Happy 13th Anniversary to Planes!!
OC Shipping Chart!
I found the template on Tumblr, but I cannot remember for the life of me who created it. If anyone recognises it, please let me know so I can credit them properly!!
Anyway, here’s Gordon and Isobel! The information presented about their age is how old they were when they first met.
Happy Birthday to my OC Gordon!!
If he were alive today, he’d be 109.
Don’t tell him it’s his birthday. He calls them ‘a useless celebration to mark the fact that we are one year closer to our inevitable demise.’
just a handy little info chart on the spectrums of sexuality.
/Edit: I forgot to give credit this is a screenshot from a video made by a content creator called Lily Orchard you should check her channel out it's amazing

Sharkblr, I have a question.
Do you have a favourite shark? And if so, what is it?
I’ll go first: I don’t have one. I have five. They are: all subspecies of epaulette sharks, all subspecies of nurse sharks, whale sharks, zebra sharks and blacktip reef sharks. I have photos of all of these, with the exception of whale sharks, unfortunately.

“so this week my town made the news for—” nope
“there’s a restaurant two miles from my house called—” nope
“today I learned [celeb] went to my high school—” nope nope nope nope nope
these are all real posts I’ve seen on the internet that allowed me to identify a user’s hometown instantly. if it’s a small town, that’s doubly dangerous, because a bad actor could trace you just by a unique first name or selfie you once posted. in an age where doxxing and stalking are some of the worst I’ve ever seen it, you HAVE to think twice about what you’re posting online.
i once saw a 13-year old post an image they noted as being “a few miles from their house.” it had a theater in the shot with a unique enough name to be local. one google maps search, now everyone knew not only what city they lived in, but the possible neighborhoods in that radius too. and they had a HUGE following…who all knew this was a 13-year-old child.
so yeah. not to sound like a 90s internet safety PSA…but I’m gonna be that PSA for a minute.
if you’re posting an image, there is NO need to say that you live there. you could just be traveling. “saw this in Montana” is better than “saw this by my house!”
before you post about a venue, especially a restaurant or small store, check and see if it’s local—CRUCIALLY if it has only one or two locations. people might travel to arenas or convention centers, but they’re far less likely to be traveling to Bartleby’s Fish and Chips. if it’s an anecdote and you still live nearby, you can honestly just leave the name out entirely.
if you’re sharing a news story, it can just be a story you found and wanted to share. you don’t have to clarify “it happened in my town,” because even if you don’t mention your town name, an easily-googled news article will.
if you’re seeing a concert or meeting a celebrity on a tour that’s stopped locally, wait until they’ve hit a few more venues before you post about it, or at the very least wait until you get home. this is honestly a smart move for any event you attend: unless you’re marketing yourself, there’s no need to advertise your location in real time.
check your selfie backgrounds for anything identifying. this includes city names on venues, school names, street signs, and house numbers.
this stuff is flexible if you no longer live in your hometown, or if your city is particularly big, but there’s STILL no reason to tie yourself to your school, your workplace, or your street. you can call it paranoid, but as someone who’s seen my friends get literal death threats over fictional characters before, the last thing I want is someone willing to act on those threats finding out where they live.
anyway. PSA over. does a kickflip or whatever
So, I have a question.
Who is everyone’s favourite character, and why?
My personal favourite is Bulldog, for a couple of reasons:
I’m British myself, so there might be a bit of bias there.
The planes he was based on, the de Havilland DH 88 Comets, are simply iconic. Plus, they’re beautiful planes to look at.
He’s very accurate to the real DH 88s, which I admire.
I find him quite entertaining to watch, for reasons I can’t explain. I just enjoy watching this plane.
I’m curious to see if there’s one character who’s more popular among the fandom (and if so, why they’re so popular) or if it’s a mixed bag. I’m also curious if people in the fandom like the characters more for their design or personality, or if it’s something else or a combination of both.
OC Lore: Gordon
He is pictured here in civilian clothes. Who is Gordon?
