Ways in which ageists talk about the youth similar to how misogynists talk about women:
- it's impossible for an adult and a "minor" to just be friends, since they have nothing in common, so there's something else going on;
- all "minors" in a public space need to be accompanied by an adult responsible for their behavior and safety;
- mixed age spaces are no fun because adults can't make sex jokes or honestly express themselves without being called out;
- a "minor" talking to an adult is a liability because they're always one wrong move away from making a sexual abuse accusation;
- "minors" ruin all fandoms they join because they police adults;
- "minors" are inherently less capable of understanding complex topics and can't be reasoned with;
- adults should take full responsibility for how "minors" in their life dress, talk, or engage with media.
If you think it makes more sense than its misogynist counterpart, think again, because misogynists think their views are founded in objective biology too.
I feel like every time we did standardized testing in school, we all said “I’m pretty sure I bombed that, that was tough. That was awful.” and I’m sure some of us meant it but I’m pretty sure a not insignificant percentage of the student population felt fine about their performance but didn’t want anyone else to feel bad and did not want to sound like a stuck up dickhead.
In all my years of schooling, I can’t think of one person who left end of grade exams or the SATs and was like “Wow, that was so fucking easy.”
Okay, adding this to a reblog: this whole train of thought is baffling to me because in my environment the kids who would consistently pretend they bombed it and then turn out to have done well were hated more than anyone else. It was perceived as fake behavior or some sort of a manipulative bait-and-switch, and I can think of several cases of people becoming a bullying target over it. Even if they weren't actively bullied, everyone was definitely always talking behind their backs and emphasizing how annoying this behavior is. It genuinely took me a lot of time and emotional maturity to recognize that it can also be a behavior driven by crippling performance anxiety and not just a sign of a pathetic manipulator who must be put in their place.
Neutrally saying that hey I think/hope I did reasonably well, without bragging or implying the others are idiots if they found it hard, never gave me any pushback when I was at school, nor did it do so for any of my peers.
Ich weiß nicht, wie wär's denn mal mit nem richtigen Buch?
in general i think it's kind of worse than useless to always fall back on this assumption that people are being "tricked" into being mras or twerfs or white supremacists or usamerican jingoists etc. etc. when you can ask the question "how do they stand to materially benefit from this hate movement" and 9/10 times find a very easy answer

"do whatever you want as long as it's not hurting anyone" is unmatched. contrarian busybodies tried to say "well there's nuance..." for a while but there's really not

A standard porno with the bad acting and music and whatnot but partway through the action the camera pans to a millipede and hunting spider locked in a duel for survival, the sounds of sex fade out and the scene in the background blurs, epic battle music starts to play
