the  wines  aurelion  is  so  well  known  for.  his  doors  opening  doesn't  draw  concern  —  few  would  be  so  bold  —  which  is  why  the  general  only  slightly  turns  his  head.  "  come  to  join  me  ?  "

the  confines  of  his  office had  been  much  of  his  haunt  as  of  late .  the  four  walls  that  surrounded  him  familiar ...  yet  soon  they  had  become  confining .  closing  in  on  the  right  hand  even  as  he  tried  to  ignore  it  and  deal  with  the  myriad  of  decisions  and  paperwork  that  had  fallen  upon  him  since  the  vampires'  arrival .  usually  he  is  able  to  stave  off  such  feeling ,  but  today  it  wins  over .  the  high  lord  steps  out  of  his  office  and  his  feet  end  up  taking  him  to  the  general's  office  and  he  doesn't  announce  his  presence  instead  pushing  open  the  door .  his  eyes  land  on  his  brother  in  law ,  " as  long  as  you  are  sharing ,  of  course . "  he  moves  to  pulls  a  chair  close  enough  evren's  desk ,  " what  are  we  drinking ? "  he  hoped  it  was  something  strong ,  he  could  use  it .  at  least  until  he  could  be  with  his  husband  later  tonight .

evren  was  on  a  very  fine  edge  with  the  news  of  these  vampires.  ordered  to  have  his  guards  watching  their  guests,  as  well  as  stay  vigilant  to  these  rebels  they  spoke  of,  the  general  felt  there  was  simply  no  winning  this.  armed  to  the  teeth,  he  takes  to  patrolling  the  castle  as  well.  no  soldier  was  spared  in  this  duty,  he'd  be  no  general  if  he  didn't  join  in  on  it.  as  he  walks  and  finds  one  of  their  guests,  the  general  chuckles  a  bit.  "  i  was  not  attempting  to  sneak  up  on  you,  my  lady.  "  or  was  it  princess  ?  evren  was  quite  skilled  at  remembering  the  nobility  and  royalty  of  the  realm  the  inhabited,  but  it  was  more  than  reasonable  for  him  to  be  uncertain  with  those  creatures  of  the  night  –  that  could  stand  in  the  sun.  he  hoped  he  didn't  offend.  "  quite  a  few,  but  i'm  not  certain  how  many  will  receive  real  answers  versus  a  carefully  crafted  version.  "

the  princess  pretended  that  it  did  not  amuse  her  entirely  to  see  the  fae  jumping  at  their  shadows  thinking  that  even  it  might  hurt  them .  were  they  always  this  easily  spooked ?  while  she  knew  her  species  could  be  dangerous  the  fae  were  not  without  ways  to  protect  themselves .  the  magic  they  held  inside  themselves ,  how  it  expressed  itself  in  the  elements  of  all  kinds .  valeria  had  yet  to  see  sight  of  that  but  it  intrigued  her  nonetheless ,  perhaps  something  would  have  to  be  arranged .  she  stowed  the  thought  away  for  later ,  " as  you  say ,  my  lord . "  she  takes  a  few  steps ,  fingers  lightly  tracing  over  the  leaves  and  petals  of  precious  flowers  in  the  bush .  " it  is  understandable  that  you  have  such  reservations ,  for  how  could  you  know  if  i  speak  the  truth  or  if  i  omit  pertinent  details .  but  nonetheless ,  you  are  curious ,  everyone  is . "  but  not  many  would  get  over  the  intimidation  that  was  felt  at  their  presence .

nik  wasn't  a  creature  that  enjoyed  a  cage,  curiosity  overtaking  his  very  soul  and  often  making  him  wonder  how  he  wasn't  granted  the  ability  to  shift  into  a  cat.  his  mother  originated  the  tale,  nikolai  had  maintained  it.  empty  sack  in  hand,  the  scholar  ventures  to  the  markets  in  hopes  of  finding  some  beautiful  books  to  add  to  his  collection.  his  staff  will  hate  him  for  it,  nik's  trunks  are  already  weighed  down  so  much  they  take  longer  to  arrive  than  most.  his  sisters  jest  he  has  more  luggage  than  they  have  dresses  –  they  weren't  wrong.  spotting  the  queen  was  easy,  letting  her  have  her  space  something  nik  intended  to  try.  fate  had  other  plans,  though,  and  it  seemed  they  would  both  end  up  at  the  same  stall  and  she  would  ask  him  a  question  of  all  others  in  the  space.  his  eyes  drift  to  the  item  in  hand,  his  own  reaching  out  to  inspect  it  himself.  "  my queen. " greeting automatic. " the  aurelion  people  are  quite  skilled  in  some  trades,  though  none  are  ever  as  stunning  as  those  found  in  our  own  court.  "