He is the male protagonist of a story duology I am writing, called All’s Fair In Love and War, and Love, War and Peace (a working title). Over half of AFILAW is told through his eyes. It’s set in the 1940s, specifically during the Second World War, so there is period-typical racism.

Lore
Content Warning: mention of abuse, self-harm and suicidal ideation.
He was born in Doncaster, North Yorkshire, on the 8th August 1917, at just past 10AM. His mother, Theodosia, AKA Thea, Gresley (born in Senegal, 1887) was reportedly in labour for over 30 hours with him. His father, Rex Gresley (born in Italy, 1890) was a man of many professions: First World War pilot, restaurant owner, Ancient History teacher and Italian teacher. He was originally going to be named after Roman emperor Gordian, Rex’s idea, which Thea vetoed, and they settled on Gordon, but Rex got to choose his middle name: Augustus.
Gordon’s older brother Scott was born on the 7th May 1915. To those familiar with maritime history, this date is known as the day the liner Lusitania was sunk by U-20. Thea loves telling the story of how, a day after giving birth, Rex read in the newspaper about Lusitania’s sinking. This newspaper mentioned the exact time the liner slipped beneath the water, which just so happened to be the exact time Scott popped out.
Gordon’s life started to go downhill at the age of 16, when Thea and Rex were killed in an automobile accident. Scott became his brother’s legal guardian. Around this time, he met Elizabeth Grey, an older woman who he fell in love with. Elizabeth used her connections in high-up places to isolate Gordon from everyone else, where she verbally, and sometimes physically, abused him. He eventually escaped after nearly 2 years, but she later split his left hand open at the palm in a drunken rage. He didn’t go to the police as he was of the belief that nobody would believe him, on account of his race and Elizabeth’s untouchable status. To escape Elizabeth, he and Scott moved to London, before moving to the countryside when Elizabeth found them again.
During the Second World War, Gordon and Scott went down completely different paths. Scott was somehow recruited into MI5 to spy on German territories in Europe, particularly in France after the country fell. Gordon enlisted in the RAF, after being encouraged by Charles, his only friend. He turned out to be a natural when it came to flying, which didn’t surprise him. His dad had taught him everything there was to know about planes. He and Charles were put in the same squadron, stationed at Northolt, through pure chance. There, Gordon encountered John Ruxby, who took an immediate dislike to the former, as did everyone else bar Charles and Luke, a Church of England priest’s son from the Midlands.
On the 22nd July 1940, after having just shot down his fifth enemy aircraft and becoming the first ace in the squadron, Gordon discovered that the pilot of the plane he’d just shot down had made it out alive. He, Luke and Charles went to investigate, with the intention of taking the pilot as a prisoner of war. However, all three of them were stunned to see that the pilot was not only injured, but a woman. Unbeknownst to everyone, Charles convinced his father, who was very high up in the RAF, to let the injured pilot stay under the watchful eye of one of the squadron members. Gordon was chosen for the job, which he was a little relieved about. He was terrified that the injured pilot, whose name he’d discovered was Isobel, would be killed (or worse) by anyone else.
Over time, Gordon ran into a problem. A big one. He was starting to fall in love with Isobel. And fast. They started a secret relationship in February of 1941, which Scott only knew about after visiting the couple in December of that year.
In March 1942, John discovered what they were up to, and ordered Isobel to be sent to London for ‘interrogation’, which Gordon (correctly) interpreted as John-speak for ‘execution’. So, to protect Isobel’s life, he helped her escape. He had no idea why Isobel was actually in England: she was helping the British fight the Nazis from inside Germany, and was supposed to be meeting with a fellow agent to hand over information… only the agent got held up, and she remained stuck. This agent was Scott. Also she had broken her leg in five places, and the break took longer than expected to heal, having to be re-broken when one break healed wrong.
In October that year, Gordon wrote Isobel a letter, which was intercepted that November by John, who finally had an excuse to ruin Gordon’s life, unaware that Isobel was helping England. Gordon shut himself away, spending the rest of 1942, all of 1943 and the first half of 1944 hidden from the world. During this time, Gordon was shot in his shoulder, his ankle and the side of his abdomen by John, and was talked out of suicide three times by Scott. However, he still continued to self-harm, a bad habit he’d fallen into at 16, believing that nobody would care if he died.
