what "no sugar added" should mean: the natural sugars of the other ingredients like fruit are the only source of sweetness in this product
what is actually means: we added a fuckton of artificial sweeteners
i see we are all angry about this
waiter!! waiter!! more interactions between prefall ovw agents pls!!
people don’t really get that in japanese culture, respecting your elders is an astronomically bigger deal. like, hanzo was literally pressured from birth to fit into this role for him, and the entire perspective is so drastically different than western standpoint allows that i don’t even know if it’s even POSSIBLE for non asian people to understand.
here’s the fact: hanzo has PTSD, he was psychologically scarred from what happened, and his stifled, fluctuating anger comes from the fact that in japanese culture, there just isn’t a way that you’re meant to express that. the weight of his emotions is something that he is not emotionally or psychologically equipped to handle in the context of his culture. until you understand this, no, you cannot judge him.
hanzo gets so much unnecessary shit from the fandom when he and genji were both complete victims of circumstance. there’s no other way to frame it. people just don’t get that psychological tangles and concepts of that nature are just, viewed so differently in japan. hanzo didn’t get to feel conflict, that’s not how it fucking works. he doesn’t get to yell at the elders and rebel like some happy fairy tale, when you have a position, you’re supposed to do it, and if you’re conflicted, you keep it inside. this is a culture where suicide is often favorable to allowing yourself to have a full on breakdown. there is little to no argument that hanzo absolutely contemplated (and may still be contemplating) killing himself. in some cases, SUICIDE IS SEEN AS MORE RESPONSIBLE.
hanzo literally couldn’t bear the weight of what he did and abandoned everything trying to redeem himself instead of just killing himself to stop the pain (this is, again, the much more common option). this is combined with the stigma against mental illness (especially those like depression, anxiety, and ptsd) and the pressure to just keep it underneath, and the fact that suicide is also a common response to something that you are deeply ashamed of (sound familiar??). YOU CANNOT UNDERSTAND THE GRAVITY OF HIS CHARACTER UNLESS YOU UNDERSTAND THE MOTHERFUCKING CULTURE. hanzo is so much more complex and tragic than the fandom has ever portrayed him to be and i’m so sick of his portrayal.
edit: this isn’t saying you can’t dislike the character, there’s plenty of reasons why, and hell, you don’t even need a reason to dislike certain characters. this is telling people that he’s exponentially more complex than the fandom gives him credit for (and very important to me as a mentally ill japanese person), and making or seeing him as a flat asshole/stereotype is really ignorant at best, fucking hurtful at worst.
bless this post.
I wanna add to this because the OP is so totally on point, and I want to clarify. This idea is not some vague notion that is not spoken of. It is named ‘giri’ and as quoted by Wikipedia to be ‘a Japanese value roughly corresponding to “duty”, “obligation”, or even “burden of obligation” in English. It is defined as “to serve one’s superiors with a self-sacrificing devotion” by Namiko Abe.’ Basically, ‘giri’ is somewhere as integral as ‘life’s purpose’ and as everyday as ‘responsibility’. It is a social value that is bestowed upon you and becomes you. If you choose to live outside of it, you lose your honor, and losing your honor means that you fall out of society. Entirely. You become a no one, bereft of dignity and a place. No family, no friends. Completely cast out. Giri’s opposite counterpart is ninjou, which is human nature. IT is the feeling that drives you to act against your giri, for example to love outside of your social hierarchy, to follow your dreams, to rebel. The push and pull of giri and ninjou is a (exceedingly) common source of drama in Japanese literature. Genji decided to shed his giri and dishonored himself and the family. To restore the honor to the family, it is Hanzo’s giri to kill him. But more importantly, by exercising his giri Hanzo is also restoring Genji’s honor by not letting him escape his own giri. This is important. Hanzo acts on the elder’s decision not only as to right a social imbalance that has been created by his brother, but also in an act to save him, be it within a really skewed social justification. Obviously, in the end, Hanzo’s ninjou gets the best of him, and he chooses a cast-out life than to live with his act, regardless of how honorable it was. Tl;dr: Unless you truly understand the social situation that the Shimadas come from, you can’t truly understand their personalities either.

In which Pharah has an assortment of feelings. Sorta kinda an indirect continuation of the candy comic?
A petty 20 goes a long way.
misspaperlilies said: What is this Sentinel/Guide business I keep hearing about?
