Narrative and acting choices on Nie Huaisang’s early relationship with Meng Yao.
If you go back and watch the season again, there are all sorts of details about Huaisang’s relation to Jin Guangyao and how he managed to outsmart him. And if you take into account they shot the introductory scenes, after the finale at Guanyin temple, it’s really interesting to take notice how the actors lay from the beginning the foundation of their upcoming confrontation.
First of all Huaisang is introduced with a canary he has just trapped after stalking it for three days. For a character that is portrayed as naive and inept, this is a telling sign of skill, patience and determination. It’s also apparent that he himself often exaggerates his naivety.
He later gives remarks that show a greater insight into the progression of the plot. Something that gives him away as an analytical observer.
For instance when Lan Xichen resolves the tension when the Wen appear first at Gusu, he makes a flattering remark to Meng Yao about the Twin Jades of Lan. At this time Meng Yao is looking openly smitten with Lan Xichen. Huaisang doesn’t remark casually, he observes Meng Yao’s behavior. He can tell who is eliciting such a response. And narratively speaking, this first meeting, this first attraction is what stays in his mind until the finale.
But the best detail, is how from the beginning Huaisang and Meng Yao play a little game of master and servant that is not always consistent- telling us that it is in fact a game. For young Huaisang, Meng Yao is someone he can practice authority with. And Meng Yao will make a show of his submission, not just to please him, but to reinforce his position as a young master.
This is not just a unique relation to them. It curiously stems from the very Nie court. It’s the obsession of hierarchies and values that births duplicity to Nie Huaisang, and he can practice this duplicity best with Meng Yao, who as an outsider is willing to engage in the theatricality of decorum, without really observing the values it stems from.
During the arrest of Xue Yang, despite Huaisang being in his presence, Meng Yao seeing an opportunity for further control, tries to coerce Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan into coming with them back to Qinghe. Huaisang never questions, never intervenes, never argues, or urges for an outcome. He is strangely passive before Meng Yao’s forceful show of authority.
The fact that someone can appear as one thing, but be another, and remain honest is something Nie Huaisang learns from his relationship with Meng Yao.
In this telling scene, Huaisang abandons the guise of the timid child to demand his playmate back. When his brother Mingjue calls him to order, it’s decorum that he demands from him. Huaisang’s eyes dart fleetingly at the two “strangers” behind him, before he assumes again the guise of submission. It’s as if too fast, too suddenly, too emotionally he forgot the lessons he learned from his games with Meng Yao.
Finally Huaisang disguises these lapses of appearing as something he is not, by exaggerating his weakness. He is never seen carrying a sword, in order to underline his lack of martial competence. This frighetened, useless child that needs protection and guidance is the very image of Huaisang in Jin Guangyao’s mind. Because he learned this image so well, he never considered that Huaisang could develop into someone else, into an intimate enemy.
After the reincarnation of Wei Wuxian he will often faint in the presence of others, or make a show of his emotions getting the better of him. He is however always in control, listening, observing, and guiding the scenes he is in towards the desired outcome. The most ruthless and entertaining show of creative helplessness is at Carp Tower in episode 40, where he successfully diverts Jin Guangyao’s attention, so that he can separate him from Qin Su and allow her to read the incriminating letter that will set his revenge in motion.
It’s very interesting that Huaisang knows helplessness excites and incites Jin Guangyao the most. It’s really the only thing he needs to manipulate him into all the wrong choices. And it’s also equally interesting that helplessness elicits both vicious and tender responses from Jin Guangyao, because he can’t stay vulnerable, it’s what he fears the most and it’s what motivates him to violence mostly. But to understand the rhythm of it all, the exchange between the two moods, Huaisang emerges as the most personal foe of the series.
Die temu ad die
Hmm. Accidentally looks like latin.
It accidentally is latin
Accidental latin is my new favourite thing.
Found this in the margins of a medieval manuscript.
This is a very charming illustration and I do approve of Accidental Latin, but unfortunately, that is not what this (Fake) Accidental Latin actually says. Google Translate seems to think "temu" is identical to "timor" (infinitive, "to fear"), which would then be conjugated in first-person singular as "timeo" ("I fear"). "Temu" is not a word in Latin. So that is a very weird leap on Google Translate's part to turn gibberish into... something vaguely etymologically similar sounding? Hmm.
Next, "die" does mean "day," though nominative singular is "dies," i.e. "dies irae." It could be conjugated "die" if it was in ablative or locative case, but "die ad die" would mean something more like "day to day." "Ad" is in a "to" direction and "ab" is from, i.e. "ab urbis," and ablative case is used to indicate the movement of a thing. In short, "by" is not really a way to translate "ad"; we might want "per" here? (Through, by means of, etc.)
Not to mention, it would be weird to put one "die" at the start and another at the end The verb also usually goes at the end in Latin sentences, just for that extra bit of fun. So yes, in short, this is not actually Latin, and Google Translate is very bad at Latin in particular. Nonetheless, still charming.
@theshitpostcalligrapher
Agree, @qqueenofhades, except on the matter of breaking “die ad die” apart. It’s a common structure in poetic and oratorical Latin to jam one phrase in the middle of another. I can’t think of an example exactly parallel to this construction, but I could believe a Roman poet would write it!
Ah, that is true. My Latin is of the reading-medieval-documents (particularly charters and/or chronicles) variety, where the sentence and usage structures are often more formulaic and there is less poetic license to move words around. There is obviously far less fixity for word order in Latin, since the conjugations explain how they grammatically relate to each other rather than placement in the sentence. (Coincidentally, this is why I used to say that the best feeling in the world was walking past a Latin classroom and not having to go inside it. Ahem.)
So yes: true that poetical Latin might be more at liberty to split the "die"-s up that far, though "timeo" (verb) is still more likely in most cases to go at the end, which would place them together anyway ("die ad die timeo," "day to day I fear" if translated in strict word order, which would make sense to an English speaker and sound more poetic anyway). Keep in mind, however, that my Latin is a) fairly rusty and b) mostly used for said formulaic legal document reading rather than freeform verse, so don't super-hard quote me on this.
I saw that ablative “die” and that final -u on “temu” and thought of the ablative supine (as in “mirabile dictu”) but as you observe, there isn’t a verb that “temu” could be, and then also, the ablative supine requires an adjective, as far as I know.
But perhaps “temu” is a hapax legomenon (in which case we would need the rest of the text to gloss it) or a scribal error for temeratu, from temero, “I defile or disgrace”. In that case, and in true Tumblr form, I might translate it as “daily I disgrace, in the manner of the day”, with some errors attributable to the scribe.
....oh my god. You might be a genius. Because what else does Tumblr do but daily disgrace [itself, oneself, and/or numerous others] in the manner of the day, and make numerous scribal errors.
how dare you say we error on the scribes
this is what happens when you buy your latin on temu
It's nice that loud noises don't stick to clothes like smells do. That would be really bad if they did.
this fetish stuff is getting out of hand what the fuck is word play

