one thing i love about eva stratt is she is wearing comfortable clothes. no crisp pantsuits for her she is running this whole operation in a cozy sweater and loose pants as she should be
Having an awareness of Grace's lack of consent and autonomy while you're reading the beginning of the Project Hail Mary book makes the medical horror of it all so much worse. (Content warning for the rest of this post with the things I've just mentioned btw)
He was put under, into this dangerous coma (that seems to have killed his 2 crewmates), and his body was violated by more than just injection of sedatives and coma-inducing drugs. He's got all this medical equipment on him and inside him: electrodes, an IV, NG tube, catheter, and what Grace calls a "butt tube".
In the movie he's dressed in a (white, I think) flightsuit as he's rolled towards the rocket. Since the Hail Mary was assembled in orbit, I'm not sure what the timeline would've been for when he was changed out of it and into the coma suit with the zipper hood (zipper over his face like a body bag...). But given the time between his initial drugging after he ran and the launch, I imagine that there already would have been some of this medical equipment in play, forced onto him by medical professionals who may or may not have known how willing he was. The robot arms handled everything once he was on the Hail Mary, but I still wonder about Yao and Ilyukhina, how much of a role they played in transferring Grace's unconscious body onto the Hail Mary... It's upsetting, the idea of other, unknowing people on the mission being made complicit in what book Grace directly calls his "murder".
In the book he wakes up naked and exposed, just absolutely covered in tubes and wires, which is. Rough. And obviously terrifyingly vulnerable. Movie Grace has the luxury of briefs underneath a translucent coma suit, but that presents a different terrifying thing when he eventually changes out of it and takes notice of all of the things attached to and inside of his body (honestly maybe that's why he just put the stripe hoodie on and didn't change into different bottoms 😬).
For book Grace (and if you notice the "Always muscles?" note on movie Grace's Who Am I? whiteboard), he's shocked at his musculature and focuses on it in a way that makes it feel like his body wasn't particularly toned beforehand, and these muscles feel Off.
His body's functions were quite literally arrested away from him. Even his muscles themselves, that give your average able person the power to move and control themselves and where they are in space. Control of his muscles is taken by the electrodes that buzz and puppet them to keep his body toned and functional. His whole body is carefully maintained to be functional for the mission. All against his will. And his body might just look/feel unrecognizable to him because of it.
In the book the robot arm shaves his face, which oddly feels worse to ne. When he's in his coma, he doesn't even get autonomy over basic optional grooming of himself, of his own appearance. Movie Grace's hair growing out is a different horror, that he has no control over his own grooming and appearance because he's, again, put in a coma and kept alive for the express purpose of the mission, becoming unrecognizable to himself in another way. There's a reason he cuts his hair short again as he gets his shit together, it's him claiming who is and the responsibility he has to Yao and Ilyukhina and the world now that he's on this mission. He wears his own flightsuit, yellow and embroidered with his name, unaware that he never chose this.
And of course, there's horror of lost memories. The things that make us ourselves, his memories and experiences were taken from him. Knowledge of who he was and that he never chose this was taken away. In the name of the mission, autonomy over his body and his personhood were taken away in such a literal sense. On top of the metaphorical sense of being made into an unwilling sacrifice. The purpose of his life was forcibly rewritten at someone else's hand. To save the world, and to die once his mind, body, and life's uses were expended.
in a world where grace eventually goes back to earth when erid is ready to make full contact. he's officially an eridian and earth dual citizen and is a physically very old man. it's also been a lot of earth years since he was here, especially due to time dilation. he comes off the eridian lander in a hoverchair accompanied by rocky in his little xenonite suit and is like wow, fresh air. rocky isn't it so beautiful here. rocky this is the ground i used to walk on. rocky this is the food i used to eat. rocky these are the people you helped me save. amaze amaze amaze.
and his speech has taken on eridian habits from years of only really communicating in eridian: he drops and raises octaves to show emotion, he's speaks melodically and with a rythmn that pings as music when you first hear it. his creaky old man voice is that of somebody who has spent their whole life singing, somebody who speaks for a living, because he's both of those things. his syntax is strange and his sentences are structured oddly. he looks around at everything with the delight and wonder of somebody who thought he'd never see any of this again.