Man, I wrote an entire short essay on The Sentinel’s place in fandom history, and then I went, “Hmm. She probably just wants to know what the trope refers to.” *g* So I’ll do the short (Edit: Not so short, I got carried away. LOL), tropey explanation, and then I’ll put the fandom history essay behind the cut for those who are interested.
The Sentinel was TV show that ran from 1996-1999. In it, Jim Ellison, an Army Ranger, gets stranded in the jungles of Peru, and his team is all killed. The isolation etc. causes genetic-but-previously-latent hyperactive senses to wake up. So he has super-hearing, super-sight, etc. He gets rescued and unconsciously suppressed the senses again and becomes a cop in Cascade, Washington. One day he’s on a long, isolated stake out, and the senses come roaring back and fuck him up because of the sensory overload.
Blair Sandburg is an anthropology student studying the concept of Sentinels, who he describes as “protectors of the tribe” and who have these hyperactive senses. He’s found people with one enhanced sense, but never all five. He hears about Jim, arranges to meet him, and convinces Jim to let Blair ride along on his police work so that Blair can study a real live Sentinel and Jim can get help controlling his senses from Blair.
The series is full of little details about the senses and how they work and the mythology around them. Here are the ones that usually come up in fic:
The zone out: This is when the Sentinel gets hyper focused on one sense and blocks out all other input, becoming almost catatonic. They have to be coaxed out of it with quiet talking and contrasting sensory input.
Spirit guides: In the show, Jim has several visions in the spirit world. While there, he has a spirit guide, a panther. When Blair ends up in the spirit world with Jim, his guide is a wolf. They also occasionally see their guides in the real world, usually trying to warn them of something or tell them something or lead them somewhere.
Territoriality: The Sentinel is described as having a primal instinct to protect his/her tribe. Jim’s interaction with another Sentinel that appeared on the show is…complicated, but fic usually just runs with the idea that Sentinels have a territory (the boundaries of which they determine) and that they’re extremely protective of it. They usually don’t like other Sentinels in their space, either.
Guides: Guides are fanon. People sometimes forget this, but literally the only place that guiding comes up in the show is when a guy in the spirit world tells Jim that “he guides you”, referring to Blair. However, it’s fanon that is 100% accepted by everyone in Sentinel fandom and the resulting trope. So. The Guide is assumed to also be genetically determined. They’re usually presented as someone who is good at calming the Sentinel, who has a strong connection to the spirit world, and who are generally a stabilizing influence on the Sentinel. Guides are also presented as the people who are most capable of getting Sentinels out of deep zone outs.
Bonding: This comes from a scene in the series where Blair is dead. Like, the medics call it. No heartbeat. Dead. Jim flips out, and goes over to Blair, and we cut to the spirit world, and stuff happens, and then the panther and the wolf run toward each other, jump up and merge in a giant flash of light. And Blair comes back to life. Fandom takes that merging of spirit guides and runs with it, usually giving them an awareness of each other’s location and empathy. Other effects of the bond vary depending on the author.
I think those are the major elements of the trope! Damn, that got longer than I meant it to. *g*
And if that wasn’t enough, and you’d like some fandom history, check out the additional info behind the cut:

watching an essek early scenes compilation and losing my mind over the mighty nein going "this really powerful guy that keeps giving our wizard spells and driving us around everywhere loves ominously mentioning how we're gonna have to pay him back soon... but hes niceys so im sure it'll be fine!" and then it literally was fine. he never asked for a single favour back. he almost started to but then they caught him doing treason and made him cry so it was forgiven. its like they're on a path of the most obvious foreshadowing in the world but jester keeps painting all the cobblestones bright pink. matt fighting for his life dropping increasingly unsubtle hints that this guy is not to be trusted but then they trust him anyway and it works out in their favour like this is the only character in the whole campaign they're not immediately plotting to kill, who starts off secretly plotting to kill them, but then without even consciously trying they change his mind through the power of friendship so it turns out they were right all along. who on earth is doing it like the mighty nein
its kinda hard to celebrate trans day of visibility because the visibility we're getting lately is like
Stop just asking "is it normal?" and start asking "is it harming anyone?" Lots of harmful things are normalized in this society and lots of things considered weird or rare are completely harmless. Whether something is considered normal or common shouldn't be the deciding factor in whether it's okay
i will do ANYTHING but work on my essay apparently
