Imagine the events of MDZS from Wangji’s perspective. Do it!
You will cry.
Imagine that you carry the man you've loved since you were sixteen to safety, you nurse him back to health, though he tells you to "get lost" and defend him even though it means fighting your own family, which you get severely beaten for after being dragged from his side and still all you did was delay the enviable because you get news of his death. When you hear this you travel, although still injured, to look for his remains because you can't believe he's really gone but, instead of finding a body to mourn you find a child that your love had essentially adopted as his own, a member of his makeshift ragtag family that you could never be a part of, so you take him with you though he cries constantly from hunger and fever, and having him around will be a constant reminder of your love.
Before you make it back you encounter another reminder of your love and although you never liked alcohol you buy some, later in a haze induced by alcohol and grief you brand yourself with a hot iron over your heart as your love was once marred. By some miracle you're allowed to keep the child and though it feels like a stab to the heart when you look at him, its less painful to look after him and think of his future than it is to think of your past. You spend your days training the younger generation and being where the chaos is as you have since you were young.
If you pretend he is simply away, it’s almost as though nothing has changed. You’re used to longing for him.
While you are trying to put good back into the world if not for you than for others, a stranger falls at your feet. You do not think him much more than someone who protected your child, though he looks at you strangely. You leave him with a nod of gratitude. It’s out of character for you but you do not think you could bear it if you had lost your child as well. However, you encounter him again a few hours later.
He’s playing a familiar song, a song you wrote for your love, one that only the two of you had ever heard. You freeze where you are, suddenly incapable of moving. Your heart stops. And you know, even though it shouldn't be possible. You know its him.
