I've honestly never in my life heard of this "it's okay to be racist" white people social contract. Being racist is NEVER okay and insinuating otherwise is pretty insane regardless of whether or not you listen to rap. Obviously it's racist to not consume art just because it's made by black people. Personally I don't listen to any kind of rap, white or black, because I find it's usually really queerphobic and needlessly violent. What white people have to understand is it's okay to not like the violence inherent to rap so long as you're not listening to white AND black rap rather than being the type of person that listens to Eminem and nothing else.
"the violence inherent to rap"
#i don't listen to rap either#but just bc i dont like the genre as a whole#like just the way the music sounds does not necessarily appeal to me#i listen to violent music just fine#i dislike rap purely because of the beat and composition of thw genre#but yeah “the violence inherent to rap”#pretentious ass
now what is "the way the music sounds." the single way that all rap sounds. can you explain what that is.
ok, i get your point that all rap doesn't sound the same. i was wrong to imply that. not sure what the correct music theory term for this would be but i just dont normally like rap beats. i personally do not like the vocals. the overall rap genre is not what i enjoy listening to. i didnt mean to imply that all rap is bad or unlistenable, i just personally don't like it.
Hey appleberry, I need you to reread what you wrote and realize how out of pocket you sound.
First, not liking rap beats in general insinuates that all rap beats sound the same, ignoring the incredibly talented music producers out there that make many different styles. Music sampling to create new songs ain't an easy feat.
Second, you stated that you personally don't like the vocals. Rappers primarily use they SPEAKING voice. And who are these rappers? They BLACK PEOPLE!!!!!!!! That's being racist af to say you don't like listening to Black people even speak in everyday life!!!!!
good god ok. so, first:
i already said that i am sorry for implying all rap beats sound the same. i know they do not, and i do not mean that people who create rap beats are untalented. i agree that music sampling is difficult. i should likely listen to more types of diverse music and rap but i have not yet. this is because i am busy and have a life, not because i hate black people
second: i do not hate the speaking voices of black people!!!! it is just a personal preference of mine that i dislike music with speaking in general!!! white or black!! if sabrina carpenter or taylor swift or whatever basic ass white girl released a track that was mostly spoken lyrics im sure i would also hate it. because i dislike music with spoken words.
i personally, and this is because music taste is SUBJECTIVE, do not enjoy the rap i have heard so far. i do not look down on those who make rap. i do not look down on those who listen to rap. i think it's great that people in the rap industry are creative and talented and doing what they love. its just not for me. however, if you have any suggestions for rappers or songs that you like, id love to give them a listen! i just might not like it as much as rap fans do. thanks.
I ain't forgot about ya, appleberry. Naming White Pop artists is not the best example to use. Rap cannot be separated from Blackness.
Enough examples out there of White musicians in Pop (even Country but we'll keep it to Pop) using Rap and Black culture long enough in their career to get well-known or to be seen as being rebellious, and then do a complete 180 to distance themselves from it heavily.
Whereas Black musicians rarely get to label their music as just Pop and be played on Top 40 Radio stations in a local city/metro area.
Rap has a very close relationship with R&B. R&B also can't be separated from Blackness. Did you know that R&B artists rarely get airtime on the Top 40 either? Do you listen to R&B artists since you've made your claim of being against Rap?
Rap, and by extension R&B, has always been seen as a lesser genre despite Rap being international, because of it's Black American origins, and is so quick to be criticized and othered, no matter what the subject matter is.
The most anticipated American music awards show, The Grammys, still barely wants to acknowledge that Rap exists by putting it in a category that more or less says, you got a category, now stop complaining about not getting Best New Artist/Album/Song of the Year already.
As of this year, ever since the Grammys began, only 12 Black solo/duo artists have won Album of the Year. Out of those 12, only 2 Rap artists won AOTY: Lauryn Hill in 1999 and Outkast in 2004. When Rap/Hip-hop became a category, the first winners, The Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff, weren't even acknowledged as they should have been. That's how little Rap is respected as a genre.
And again by extension, R&B, as it took Beyoncé, in her 20+ year career, a highly talented singer and dancer with a stage presence that rivals Michael Jackson, singlehandedly changed the day albums primarily drop from Tuesday to Friday with her self-titled album, was nominated for AOTY FIVE times: in 2010 when "Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)" was so huge everybody was dancing to the choreography, in 2015 in which "I woke up like this" was one of the top pop culture phrases at that time, in 2017 Lemonade was such a powerful album of songs of various genres, the stages of grief and pain that specifically Black women feel as being the most unprotected group in the US, everybody was in Formation and was so critically acclaimed that Adele who won AOTY instead acknowledged how hard Beyoncé worked on it (and Adele has always been vocal about her deep respect of past Black American R&B artists being her influences) and 2023 with "Break My Soul" influenced by House music along with sampling New Orleans Bounce artist Big Freeda (House and Bounce also have Black American roots), to win AOTY for Cowboy Carter this year (the fact that she had such a shocked look on her face when her name was called, I bet she wasn't expecting to win AGAIN)
And Beyoncé has rapped here and there in her music and collabs with other Rap artists too. Again, Rap and R&B have a very close relationship.
So still dismissing an entire genre that was created and heavily tied to Black American culture because of xyz, is still based in prejudice and enforces that Black art and its contributions to American culture are still inferior.
Jazz and the Blues were considered to be "The Devil's Music", Country and Rock got so whitewashed that listening and liking either of those genres in the Black community got you called out as not being "Black enough" depsite us creating it. Funk and Disco effectively died by the early 1980s because of racist (homophobic too) White men who listened to Rock (the irony of it all), to the point that for DECADES the Disco era was one of the butts of cultural jokes.
Go online, go to wikipedia/etc, read about Rap subgenres, listen to some R&B, you'll find a song or two or an artist out there

pacific rim central themes and narratives
reblog this and tag the first vine that comes to ur mind. mine is the one of the people yelling at cabbage
the establishment fears this.
not doomed by the narrative but saved by the narrative. yeah i know you'd rather die than keep suffering but the story doesn't actually care what you want. you have to keep going, even when it hurts. even being erased from existence won't stop you from being salvaged from the wreckage of un-being. get up. keep pushing. keep bleeding. keep living.
how much screen time do you have per day?
i never wanna think about that in my whole life

BTW today I met a person who's at least 50, uses they/it pronouns, and named themself Wyvern. It looks like if Santa was a biker and it plays D&D at the local library. Just a reminder that you can do whatever you want, forever.
