TODAY'S FACT IS

Did you know that the Lone Star Tick (Amblyomma americanum) is known for the white spot on the back of the female? These ticks are found in much of the eastern US and much of Mexico in wooded areas. They looooove to hitch a ride (and meals) on deer, especially white tailed deer. Each stage of life of the lone star tick feeds on a different host.

No eyes (some have eyespots on the scute), armored/spindly legs, and weird ass mouthparts. Not to mention while other blood feeding insects/arthropods bite, feed, and leave in the span of a day, ticks stay on and feed on you for 3-6 days. Though to find a host, they do a thing called questing. They climb to a tall plant or blade of grass, then extend their front legs in something of a Y pose. Once they smell a host, they leave and latch on and prepare to feed. Also they dig in with a mouth full of hooks and they secrete a special cement like substance that keeps them on for days.