He also discovered through Scott that the only reason he hadn’t been executed for treason was the fact that Isobel was working with the British, and Scott had the documents to prove it. However, there was another reason: Charles had used his father’s influence to keep his friend alive. This caused a massive falling-out between the two friends, as Gordon was known for despising when rich, powerful men used their influence to get things done their way. They didn’t speak until Charles reached out two weeks before the D-Day invasion, asking for his help. Gordon reluctantly agreed.
After taking a hit from enemy fire during the attack (which caused the scars on his face), Gordon managed to get his plane back to the airfield, before having his injuries tended to by his friend Philippa, John’s ex-wife (who left him earlier in the war, when she realised he’d been having an affair with a German woman) who had been transferred to his squadron by her own request.
After the war, Gordon adopted a golden retriever, who he named Sherlock, and a ball python that Scott had smuggled into the UK from his holiday with his girlfriend Ophelia, who he named Athena. He published his first book, a murder mystery, under the pen name Arthur Collins, which was loosely based on a murder case that he had solved a week prior to beginning his first draft. He also discovered the play An Inspector Calls, by J.B. Priestley, which he thoroughly enjoyed.
He and Isobel, who was now helping her mother run a small clothing business while recommencing her law degree, were reunited in 1946, shortly after Gordon went to see the aforementioned play. Isobel had gone to see AIC the same night, and she recognised Gordon and tried to get his attention, but he didn’t see her (too focussed on Sherlock). The next evening, Athena escaped, and was found by Isobel’s mother Ilse, who had moved to London with her daughter and absolutely loved snakes. Ilse, unaware that they had met before, re-introduced the two former lovers, who recommenced their relationship about a week later.
Isobel, after hearing about everything that happened to her lover during the war, was furious with John. Mainly because he was actually having an affair with a German woman, and freely giving her intelligence. So she and Gordon (who did not want to do this) teamed up with Scott, now an actor, Ophelia, now a French teacher and Philippa, a well-known journalist and co-host of her father’s radio show, to write an article on John. Their evidence was undeniable: dozens of letters to and from John’s lover, revealing many details about the war effort, specifically his squadron’s orders. Unfortunately, the case never went to trial, as John was found dead the week after the article came out. He was murdered in a bar fight gone wrong. Specifically, he went out like Julius Caesar: stabbed 20+ times on the Ides of March.
Gordon’s self-destructive tendencies never fully went away, but they did seem to quell after Isobel came back into his life. Isobel was completely aware of this, and loved him anyway. He was still his pessimistic, stoic, sarcastic self, but he had softened a little since he adopted Sherlock and Athena, and especially when Isobel came back. She encouraged him to go out and try new things, such as tagging along with Charles, Luke and their new friend Raj on their Friday nights out, or seeing more and more of Scott’s plays. Gordon found himself actually enjoying life for once, all thanks to Isobel. During this time, he learnt way too much about Charles’ private life, which was when he discovered that he did not like sex.
He and Isobel spent their lives together flitting between Germany and England, enjoying life together. They got married in 1947, and never had children of their own, instead choosing to adopt Gus, a boy who had been orphaned by the war, as well as two more snakes, bringing their total number of pets to five: Sherlock and four ball pythons (Athena, Lilith, Lucifer and Medusa).
My drawings of Bulldog! Plus a drawing of the plane he was based on (de Havilland DH 88 Comets) an OC of mine: one of the other DH 88 Comets, specifically G-ACSS Grosvenor House.
Also, here’s some of my Grosvenor House lore/HCs, and Bulldog HCs
Grosvenor House:
He’s nicknamed Grovey by everyone. Except Bulldog.
When he was in his racing days, winning would go to his metaphorical head, and the other Comets have to remind him that he is not invincible, nor can he win everything.
He is retired from racing, and spends his days chilling with his friends in the Shuttleworth Collection.
