sooo funny how the sole existing spuffel episode consists mainly of spike having the worst night of his life while buffy and angel stare at him like they're trying to explode him with their minds
what if spike stayed in sunnydale after lover's walk for (realizes he likes fighting with buffy and it was fun to be on angel's side again, can't be bothered to go out and get his heart broken again, doesn't actually feel any better and finds a crypt to crash in, etc) whatever reason, but obviously if he's staying well then buffy and angel have to keep him in line. they have to keep checking up on him, cause what if he starts y'know being evil again? they can't trust him to stay on blood bags for no reason other that, what, his word? yeah, sure
angel asks buffy why she won't just stake him. buffy turns it right back around on him. neither of them can give a real answer
spike's annoying. he's insightful in a way they can't stand. he's... kind of fun. he interrupts not-dates and tags along on buffy's patrols and crashes angel's peaceful, boring nights to drag him out to either join buffy or just find some sort of entertainment. he adds some light, if not so much the pure kind as something neon, into their dark lives
he calls angel a pathetic git but won't leave him alone when he starts seeing ghosties or what have you. fun to freak him out, spike claims. he stays out of the way for the big confrontation, but the confused, yet still tentatively grateful smile buffy sends his way afterwards makes him feel... something. warm. eurgh
him and angel go out for drinks, a lot. mostly because it's the only way to get angel to loosen the hell up, and the only way they know how get along without a murder or a girl in-between them. it's awkward. really, really awkward. angel doesn't trust him, and spike thinks he's a worthless tosser. but going to willy's means they often find themselves with something to watch, or even occasionally join in on, and then it's not awkward at all. nothing less than muscle memory
when he catches wind of buffy's upcoming birthday, and angel's evident unawareness of what that spells, he doesn't do a single thing. doesn't think the watcher would dare. he's all fond of his slayer, from everything spike's heard. plus, what the hell does he care, it's the slayer! when he stalks on her a patrol she clearly did not want him to join, he steps in and, all casual-like of course, wonders if she's started her cruciamentum, hey? by the time she's on her way to question her watcher, he goes running to angel without a second thought to announce the news. not to act worried, because he isn't. he doesn't care a lick. but when angel goes marching off, he finds himself following from a distance, and enjoys watching the slayer outsmart every idiot around her
he's already helped save the world once, alright? won't be doing it again when it's what got him in this mess in the first place. so during the end of the world dramatics, he has an exciting night out with xander instead, and finds buffy's gang certainly the interesting type, all on their own
patrols with buffy are fun. at first, it's all fighting and taunting. tease the girl, get under her skin, get her to hit first. falls for it every time. but the longer it goes on, when he begins to help rather than simply getting in her way, when he listens to her daily adventures and provides his own commentary, when they slip into how easy it is to fight with each other even better than against, do they begin to spar rather than go for blood. he laughs at every good shot she makes, grins at every one he hits, and helps her become stronger all the while. she calls it bonding to her friends, her watcher
he calls it dancing. she won't accept the label unless he joins her at the bronze sometime. actually dances with her. he asks how her honey would feel about that, and she challenges him by saying angel's already agreed to be there. he shows up, and him and angel simply watch her from the sidelines. it isn't until she catches sight of them does spike feel like he's gotten into something he wasn't ready for. she slides up to angel, curling herself into his side, all the while grinning at spike. then, she fully turns her attention to angel, and so sweetly asks if she and spike can go dance, because she knows he doesn't like to. spike thinks he ought to be offended, and he probably would be, if her tone didn't sound more like she was simply letting angel know what would be happening rather than truly asking for permission. it's fun, it's damn well hot, it's everything spike had ever imagined with her. but he realizes that neither of them can stop looking back at angel, and spike doesn't even mean to do it in a gloating way. they just keep watching him, watching them. when they make it back to their seats, it only makes sense for buffy to climb angel like a soddin tree. but she keeps her fingers locked around the sleeve of spike's coat, and angel has both arms outstretched, with one practically wrapping around spike's shoulders. it's all strange, and not quite so familiar a feeling as he feared it would be
he flirts with faith and puts her down all in one. can't stand the chit, though he almost respects her style if the attitude was any real, but it's a grand time when both slayers look like they're only a moment away from staking him. course, buffy's ire is all he really cares about. jealous, jealous, jealous. he's one of her's, her's to keep alive or kill or know, and he finds the feeling to be mutual
spike steers clear of the vampire-willow debacle... mostly because he just hadn't realized that was going on. he whines to angel and buffy about missing out on all the fun. they're unsympathetic, unsurprisingly. buffy looks like she may throttle him for being so cavalier about her friend, which he certainly wouldn't mind, and angel looks so utterly done spike tries to take a mental snapshot if it. annoying them is just as well if he ends up missing the chaos like that
though him and angel don't often get along, especially now that he's gone all soul-having, again, spike likes him soulless even less. at least half of last year can attest to that change of mind in spike. so when he waltzes in and finds angel with... faith, of all people they know around sunnyhell. setting up... chains. and... tools. for buffy. he knows this cannot happen again. but he can play pretend. did it before, he'll do it again, to gather more information about what in the hell has happened. faith doesn't trust him, but he doesn't need her to. doesn't really care whether she does or not. it's angelus that's the problem. the relief he feels, when angel leads him to buffy and they both explain the plan, one set of green eyes begging him to be trustworthy and the other cautiously assessing, is almost sickening. it wasn't supposed to go this far. he wasn't ever meant to care. he can pretend, but he won't join in if he doesn't have to. he's there for the aftermath though, even if buffy won't tell him what actually happened. he's not sure he wants to know anyway