the  markets  were  ever  more  busy  than  she  had  seen  before .  the  fae  that  crowded  the  area ,  many  of  the  common  people  especially  only  knowing  that  barest  of  details  about  the  chaos  in  the  castle .  would  they  truly  believe  that  vampires  walked  among  them  or  just  a  hoax  that  the  nobility  had  schemed  up ?  it  was  a  thought  only  for  a  moment  as  the  queen  focuses  on  her  surroundings  and  the  small  sense  of  normalcy  that  she  felt .  it  would  not  last  she  knew,  but  she  let  it  distract  her  for  now .  the  queen  tilts  her  head  at  the  lord ,  before  placing  the  necklace  gently  down  on  the  table  once  more .  " i  wonder ,  lord  nikolai ...  are  you  saying  such  because  you  truly  believe  or  because  you  think  that  is  what  i  want  to  hear ? "  her  tones  is  light  as  she  speaks  hoping  that  the  other  is  not  intimidated  by  her  words  but  rather  to  truly  have  a  conversation  with  her .  it  was  a  hard  thing  to  come  back ,  genuine  reactions  when  they  realized  the  crown  she  wore ,  figuratively  or  otherwise .  " would  you  pick  any  of  these  pieces  for  someone  you  admired  or  cared  for ? "

“I would say it is real, Your Highness,” she offers after a moment of observation. “But not of the grade nor purity that could be found in the upper markets of Emberfall.”

the  queen  has  many  jewels ,  precious  stones  in  necklaces ,  rings ,  and  earrings ,  some  of  which  were  gifted  from  her  mother  or  inherited  after  her  death .  saranya  does  well  to  take  care  of  them  especially  those  her  mother  had  once  worn ,  helping  her  feeling  close  at  times  to  the  woman  so  many  of  them  miss .  she  is  not  alone  in  that  when  it  comes  to  her  siblings  and  her  people  with  the  memory  of  the  queen's  death  barely  a  few  decades  passed .  the  queen  takes  notes  of  her  head  scholar  as  she  speaks  on  the  necklace  between  elegant  fingers .  " i  trust  your  discerning  eye ,  violante .  i  have  heard  that  some  markets  are  producing  very  realistic  fakes  that  people  do  not  realize  until  they  take  their  jewels  home  and  that  merchant  long  gone . "  while  it  would  not  hurt  the  crown's  coffers  in  such ,  she  can  only  imagine  someone  with  a  set  amount  of  coin  thinking  they  bought  something  beautiful  and  rare ,  only  to  have  it  be  a  disappointment  and  a  waste  of  their  hard-earned  coin .  " a  shame  really ,  i  hoped  for  quality  pieces  in  aureth  but  nothing  truly  compares  to  our  home's  jewels . "  she  tilts  her  head ,  " what  are  you  looking  for  in  the  markets  today ? "

“No, it’s not weird at all. We are complex creatures, and we can hold two conflicting emotions at the same time,” she assures her, giving her hand another squeeze. “Aerun, Laz and I have talked plenty of our experiences on our own games, so it makes sense you were looking forward to participating. You are allowed to feel disappointment, as long as it does not make you callous to the grief of others.”

