thoughts on the emmrich romance route (spoilers under the cut)

I've been thinking a lot about this over the last few days because I LIKED the romance a lot but was also really disappointed by it and I was trying to figure out why

long story short I think it just feels, like many character things in the game, too easy. you flirt a few times and then you're a couple. the payoff didn't feel like a payoff because it wasn't earned. it didn't overcome anything, really. I think the choice at the end of his personal quest is the one I agonised over the most in the game but because the pacing is so off it lost impact because it felt like emmrich and rook had been dating for like, a week

but the thing that annoyed me the most was how, in the non-lich route, they have an argument about their age gap before the tearstone island mission that is NEVER REFERRED TO AGAIN

like jfc your partner is trapped in the fade (for like a month apparently) and the last ever one-on-one interaction you had with them was your first ever fight, the AGONY of that, how was it not referenced??

all fluff no angst no friction. I didn't need anything brutal but I wanted an ARC, at least. maybe I've been spoiled as a blackwall romance devotee but please. a crumb of heartache I beg you

every time the wardens do something fucked up i like them even more. this isn't about any game specifically but all of them. i fucking love the knockoff night's watch, i love that they guzzle nasty ichorous darkspawn blood that you'll die from 1) now or 2) in thirty years and how they don't tell their recruits until it's too late and the damage is done. i love their secrets and corruption and their heroism in the face of primordial darkness. i love warden leaders and warden recruits trying their best and the infighting that inevitably happens when they disagree.

apropros of nothing, i just wanna say that even though the split of british/american voices in video games kinda sucks, it's really nice that in veilguard the british female voice is a northern accent. you just so rarely see that in any form of media, unless the character involved is poor or mean, so it's just really lovely that there's some positive representation of such a traditionally dismissed accent. i'm genuinely so pleasantly surprised that they got bryony corrigan to keep her accent rather than force her into received pronunciation.

just had like 3 scenes in a row where someone brought emmrich a death artefact to analyse. he's like the one guy in the friend group who owns a printer