he watches a sunset. he watches the rain fall. he watches a spider spin a web. he watches a waterfall. he smells and tastes and feels and sees and hears all of the things he left behind. he misses his home on erid. he's never been happier to be anywhere in his life. it's strange. rocky, it's strange. this isn't home, anymore. but it's still part of me. rocky, it's strange.
there's a statue of him in every major city he visits. he stands in front of the school he used to teach at, which was named after a dead president when he was here. now it's called ryland grace memorial middle school. it was named for him as the sun got brighter and the earth mourned his sacrifice yet again, but praised him for saving them. the lab he used to teach in, on the days he got to lead practical experiments, is named after rocky. rocky, it's for you! they love you, too! rocky, this sign is for you, it says your name!
eva stratt is an old woman, now. she was pardoned, in the end, in the wave of relief that followed the beatles' arrival with the taumeba. she's lived out the rest of her life quietly, ambition tamped down in the wake of it all. she's still sharp. harsh. she greets grace with an, "I told you so," but even after so many years, grace can see that she's glad to see him. glad he survived. glad he doesn't seem angry with her.
and it's not that grace has forgive her. he explains this to her over a cup of strong, black coffee. rocky explores the forest to give them time to speak. it's not that he forgives her. what she did, the decision she made for him, it wasn't right. it wasn't good. it saved the world, yes, but it wasn't fair. but. but, he says. i have a good life. i have friends. i have a classroom. i know now that you were wrong about me, back then. i am not a coward, and i am not selfish. i was afraid. i was terrified. i was lost. and now i am none of those things. i do not forgive you, but i am not angry with you, either. it is what it is. rocky and i, we saved two worlds. i can live with that, even if i don't forgive you. and eva stratt nods and understands. and they finish their coffee.
a handful of grace's students, the last class he taught before being wrapped up in the end of the world, they ask to see him. not all of them. some of them didn't make it through the disasters that came with the years long dimming. some of them never really believed that grace was the one who saved the world, falling into the rhetoric of those who say the whole thing was a hoax, and the weather patterns fixing themselves is just proof of it. but the ones who do come are surprised when grace remembers each of their names. remembers where they sat in his classroom, and the jokes they thought were funny and the jokes they thought were lame. they talk to him and he remembers throwing them beanbags in the end of the world and trying to make them laugh. when grace laughs at something rocky sings into the world, he's laughing through more than a few tears. he tells his students, the kids he saved the world for, that they've just been called leaky blobs by the other savior of the world.
when his students leave, grace sits in the setting sun, strong and warm, and looks out over the ocean. rocky, isn't it beautiful? rocky, don't you see? we made this possible, rocky. we saved them. we saved this. rocky, we did it.
and for maybe the first time since it all started, grace believes it. rocky, we did it. we did it. we saved them. we did it.
Love that Ryland Grace is the opposite of so many male protagonist "heroes" in media and yet he's still so incredibly brave, resilient, and strong. That flimsy little science teacher saves the day.
But he also,
Throws fits when things don't go his way. Not a "I'm a bad bitch" destroying everything-type fit, but tossing a trash can, breaking a screen-type fit.
Cries. A lot.
Pleads. He begs.
Doesn't answer the call to action.
Shows weakness. Being a coward and being fearful are two things he defines himself with.
Doesn't end up with the girl. In fact, that girl isn't even interested and he isn't, either.
Cherishes friendship over a romantic plot or something stereotypically brave like, "I'm going to save Rocky so I can save his world." No, he wants to save his friend, first and foremost.
Squeaks. He squeals. He screams, loudly and very high pitched. He whines. He complains. He physically struggles to open a jar. He's clumsy as hell. He makes some of the least graceful noises one can make.
Is not afraid to be the primitive species lowkey.
I love him and everything he stands for as a male protagonist. Men need to know that they can be just like Ryland Grace and still be just as much of a hero and a man.