the  princess  allows  her  mother  to  take  her  hands ,  they  are  soft  and  warm  and  throughout  her  life  those  hands  have  been  a  reassurance  to  her.  she  curls  her  own  fingers  with  her  mother's  and  squeezes  them  back  in  acknowledgement .  " i've  been  keeping  aware  of  my  surroundings ,  i  won't  let  myself  be  caught  unawares .  we  do  not  know  fully  what  our  new  guests  are  capable  of  and  i  do  not  want  to  be  the  test  case  for  it . "  she  sighs  softly  at  the  mention  of  avi ,  he  was  more  worried  than  usual  she  could  tell  in  their  arguments  and  tension .  " he's  my  best  friend  mother ,  it  would  be  strange  not  to  have  him  by  my  side ...  i  know  he's  worried  about  me  as  well ,  but  that  doesn't  mean  i  will  pull  my  name  from  being  a  competitor  as  he  wishes  i  would . " i  do  feel  for  those  most  affected  by  those  who  are  missing  and  those  who  have  been  lost .  it  is  clear  that  competitors  were  targeted  and  then  their  families . "  she  looks  down  at  their  conjoined  hands ,  her  fingers  aimlessly  and  gently  running  against  her  mother's .  " why  this  year ?  why  when  it's  my  first  time  is  this  happening ?  vampires  attacking  our  people,  trying  to  change  them  for  some  kind  of  rebellion  against  their  queen ?  why  must  we  suffer  for  it ?  will  i  ever  get  to  compete  i  wonder . "

it  could  be  misconstrued  as  spying,  but  in  truth,  sitara  was  avoiding.  she'd  crawled  into  her  shell,  she'd  resorted  to  skulking  around…  she'd  walked  into  corridors  that  creatures  of  the  night  may  be  stalking  in  as  if  she  were  invincible.  toying  with  her  necklace,  sitara  doesn't  move  when  she  hears  steps,  breath  stilling  as  she  attempts  to  figure  out  if  this  is  someone  she  knows  or  not.  the  nymerion  princess  sighs  softly,  deciding  not  to  be  accused  of  lurking.  "  this  hallway  is  taken.  "  it  wasn't  her  castle,  the  lack  of  tiara  on  her  head  didn't  even  mark  her  as  a  princess  today.  sitara  pushes  off  the  wall  and  turns  to  face  the  echoing  steps,  brow  cocked  when  she  finds  the  source.

the  spymaster  knew  the  halls  of  the  castle  in  aureth  like  the  back  of  her  hand .  she  had  grown  up  in  these  halls,  ran  through  them  and  knew  every  crook  and  cranny  and  secret  passage .  there  were  few  halls  that  were  empty  these  days ,  whether  it  be  the  increased  presence  of  guards  or  their  new  visitors ,  it  was  hard  to  find  a  place  of  respite .  morana  had  been  simply  making  her  way  back  to  her  office  to  view  the  latest  reports  from  her  spies ,  but  instead  she  nearly  runs  into  the  other  as  her  mind  had  obviously  been  elsewhere .  " is  it  now ? "  she  asks  as  she  pauses ,  " and  how  do  you  intend  to  claim  ownership  of  this  specific  hallway ? "

taria  found  herself  more  often  stationed  along  the  halls  near  where  the  nymerion  family  were  staying.  the  warrior  often  chose  the  night  shifts,  thankful  she  had  the  ability  to,  but  that  didn't  quite  mean  she  was  sleeping  much  during  the  day.  instead,  she  found  herself  near  the  sparring  grounds  or  the  archery  field.  it  kept  her  skills  sharp,  even  if  the  bow  and  arrow  wouldn't  be  the  most  effective  in  a  small  hall  or  with  enhanced  creatures  that  had  been  nothing  more  than  stories  prior  to  this  day.  when  her  ears  pick  up  steps,  the  terraborn  releases  the  arrow  and  then  turns  her  head  to  the  side.  "  i'm  not  late  for  something,  am  i  ?  "

saranya  had  ensured  that  the  royal  guard  were  placed  in  a  way  that  ensured  none  of  her  family  were  left  alone  nor  in  an  unsafe  situation .  while  these  so-called  vampire  rebels  had  only  targeted  families  of  the  nobility ,  the  queen  would  not  wait  till  one  of  her  own  was  harmed .  even  now  as  she  finds  her  way  towards  the  archery  field ,  several  guards  trail  her  but  when  she  sees  taria  she  lowers  her  head  to  tell  them  to  a  keep  a  small  bit  of  distance .  after  all ,  if  anything  occurred  then  she  was  certain  the  woman  would  react  in  a  way  to  keep  her  safe .  " be  at  ease ,  it  is  nowhere  near  time  for  your  shift . "  she  eyes  the  bow  and  arrow  for  a  moment ,  " how  much  are  you  sleeping ,  taria ?  i  know  we  ask  much  of  you  lately ,  but  i  do  not  wish  for  you  to  run  yourself  ragged  on  our  account . "