when buffy comes down with a bit of demon aspect, him and angel that are the only people she can stand to be around. angel explains some utter rot about reflections or some such, but spike simply tells her that, living with drusilla? not for the weak-minded. literally. angel rolls his eyes but corroborates. buffy weakly smiles at them, amused but just tired, and spike feels his undead heart uncomfortably clench. it's also the first time he finds out angel and faith properly snogged. which is. nothing. but it's not nothing to buffy, and he finds himself feeling off about it as well. he was never in love with angel, and definitely never like buffy or drusilla is, but he... cares. he cares about them both, however unwilling. and there's something going on with the three of them. so what angel has done feels like a betrayal, though he won't call himself as hurt as buffy clearly is. and neither of them need to know that. especially not right now
he's been around the scoobies for months now. he vaguely gets their deal. they're buffy's anchors to life, and they've got own reckless determination to keep her alive. it's all very lovely, so sweet his teeth threaten to rot. but it's when the red witch get captured and the whole group begins to crack does he realize just how important they are to buffy. and maybe it doesn't quite make sense to him, but he does his damnedest to help buffy get back her friend. even if, in the end, there wasn't much he could do. but buffy thanks him anyways, and surprisingly so does angel in his own, silent way. so he'll take it
by the time he decides to visit buffy's very important prom night, he finds her swaying with angel. this time spike's the one watching from the sidelines. up until buffy notices him from over angel's shoulder, and grins so bright he wonders if one of the disco lights hit him in a wrong way. she switches partners when the song is done, and then pushes him into angel's arms and tells them to dance too. it's silly. all of it, ridiculous. angel's clearly thinking the same thing. but buffy is happy, so how could they be anything but?
spike is the one to hunt down the faulty replacement slayer when angel gets poisoned. he, for the first time, properly orders buffy around, and tells her to stay with angel. they can't risk it. and he wouldn't ever do something so stupid normally, but if he somehow for some reason fails in retrieving faith, then they need buffy. they don't need him. buffy grits her teeth and tells him to bring her back, alive. or to come back to them if he finds himself in too much trouble. he ignores the second bit in favour of the fact they both want faith dead, he bloody well knows buffy does! but she's telling him directly how to go about this. so he'll try. accidents happen, of course. he roars in full vamp face fury when faith flies over the edge and gets away in a truck-bed. because not only did he go against buffy's direct command in going for the kill, he did it for nothing, and has no reward to bring home. he hesitates once he's made it to angel's, but she pulls him to sit at her side to watch over angel despite his failure. angel is delirious, calling for buffy when she's right there, and then for spike. buffy tells spike what she plans on doing, what she has to do to save angel, but spike tells her that's a completely idiotic idea. not when angel's in such a volatile state, and has the self-control of a ruddy fledgling. she will die. he instead suggests a controlled feeding: spike will drink, carefully, from buffy, and angel will take buffy's blood from spike. she's nervous, he knows. this is the final test of trust for him
and for that first moment, when her precious slayer blood fills his mouth and slips down his throat, he considers draining her. he considers the pleasure and the taste and sound of her powerful heartbeat withering away to nothing, running the hell out of town and never looking back. letting both these life-ruining fuckers die. but then she lets out this sweet little moan, and puts her hand on the back of his head, and he closes his eyes and pays closer attention to her pulse than the rush. he knows he needs a lot. he needs almost all of her. but he won't let himself kill her like angel won't be able to help. by the time he feels confident he's taken enough to save angel, her heartbeat is a fluttering thing, and she's knocked cold, resting heavy in his arms. he cleans off the two little pinpricks in her neck with what has become reverence. gently, he leans her away from him, and presses a kiss against her lips. then he wraps her back in his embrace and rouses angel enough to guide him to spike's now blood-warmed neck. it hurts. he squeezes buffy and tries not to squirm too badly under angel's savage teeth. though it's not his blood, his body still can't handle the strain. when he comes to, it's to library books and a lingering ache. apparently, he missed a whole episode in the hospital with buffy and the mayor and faith as well, or something. either way, he forces himself upright and snarls that he's back in the game
with grateful expressions on both buffy and angel's faces, they lead him back into giles' office to grab some weapons. in a moment just for the three them, hidden away from looming danger, buffy grabs spike's cheeks and kisses him soundly. she turns to angel next and does the same to him. with a desperate, gasping sound and eyes on angel, spike tells her not to do that if she doesn't mean it. in the face of spike's uncertainty, angel gives him one of his awful side-smirks and pulls spike in, copying buffy's kiss. not a goodbye kiss, buffy declares to spike's shell-shocked form. angel watches the both of them with happy crinkles at the corners of his eyes, his simple silence speaking for his agreement with buffy's words. just good luck! and stay alive. spike absently nods as he watches them finally start to grab for weapons. back to reality, it seems. stay alive. right. like he needed the order from those two, after that delightful tease
i know this has been said before, but it deserves repeating, the btvs ship wars could all be settled via polyamory or homosexuality. it's not that hard.