When it comes to teaching other planes, Grovey is the type to warn you not to touch the hot stove when you go to do it the first time. If you still touch the stove, he will act all ‘I told you so’ for five seconds, before dealing with the burn.
He is one of the more energetic of the Comets, and sometimes forgets that he is 90+ years old.
He got along well with the other Comets (before 3 of them crashed), but they did argue fiercely, like all siblings do.
His closest sibling is Bulldog, as he’s his only airworthy sibling, with their sister Black Magic being under repair.
He’s pansexual, but hasn’t been in a relationship for over 30 years.
He butts heads (I think that’s the correct spelling?) with Bulldog the most over the latter’s ‘every plane for himself’ attitude, preferring a more open-armed approach.
He’s a big fan of his brother’s radio show.
He loves reading sappy romance novels, but has noticed some go missing occasionally.
Is not afraid of expressing emotion. Tries to get Bulldog to do the same. Nothing works.
Cannot cook to save his life.
Very open with the press.
Bulldog:
He does not use nicknames. At all. He will refer to people by their legal first name no matter what.
He is the prototype for the Comets, built before the others, with a slightly faulty engine.
As the eldest Comet, he sees himself as their voice of reason/authority.
The other planes make puns on his name or nationality, i.e. “Oh, don’t worry about that one; his bark’s worse than his bite.” or “Shut up, you readcoat! I’m an American! I’m free of you, so stop telling me what to do!”
He hates the puns.
He’s been in the racing circuit longer than anyone else, and thus has seen a lot. No cheating scandal or mid-race shenanigans surprise him anymore.
He will drop the most unusual/concerning personal stories into casual conversation. His favourite story is how he snuck aboard two aircraft carriers (HMSs Ark Royal and Formidable) during World War Two, and got to watch the Bismarck being sunk aboard Ark Royal, and nobody noticed he was doing night recon missions onboard Formidable until AFTER THE WAR WAS OVER.
He has a radio show. No, I will not elaborate.
He is the ‘dad’ of the Wings Around the Globe group, constantly making sure everyone’s okay, not getting in to drunken shenanigans, being the designated driver etc.
His ‘every plane for himself’ attitude is him speaking from experience. I HC this as him having been metaphorically (or literally) stabbed in the back by a racer he had befriended over… something.
He’s asexual. Nobody but he knows if he’s ever been in a relationship.
He and Grosvenor House take a similar approach to teaching other planes. The only difference is Bulldog will not help with the burns if you responded rudely.
Nobody knows why he calls everyone ‘Matey’. Neither does he. He just started saying it one day and never stopped.
He pretends he only likes ‘sophisticated’ books (i.e. Dickens, Austen, Shelley, heck, he even once read Cicero for the bitchy insults), but he occasionally steals Grosvenor’s romance novels. Cries every time at the third-act breakup.
Keeps a stoic face in public. Lets everything out in private.
Does not discuss his personal life with the press.
He’s a pretty decent cook.
Yes, he and his siblings may not be very similar, but he does still love them.

My favourite photos I took at a recent trip to Old Warden Aerodrome in Bedfordshire.
Got to see some of my favourite planes there, especially G-ACSS Grosvenor House, my all-time favourite. The photos are of the following, in no particular order: several different marks of Supermarine Spitfires; a Hawker Hurricane; a Hawker Sea Hurricane; a Hispano Buchón (a Spanish-built BF-109, and this one had a Merlin engine like a Spitfire does); a Gloster Gladiator; and Grosvenor House, the sole airworthy de Havilland DH 88 Comet.
Some shark photos I have taken over the years!!
Photos 1, 5, 6, 9 & 10 (left to right, top to bottom) are of blacktip reef sharks.
Photos 2 & 11 are of nurse sharks.
Photo 3 is of a sandtiger shark.
Photo 4 is of an adult zebra shark.
Photo 7 is of a whitetip reef shark.
Photo 8 is of an epaulette shark.
Photo 12 is of a hammerhead shark. Not entirely sure which subspecies of hammerhead it is, though.
All of them were taken with my phone camera.
My favourite shark is a tie between the epaulette, nurse and zebra sharks.