people will describe their incredibly nebulous sexuality to you that they’ve never been able to define and the whole time you’re thinking that sounds like bisexuality brother
If staff reformed the ban system to stop banning trans women and used the resulting good will to re-introduce pornography, this site would become a juggernaut. It would swallow Twitter whole.

I think one of the funniest abortion stances I've heard was from my parents neighbor. He's a like, hard-core libertarian viking larper guy who is very tall and very fat and very bald.
He believes a fetus is human with a soul, but also its "basically attacking the woman's body" so if she wants to get rid of it, that's "basically self-defense". He compared it to shooting a home invader. So he supports abortion not as healthcare, but as killing a baby in self-defense
Y'know I'm so glad someone reminded me of this. Because this was also discussed.
My stepmother did NOT like the way her Libertarian Viking Neighbor framed pregnancy as the fetus "attacking the woman". She incredulously told him this was extremely disrespectful to expectant mothers to portray pregnancy as so violent and negative.
Libertarian Viking Neighbor's response was that people consensually hurt each other all the time, and "there's like a whole community about that, with the acronym the one that starts with a B" And his reasoning was that if the mother was consenting to bring attacked by the baby, it in fact wasn't violent and negative because there was consent.
He brought up people consensually hurting each other, didn't go for one of the obvious answers like boxing or body mods or something, no he went STRAIGHT TO BDSM and he DIDN'T EVEN REMEMBER THE ACRONYM
This is a fairly common stance on abortion, minus the BDSM part. There are less weird ways to phrase it.
so many misguided metaphors around violence and desire. if the open maw of a panting beast fills you with the want to be devoured, that does not make you prey. while the rabbit trembles in fear, its deepest desire is to run. evolution demands it. in fact, the desire to be eaten does not make you any small animal at all.
it makes you a fruit.
If criminals don't get to have human rights, then the people in charge of deciding what a criminal is get to decide who is and is not human. Do you understand? Is this not blindingly obvious? Do you care?
Or do you assume you will always be "one of the good ones"?
I’m soooooo embarrassed. My lord told me “good night,” but I thought he was calling me a good knight, and, well, you could hear it clink against my codpiece.
I found this nifty little pinking tool at a junk shop the other day for $8.
While it looks very similar to the ones used on 18th century scalloped fabric trim it's definitely not as old as that, and is almost certainly meant for leather. Searching "T Dixon & sons" brings up a lot of leather tools, and I found one website that says the company started in 1843 and went out of business fairly recently. They didn't list any source, but the first result on google books is an 1892 ad in a saddlery trade journal that says "Estab. 1843" at the top. The ad also says "William Dixon & Son (Late of the Firm of T. Dixon & Sons)", so I think mine is from before 1892. In any case it certainly looks hand forged. I haven't looked very hard for more information yet.
I tried sharpening it with my narrowest metal file, and then with a folded bit of fine sandpaper, and it's better than it was but still pretty dull. It takes quite a few good whacks to get through even my thin glove leather scraps. I can't use my oilstone at all on such an odd shape and such tiny angles, alas, but there must be some way to sharpen it.

by "proship" in your tags, do you mean youre a proshipper? or are you clarifying that, yay, shipping good!!/gen
i personally do not support proshipping(aka darkshipping i think?), so thus im asking for clarification so i can step away from your blog if needbe
i am not sending hate, i am simply asking so i can see if i need to go my separate ways
id rather ask than assume, so uh, yeah
I am proship and I enjoy dark ships and writing about dark and taboo contents. that said, the definition of proship is “anti censorship and anti harassment”. you can be proship and still dislike some things in fiction. there are things in fiction that make me uncomfortable, but I believe people can enjoy and/or create it if they want. what others do is not my business, especially when they’re not harming anyone in real life, and I will never shame or harass someone over fiction, even if it’s personally not my thing.
proship =/= dark ships. I am proship because I believe censorship is bad and I condemn harassment, especially when it’s over fiction. but I also enjoy dark ships and I enjoy writing about dark and taboo topics.
