Throne of Nightmares
"No one wants to read about normal, well-adjusted people. They want the misunderstood villain with the sassy pet dragon. Tell me you're not intrigued by the man who will torch the world for his true love rather than sacrifice himself for the greater good. The first creates glorious tension; the second makes you bawl until you're a snotty, distraught wreck, lying catatonically on your bed, staring at the ceiling while wondering when you became such a masochist..."
In the acknowledgements, Kerri Maniscalco lets her readers know this is a love letter to them... the romantasy girlies who can't get enough of dragons, fairies, and morally gray men. And let me tell you- home girl more than delivered. This book was delicious... it was an absolute delight to read (even if it was very mild on the smut scale).
I've read the other two books in this series, Throne of the Fallen and Throne of Secrets, but you don't need to have read them to enjoy this book. The series centers around seven princes, each named after a deadly sin. Fallen was about Envy, Secrets was about Gluttony, and Nightmares is about Sloth.
Now, if you're expecting Sloth to be a dad-bod prince in sweatpants, peeling himself out of a recliner after hours of Netflixing, you'll be disappointed (or pleased? Let's go with pleased). Sloth prefers books to people (honestly, same), and spending time in his library compared to anywhere else. He's immediately my favorite prince.
When the book starts, Prince Sloth is on a mission to steal the Book of Nightmares but gets double crossed by Xavier- his Master Librarian. Xavier uses a portal stone to nope out of the cave and most likely head to give The Book of Nightmares to the Goddess of Night- the one person who shouldn’t have it
Then we meet Lore Brimstone, a romance loving book girly who works at a library in the port town of Bellington. Lore is described as, "heart-shaped face, pert nose, long mocha-brown hair with strands of caramel, similar eye color, pale skin with a hint of warmth."
One night after book club, Lore goes to the traveling caravan, an old lady hands her a portal stone promising her adventure, and she is dragged to another land- along with Prince Sloth... "Pale hair, a shade of blond so light it was almost white hung messily across his forehead... Eyes the color of blue winter skies and just as cold...his cut cheekbones, that square jaw with a fine layer of ash-colored stubble..."
The two of them end up in Somnia, where they have to defeat the trials of the book. The trials are all set in different fictional worlds from books Lore has read (and in some cases, lusted after). They jump from book to book, using the portal stone which is actually a phoenix tear (like a portal stone, but way more powerful).
We find out assembling the tear, the Book of Nightmares (also known as the Liber Noctem) and a Dreamweaver (could Lore be one?) enact the trials of unbinding. Prince Sloth lets us know a Dreamweaver creates reality from fantasy using their mind. And if you can make it through the whole damn book without mentally singing Dreamweaver, you're a stronger person than me. Or you're obviously not a Gen X kid who watched Wayne's World a million times.
Anywho, the increasingly romantic tension duo of Peaches and Blondie (nicknames began to enter the chat on page 30) need to survive the trials in the Book of Nightmares, or it will overtake Lore, kill Sloth, which will destroy the seven circles and the other courts. Ultimately, we find out Lore is Nyantha- the goddess who ruled over slumber and granted dreams. She loved to weave daydreams with joy- which is why she was so popular among mortals. Meanwhile Sloth’s magic is fueling the Liber Noctem. Lore handles this by cutting at the Phoenix tattoo on his chest, and the book burns apart.
Of course, Peaches and Blondie are mates, they complete their mate bond, and they live happily ever after. The last few chapters are the spiciest, but the romantic tension builds beautifully leading up to the mate bonding. And the location of their mate bond? I needed dry panties. Every nerd girl will. Consider yourselves warned.
Excellent fantasy, sweet and spicy banter, and memorable characters. I'm already excited for book four.
