the thing about media literacy is that understanding why the author chose to specify that the curtains are blue is the same skill set as understanding that the way the author characterizes all black characters as angry or all chinese characters as meek and silent is racist. it is the same skill set as being able to identify when a news source is biased or when someone is feeding you propaganda. the ability to ask "why did this person choose to present this premise in this specific way?" is a critical skill in a world full of misinformation. why are the curtains blue? maybe it's a characterization detail. maybe it's extraneous worldbuilding. why is this character written as being right all the time? maybe you're intended to disagree with them. maybe it doesn't matter. maybe you should still ask why.

I'm coming to realize how vital it is to keep a running list of shit you did in the past few weeks so that you can participate in small talk. It's literally not anything to do with them being interesting at all it's just having Something to say to give people even the barest thing to hold on to. It's so you don't get into the "what have you been up to" "nothing much what about you" "yeah same" trap. Literally just say something.

What have you been up to? Um well it's getting warmer so I've been having to brush my cat every day.

Like no it's not that interesting of a thing to say. But now they can respond to it. They could say, man yeah it really is heating up, I've been trying to think of things to do inside more often. Or, oh you have a cat? What's their name?

Like. It's Something. All you need is Something. And if you're like me and your brain immediately goes blank upon entering small talk then keeping a list will help you remember things to say.

Touchstarved Occtis and Thimble.

Occtis because he craves touch, always has, being the hated and ignored runt of the Tachonis breed. The first time Thaisha gave him a hug he probably cried. And especially in death--he's just so cold, all the time. The problem, though, is that while he craves it, he can hardly stand it. His last living memory was cruelty; now every embrace feels like ghoulish hands holding him down, every touch reminds him of his brother's hands carving him open. He can't help but flinch away from the warmth he so desperately needs.

Thimble, on the other hand, has no problem with contact--it's just that she can't get it. She's barely the size of most people's hands. When's the last time she had a real hug? Sitting on someone's shoulder, or even being cupped in their palm, just isn't the same. Being cut off from Faerie is a loneliness she doesn't know how to explain.

But they have each other. Thimble is so small, her touch doesn't remind Occtis of anyone who's hurt him. Her hands don't register as dangerous. And for Thimble, Occtis knows exactly how gently/firmly to hold her without hurting her--he's an anatomy student, after all, and her second-oldest friend besides. His hands don't get sweaty or hot anymore, either, so that's another bonus. So they take care of each other, these unlikely friends, trying to navigate this mortal world as creatures made to be outside of it.