Rocky fix

For years, sci-fi has asked, what if aliens were wetter than us. Project Hail Mary posits a new, daring question. What if we are the wet aliens
actually here are some additions to the project hail mary movie that were not in the book that i very much enjoyed:
graces earth amigurumi/stress ball, good luck quilt, and fox cardigan which is a slightly altered version of an actual vintage mary maxim knitting pattern! it gives grace this very strong visual tie to humanity by having him seen in/with items that are so distinctly human created, even in space or on erid. it also serves as a nice little love letter to fibre crafts at the same time to see them kept and treasured to the end of the film
rockys little finger knitting instruments for his xenonite! in the book they are just two liquids that get mixed together (part a and part b) but this little knitting-esque contraption is such a nice detail to add, and it ties in with graces handcrafted items as a similarity across the species that is recognisable, kind of like mirrors of each other!
i love a fox motif i love a fox motif i love a fox motif
the first meeting on ship where this room full of people are staring at grace and the hangar doors are open behind them, it gives this really eerie feeling of being stared at which is made worse by grace standing in front of the projector screen. i dont think the doors are open in the book.
grace opening the crew members belongings and Seeing them as people through the photos before sending them out to space. in the book he doesnt open them until later and there arent many details about what is in the photos so it feels more emotional when he sends them out (and he sends them out together and not one then the other!)
carl. he adds a lot to the earth sequences (especially a lot of fun!), and the “you know who you are” is just. yeah. hes a small introduction when a lot of characters from the book are lost in the movie, but hes impactful and i love him.
james ortiz kind of in general. im glad they went with puppetry as much as they could because it looks beautiful and i love puppetry. i know they chose to go with having rocky have a tts kind of setup to avoid having subtitles throughout most of the movie, but james adds a lot vocally to the character! kind of boggles my mind that he was doing like 45 min long improvs SO in character WHILST puppeteering when he wasnt even meant to be the voice of rocky and was just line reading for ryan. im glad they didnt have someone else do the voice acting. of course also his appearance as the news anchor at the very beginning and the tts option they go with being called “James” are also super nice
grace and rocky and the shared pain of picking a tts voice that works also MERYL STREEP
the costuming storytelling. obviously it wasnt really in the book because its much more of a visual medium but the colder and colder clothes progressively on earth, stratt closed off in her turtleneck and grace in the squeaky yellow raincoat thats so jarring when she tells him shes putting him in the hail mary against his will, the stupid science shirts, and the fibre arts pieces all add so much.
the inclusion of the projector/led screens and the beach motif
the video logs! its a good way to tackle graces internal monologue (kind of like how carl is in the early earth days), but it gives grace a feeling of being able to say goodbye to earth above being able to send the taumoeba. i wish in the book that grace had told earth that he was choosing to turn back and save rocky/erid even though he would starve shortly after, as it would have asserted to earth that he wasnt a coward
speaking of, the removal of the coward talk that both stratt and grace do when grace doesnt want to go. book stratt doesnt actually believe that grace is truly a coward otherwise she wouldnt have sent him. she knows that when he wakes up and doesnt know who he is, he will still be grace and he will do everything that is needed to help. the film was probably going to lose the nuance of this bit where they had to compress everything so im glad they removed it. i like the addition of grace running and being tackled instead
kind of along the same line, rocky not having shame about eating in front of grace!
entirely for visual purposes, having grace be able to see the petrova line whilst hes in it because its beautiful and i love beautiful shots in movies okay
also the big window on the hail mary. solves like two chapters worth of grace working out hes in space by dropping random objects and looks cool whilst doing it
armando. dont know why we needed an additional robot on board but i cant imagine not having him now.
grace putting up tethers so he can get around more easily in 0g, and taking them down and attaching them all together to get to rockys ship to rescue him after he turns around. the tethers are put up early and make him feel like hes way out of his depth because hes not trained enough in 0g. he takes them down because hes now comfortable in 0g (and in a way “at peace” with space and not being able to go back to earth/return to normal) and uses them to effectively seal his fate of dying on erid after saving rocky. i didnt necessarily see the need to add the tethers when i first saw them at the beginning of the film but the shots of all of them in the airlock joined together to make the line long enough was such a good shot and i like the metaphor of not holding onto what comforts him (the tethers being up in the hail mary, his life on earth teaching middle school) to chose something for himself (and others!!) even though he will die (him deciding to turn back to save rocky and erid, him NOT being able to decide to go on the hail mary to save earth). objectively this was probably also just to explain why grace had so many tethers but. it works.
