you know we don't give the sherlock holmes canon enough credit. sure, they're all-time great detective stories, but some of them also carry powerful messages that stand the test of time: women are just as smart as men, justice and the law are not synonymous, all mormons are evil, etc.
Also don’t forget: sending people to prison for non-violent crimes brands them a convict for life and makes them more likely to commit crimes in the future, so sometimes it’s better to let them escape.
ACD definitely allowed some of his more colonial attitudes to come into the work, but that doesn't take away how much of it actually pointed out the downfalls of late 19th century to early 20th century society. He's a white man of his time, there's no doubt about that, but he's certainly more humane than other writers of the time and you could even say he was progressive. People tend to focus on Charles Dickens being the writer of the 'people' but I truly believe ACD did a better job. So that's basically a long way of me agreeing with everything above.
But I think all of this also contributes to a queer reading of the story. Not just because Holmes and Watson are made for each other and they have some really cute interactions (although this point is valid and very important) but it's another way ACD is humanising the supposed 'criminals and deviants' and interrogating the prejudice beliefs of the time. He's not as up front about it as other matters (in The Blue Carbuncle, Holmes' speech about not making the guy a jailbird for life is pretty clear about its intentions) but it's why I think that the stories are supposed to be read with the same sort of analysis as, say, Dickens or Oscar Wilde. It could be the reason why ACD was frustrated about the reception the stories received, as the audiences wanted more new, grimy cases, rather than thinking about what he was actually wanting to talk about.
Detective stories, not about investigating crime but investigating life?
Six studies of my time with Vah Ruta and the beautiful fish siblings <3 Felt nice to draw Sidon again!

knowledge long forgotten
got really into reading item descriptions on this playthrough. anyway did you know the silent princess is one of the only raw materials with a cooking effect to not explicitly list that effect in its description
My favorite thing about fanfic authors is they can identify any gap in a canon timeline where characters are offscreen and exploit the ever living fuck out of it
They see a time skip of any length and go
I love this energy
I spent so long trying to remember the name of Telemachus's Detachment that I forgot why I wanted to post it in the end. Anyway, this may or may not be relevant to whatever joke was going around at the time,

In a local production of hadestown that i saw, when it came time for orpheus to sing epic III, the fates didnt give him his guitar back. You see, up on the platform by hades' office door, a shiny black guitar has been mounted on the wall throughout the whole play. It is this guitar that orpheus is given to play epic III on: hades' guitar. He once sang a song of love like orpheus, you know.
chills btw
If it's true what they say, I'll be on my way
sorry kaylin (game changer: noise some makes bonus BTS 🎬)
OKAY SO YOU WANNA KNOW WHATS SO CRAZY AND SO GOOD ABOUT FAREWELL MY TURNABOUT.
Edgeworth shows up again after a YEAR PLUS where everyone thought he genuinely just offed himself when he was really just soul searching and IMMEDIATELY is assisting with the case. Not even with ulterior motives either he has a plan and is waiting it out patiently, and for the most part he’s taking interruptions in stride and not getting too worked up over it like he used to. And more than that, he’s BANTERING with Phoenix. He’s freely making little jabs and quips at Phoenix and Wright pushes back in turn. It’s genuinely just for the love of the game because he MISSED BEING IN COURT WITH PHOENIX. The way i imagine them is that Edgeworth pre-disappearing act wasn’t used to being challenged by others due to how he was mentored by Von Karma (be perfect or don’t do it at all attitude) and he was so used to winning. Then comes along the fresh outta law school attorney who happens to be his former childhood friend who turns his life upside down by BEATING HIM IN HIS FIRST CASE. Do y’all realize how JARRING that would be? They develop this distinct back and forth, cat-mouse dynamic where the courtroom becomes THEIR domain that begets a push and pull in every direction. I think that Edgeworth realized he liked the challenge of butting heads with Wright and while he was gone he realized he missed it too and he NEEDED that in his life. So here he comes along and he’s settled into this similar yet different kind of man who’s still smug and snobby and a fair bit stuck up but who’s also kind of mischievous and crafty and knows where to dig into Phoenix’s personality to get a reaction out of him. He’s still pretty ruthless and cutthroat when it comes to prosecuting, has little regard for peoples’ feelings if he KNOWS he’s on the right track, but there’s a difference in how he speaks and holds himself.
And more importantly than anything else he’s ANNOYING and SMARMY and he knows he is and i’m pretty certain it’s all to get a rise outta Phoenix
